    1. Re: [MOBARRY] birthdates

    3. Well, I have a little different slant on this subject. For each relative, I do every census year, not just the 190, and add that info to what's on the death certificate to try to determine which is correct. I have a "cousin" who was born in 1869. She was 11 in 1880 but in 1900, she was still single and suddenly her age was only 25, not 31. She remained "younger" all her life including her tombstone and death certificate. Kids don't always know when their parents were born either. All you can do is gather all the info you can and make an educated guess. Myself I think the first year one of our relatives is listed in any census can be fairly accurate. Only think that is good as gold is a birth certificate. I did the 1900 census for one of the townships in Barry Co. and found mistakes as you have mentioned but I typed the census info as I found it rather than try to guess whether the age or birth year was wrong. 3. Patricia, The questions asked about persons' age, differed in census years, and sometimes people would mis understand the question, so the ages and in the case of the 1900 census year birth month and year, it is not at all unusual to find errors. I will tell you that my personal belief is that censuses are valuable for locations of families on a certain date, and beyond that can be in error. Now, as to the death certificates, in most cases, although not all those were filed in close proximity to the death date, so the year is probably correct. The only exceptions I have found, is where the age of the person may be a "guesstimate" by the person giving the information. Even those can be in error on information, but I would tend to accept the year of death over and above a lot of the information contained on them. Wilma -------Original Message------- From: P.A. 3. Donna, I do hope that your name is at the top of the list of MO Heroes. You have done so much for Barry County. My husband, Charles Lemons, is the one with ancestors in Barry County but I am doing the genealogy research on his family. His grandparents, William Henry and Martha Anderson Weeks moved from Tennessee to Barry County where all but one of their children were born, including Charles' mother, Lela Maude Weeks (m. Lemons). So many people have helped me over the years and I just wanted to volunteer to give back a little to the researchers of Barry County, MO in return for all that have been of assistance to me over the years Audrey Lemons Canton Georgia. 3. Good Evening: Concerning the featured photo - Blanche Carlin was born in 1888, Earl Frank Carlin was born Dec. 14, 1893 and Ruth Carlin was born Nov. 5, 1900 so that information might help to date the photo. Perhaps the child that Sherman is holding isn't Earl Franklin, because after some more study it was learned that Joseph's obit was published in 1893 and so he did died in 1893 as the family has recorded. The census and WW I draft records both date Earl's birth as 1893. I suggest that the child Sherman Carlin is holding is Blanche who was born Oct of 1888 and that this photo probably was taken in 1890 or so as Damien estimated. Donna Cooper

    3. Well, well. We have Dec.14, 1893 for Earl Carlin's birth date and also see news item below. This is really a problem. I wonder if there was a son born in between - and the dates are messed up for the children. ------------------------------------- Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Carlin are rejoicing over the arrival of a fine boy at their home on West Locus Street of this city. It is a photo of the Joseph K. Ellis Northcutt family The photo date is in question, since the family has recorded that Joseph died in Jan 18, 1893. Notice in the photo that William Sherman Carlin is holding his son, Earl Frank Carlin, born Dec. 14, 1893, who appears to be about 12 to 18 months old or so, which might suggest that the photo date is about 1895. Perhaps his date has been recorded wrong and he was born in 1890 - instead of 1893? Do any of you know? I didn't look in the newspapers to see if there was a death notice listed for Joseph or a birth notice for Earl listed. But if any of you have these dates, would you please share those with us? 3. List Readers: We have a lot of new things for the web site. I have been working on Monett these cold winter nights and have another 100 photos on the web for your viewing pleasure. I have started Folder 3 - only 19 more to go. [smile] A big thanks to Jay Trace for all these nice photos that add so much Barry County history to our files. Jay, we really appreciate all that you do. It means a lot to a lot of people. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/monett/monett.htm Our thanks to Darla Marbut who sent us a correction in Corinth. It was for Albert N. Stubblefield that I had listed as Arthur N. That correction has been made. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/corinth/corinth.htm Darla Marbut sent us some newspaper items - and in among those was a new burial for Whittington Cemetery that I added to the pages. It was for Bertha Jones, nee Rowland. Her grandfather was Isaac Keith. She has been adding a few to Munsey Cemetery pages, too, that she has been finding in the newspapers. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/whittington/whittington.htm On the Waldensian pages, Gerald Haddock and Darla Marbut added some new things about the Waldensian group. It is Arnaud history and a very informative bit of data which gives the understanding of how they ended up in our county. Thanks to both of you for all that you do. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/waldensian/arnaud.history.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/waldensian/waldensian.htm Our thanks to Damien Aragon for the photos that I added the Joseph Northcutt and family photo and also one of Joseph Northcutt to Photo Book 3. The family photo is our featured photo for this week. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/photos/photo-3/phs3.2.htm On the Helpers Page - I added new photos for Betty and Ralph Lamberson, Wilma Fields, Alice Allen and Judy Vietri. If your name is listed and you want your photo listed, please drop me a note. I don't know if that is all of the new ones or not, but here is the link where you can take a look. If you have helped you can send me a page in Word or Note Pad and tell us about the projects that you have worked on. You might mention what you enjoyed about the projects and be sure and explain the kind of projects that you tackled. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/helpers.htm Try and stay warm and thanks for all that you do. Those were for Crouch and Maloney. Thanks, Darla, for sending those. I wonder if it is possible for us to ever find out who all those unmarked graves belong to? http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/munsey/munsey.htm Bill Sanders updated Concord, Vineyard and Burton Cemeteries GPS listings, which I posted earlier today. Thanks so much, Bill, those numbers took me right into the spot. Don't you love Google Earth. It is so much fun to fly into the cemetery and see it from above. Betty Lamberson has given us some of the names in the Wheaton team photo that Alice Allen posted. Also Betty has helped us with a date. It was probably taken around 1923 -1924. I am so happy that we are finding out who some of these people were. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/schoolbook/schools/wheaton.team.htm And Don Warner sent us an interesting news letter for the Purdy High School - 1932. Thanks to both Don and Betty for these new items. And on the Barry County Helpers page, I keep thinking of things that I've forgotten that should be posted on there. If you want to send a photo of yourself I will post it on the page so that people can click on your name and see your photo. Also most of these will probably end up on the Missouri Coordinator's Hero page and he indicated that he'd like photos to go with the text. If you send me a story about what you've done - please send it in Word or Note Pad. I have a few of those now and will be going through them as soon as I can several. If I have forgotten something or somebody - don't be surprised - those senior moments come and go. I don't want to leave anyone out or to miss things you've done. 3. Donna, I finally was able to spend some time researching what you have on the Barry Co site about the old mills. The Hutchens brothers, Wilson, Isaac and John F. owned the McDowell mill and in 1889 they bought the Pioneer mill. Their sister, Mary Jane, married John Robert Allen in 1881 and they lived in Pioneer. J.R. and Mary Jane's son Walter is my husband's father. Walter worked in the mill for his uncles. My husband Forest was born in Pioneer in 1938. He remembers the mill and remembers the day it burned. He was 7 years old and was told not to touch the window to the store across the street because it was hot. Of course he touched it anyway and burned his hand.
