List Readers: I would like to explain what a copyright violation is. Taking photos or other things from the Barry County web site and posting them on "Find A Grave" or any other web site for that matter, without permission to do so, is a violation of copyright. That kind of violation is easy to trace and carries a huge fine. If I didn't give you permission to use them - then you have violated our copyright. You can use them for your own files and can take them for your own private use but that is different from posting them somewhere else. I really do feel bad for our volunteers - our helpers - who work so hard for us when you take their work and put your name on it. Even if you can pay a copyright fine, I would think that you would know that is the wrong kind of thing to do. To put it in a different light - It's about the same thing as shoplifting because the merchandise you took was not yours. If you see people who are doing this - please remind them of what the word copyright" means. Sometimes there are people who have to be reminded about honesty. Donna Cooper

List Readers: This week's featured photo on the Barry County web site was submitted by Darla Marbut. This is a wonderful old photo - one that will be treasured forever. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm In the photo are the following: Perry Elehu Williams (Born 1903), Nora Arizona Williams (Born 1899), Mary "Mollie" Elizabeth (Easley) Maloney (Born 1883), Hiram Edward Williams (Born 1905), Jessie Eveline Williams (Born 1896), and Mary Elizabeth (Russell) Easley (Born 1845) (Mrs. Edward Easley). The Williams children shown here were living with Edward and Mary Easley because their mother, Julia Easley Williams (Mrs. William Williams), had died. June 29, 1907, Saturday, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO - Edward Easley of near Eagle Rock was in this city (Cassville) Monday and said he would leave Thursday for Mountain View, Okla., where he goes to bring the remains of his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Williams, who died there about six months ago, home for burial in the Easley Cemetery near his home. Mr. Easley and wife have three of Mrs. Williams' children, and will probably raise them. John Easley, his brother accompanied him. And notice that Mary Easley is bare-footed. I've seen this photo before but never noticed that before. Also notice the neat looking bonnets that the girls are wearing. They sure were all very cute girls. Again, thanks, Darla for sharing this wonderful old photo with us and for telling us about it, too. Donna Cooper

Good Afternoon: It has been busy here at the computer for the past week. The first thing I want to mention is that I have been pretty busy correcting a mistake on the web site. I made a terrible mistake in giving credit to the MO Historical Society for the microfilm on a few of the newspaper pages - the credit line should read State Historical Society of MO. So if you have a credit line that reads incorrectly in your family files, please correct it. And - PLEASE accept my apologies for causing you extra work. It might not matter but those are two different places. The State Historical Society is in Columbia, MO and that is where you order the newspaper microfilm from in case you want to order some. I guess I am pretty darn dumb because I sure didn't know that the way I had it written was two different places. Anyway the State Historical Society was very nice about the mistake. On the helpers page I added a note and photo from Darla Marbut. Through the years, she has done a lot for the web site - and so I am not sure she has all of her contributions listed. But anyway, you will enjoy reading her note and seeing her photo, I think. If any of you who have helped - please accept my apologies and drop me a note. Some of those senior moments are bad, but I don't want to leave anyone who has helped out and for sure want every one to get due credit for their work. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/helpers.htm On the Corinth Cemetery page Karen Murrell sent me a note that let me know that we had Albert Henbest listed Alfred. So I corrected that. And Darla Marbut added a note on the Thomas name. Thanks to both of you for your help on those items. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/corinth/corinth.htm On New Salem Cemetery pages, I added a Brewer name. Darla Marbut found another Brewer infant listed in the newspapers that we added to the cemetery page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/newsalem/newsalem.htm And Darla Marbut noticed that there is a Cornell stone in Munsey Cemetery but it is for Walter Pendergraft's wife. Her maiden name was Cornell and that is what the stone reads. Also Darla noted that she had listed 1881 as the birth date but that the death certificate and stone both read 1884. I added the newspaper item and corrected the date. It is listed on the A to G page. Thanks, so much, Darla, we are very glad to get corrections like this one. I think that it makes our web site so much better to have accurate records! http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/munsey/munsey.htm At Mano Cemetery, Darla Marbut added a note for William Henry Holman. Also dates were added to his listing. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/mano/mano.htm A few new stone photos were added to Monett IOOF. This is a beautiful piece of work - another from Jay Trace that we will enjoy. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/cemetery/monett/monett.htm Thanks to all who helped with today's new items. Concerning the interviewing of seniors - I did some of that in the 1970's for the Northwest Arkansas Genealogical Society and it was a great project. Some of those interviews that we conducted are pure gold now. Also I recently read some that were done in Kentucky in a book about some of the people of Knox County that was written many, many years ago - again pure gold. I think that it would be great to take some of our school photos around to some of the nursing homes to some of the older folks and see if we can't find out who some of the the unidentified students are. Donna Cooper
Jane, Sorry for jumping in but you might find some good information at this site. I used it for my gerontology paper. http://www.storycorps.net/record-your-story I printed out some good questions. You don't have to do all it says about registering, you can get your questions and print them out without participating any farther. I read the reply to this one before I read this one original. I guess this idea only works if the pictures are from your family. I would like to capture memories of elderly people in senior living facilities about their lives in case their family might want them after they die. But then you have to know what or who to ask about in their life. I'm not sure how this would work. But here is an area that holds a real treasure for family members who might not have the time to sit down and record their family's information. I guess a person could take one of those books like for Fathers or Mothers that you give out on their respective days and use those questions to record a interview with the senior. Jane Foley NC
If you have a local JROTC group at a high school or a history class from the high school to make a project of recording some of these conversations with our older generation, it would help out the local historical societies. I also think it would be beneficial to the students. I would make history much more personal for the students. I only wish I had learned history in the context of genealogy when I was in school - it would have meant more to me at the time. Like Ruth mentioned these recordings could be whatever is comfortable for the person they are interviewing - notes, audio, video, etc. Our WW I veteran population is dwindling fast and this would be a great opportunity for a JROTC or scout group to record their stories. Hi, Kerri asked the program directors and they thought that it was a great idea as it helped with keeping there brains active then she got to do one on one with those that had alot more information to give. I just know what she told me. With all the old school pictures and unknown pictures and those in old work places and even thought maybe it was worth a shot. Ruth I didn't think to mention it and my daughter reminded me. I know something of the history of the Preddys coming to Barry County in the early 1900's. I don't know if any of the Preddy clan has done anything with genology or not. As I said earlier I would be willing to contribute if someone would be interested. Well, Barbara. looks like I should take my own advice and READ MY EMAILS. Barbara, Tell me more about your visiting seniors and the shoebox. I go into senior facilities every week to do a musical program. Your are right in that there are seniors who have no one to visit them. Also, there are seniors whose memory is good and some that aren't. I guess my question is how do you do this? I have thought about something similiar but didn't know how to put it together. You folks may already know about this, but the Barry Co. Museum is currectly doing oral histories of long-time residents age 80 +. The lady that does the bulk of the interviews does so only with a referral from someone, and sends the interviewee a letter to ask for permission. She then interviews them maybe an hour at a time, once a week I think, with specific themes in mind. After it's done, they transcribe the tape recorded interviews and her notes and edit out duplicate information and then they put it together into a story. They type it up and send a copy of it to the interviewee, so they can check for errors, and then they end up in a book. The next one should be out anytime, and one of the subjects is Raymond Phariss, who is 102, I think? I referred him to them, as well as another centurian from Purdy. Another fellow, Earl Atwell from Monett, is another fellow I referred them to, and last I heard he was proofreading 130+ pages of information. Also, I know that Fran Bolton, Penny Bailey, and the folks working on the Barry County School project have gone to some nursing homes, but more often they go to Senior Centers. They can post a notice letting them know they are coming, so the members can bring information, pictures, etc. of their own to add to what they have. They can also help with indentifying school kids in those pictures. jay --- Ruth Kent <eruth@swbell.net> wrote: > I live in Kansas City and recently, there have been > articles in the local papers about people who > interview retired military or persons who served in > the wars. I live in Kansas City and recently, there have been articles in the local papers about people who interview retired military or persons who served in the wars. As I understand it, they make an appointment, then have a general discussion just to get comfortable with the person they are going to interview -- get them talking about themselves -- and then they either videotape the discussion or tape record it, trying to do so in an atmosphere wbere everyone is comfortable and the person is not really aware of the taping. kind of a general chat type situation. what a great idea..I'm sure the elderly people enjoyed this experience a lot, and at the same time it was a help to you. You'd have to have the permission of the facility you are visiting though. Hello, I know I thought the same thing. She said she put them all in a shoebox and went to different ones. She said it is sad because so many still have great memories but get little to no visits and some have no family and the staff welcomed her and even pointed out the ones that had good memories and those they knew wouldn't want to be bothered. All my family are from AR. MO. ILL. and I was born and raised in CA. it was something when told to me I sure would have tried it. I am the next to the oldest in my family that is alive and I don't know any of them in the old family pictures. I have never saw any of my mom or dads family so I guess it is a good thing there wasn't any old pictures to leave in my family. I have found a few family members that have shared a few old pictures. Hello, Donna I met someone years back that got alot of old family pictures when her family died. Since she knew her grandparents had lived in a town a few miles away she took allot of her group pictures around to nurseings homes in the town where her grandparent had lived and start asking the older people there and many that could give names to people that were taken at work places and schools and even some of her old family pictures. She said it is say as many of the people there do not get many visits some not at all but there are many that have great memories she said she still has some that have no names but found that she got alot of information from those that had information and they really enjoyed telling her about the "good old days. I don't don't if anyone there is able to do this in Barry Co. but thought I would put it out there to see if it could help anyone with alot of these old school pictures and other ones. Nancy King age 62, b ky was enumerated with John Shaw family on 1870 census. Does anyone know anything about this lady? It does not state , however I believe she to be either mother or sister of John Shaw. He also being from Kentucky.. recently there was an article on here about a King family whose wife was Nancy. could this have been just a neighbor visiting at census time? Any information at all would be appreciated. Also I have a genealogy question.. In 1920 I have an ancestor who obtained a passport to go to England-Wales where his parents were from. I know you used to be able to take children with you without a passport, but could the whole family travel on husband's passport alone? They were not listed on the 1920 census, and I cannot find an application for wife..and that is when he planned to travel. What do you all think?
