In several states, including Missouri, certified copies require a certificate of kinship and also a reason for request. Donna Cooper -------Original Message------- From: mobarry@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, January 28, 2008 10:02:26 PM To: mobarry@rootsweb.com Subject: [MOBARRY] Has anyone else had to do this? Hello Everyone, I need to ask. I sent for my g-grandmothers death cert. and I tried the Barry county courthouse and also the state courthouse of MO. and the county court house only had a paper saying I had to contact the secretary of state to get the death cert., the county or state courthouses didn't have the information. When I wrote to the secretary of state to get it she said I had to send documents to show she was my g-grandmother. I had to send death or birth from me to her. Has anyone ever had to do this? My g-grandmother died in 1942 but I have never had to do this at any other time in any other state on any I have got those before or after 1942 and yes even in Barry Co.,. When I asked he why she said she didn't know why her death cert. was there or why that request was in the file. Can anyone help please. I did get the death cert. but I have wondered why I had to do this and if someone else ever had to do this. Also she kept the copies I sent for her file. I had a quick look but don't find them. Did you know that most larger libraries will give you access from home to Heritage Quest with a library card or pin number? You can usually check it out online at your library website. Heritage Quest has all the census, Rev. War records, books, etc. Phyllis ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane Foley" <mjfent@bellsouth.net> To: <mobarry@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 28, 2008 7:12 PM Subject: Re: [MOBARRY] Sarah Amanda Keeling Obit - February 22, 1938 > Is there anyone that could look up John D. Is there anyone that could look up John D. Keeling in 1850 & 1860 in TN? He could be in Wayne Co., Perry Co., Davidson Co., or Lewis County. I do not have access to those census. I would say it's all because of the Privacy Act. Some states are more stringent about this. I needed to send for my daughters birth cert. and had to have my ID notarized to prove I was authorized to receive it. Yes, it was a typo. I meant 1884. That is the year that was in the obit. But I checked my records and I have born April 13, 1964. Isn't that interesting? Here is the 1900 census. List Readers: Posting obit submissions to the list mailing is not a good idea. Please refrain from doing this in the future. Not only do they require some work to prepare them for a web program but there are also other issues, too. Other than making my job a little easier - another issue is that sometimes obits posted on the list are in violation of the copyright laws. Posting information about living people without their permission is not a good idea. If your obits have living people then we must abstract them - remove living people. If they are abstracted then we should list that they are abstracted. Another issue is that the newspaper who printed the obit has the copyright - not the relatives who gave the information - unless it is a paid obit - and so that is another reason why we abstract them. If they are over 70 years old then we can post any of them without a problem. So please send me your obits in Word or Note Pad so that I can be sure that we are following rules and so that I can post them on the web without a lot of unnecessary work. If you need more information our submission guidelines are posted on the web site. Please help me to follow the rules. Donna Cooper

You can fill out a form from the National Archives (# of form escapes me at the moment) and request a search from Archives. I'm not sure how expensive that is at this time because I know the archives was planning on going up in price quite a bit. Also, ancestry.com has an index if I remember correctly (it has been a while since I used my ancestry account). If you can find the pension file # it makes things easier when requesting the file from the archives. Laurel > I have enjoyed all the info about the Civil War Pensions as well.
