I am connected to the Anthony Hall family. He was my GGG Grandmother's 3rd husband and several of his children married other relatives of mine. I don't know if these Hall's are connected to him or not. Would that Clarence Sanders, brother to Beulah Sanders who married Preddy, be the Clarence who lived about 8 miles west of Butterfield? They were neighbors and church friends of ours all through my childhood, in fact I am still close friends with his grandaughters. Yes, those Sanders Girls were beautiful! They were dear people, They had a lot going for them. They all were teachers in Barry County, were musical, and attended the Baptist churches in the county. I think there are only two out of the 8 children of that family still living? Two of the girls lived to be in their 90's. Most of that family graduated from either Butterfield orWheaton High. Betty: My Uncle Clarence Saunders married Cora Preddy, Tom Pretty's sister. His father was Dan Sanders who lived in Butterfield. To my knowledge only the youngest son verdane, of Clarence and a middle son, Charles were the childrren to teach. Clarence Saunders lived his last years in the Mineral Springs Community. Charles taught school in the Cassville School system I believe. Verdayne taught school in Republic I think. I not only remember going to movies in the old building on the south side of the square. I also remember being at the very first movie in the new Hall Theatre on the west side of the square and seeing Glen on the stage asking the audience how we liked the new theatre. ----- Original Message ----- From: Loretta Vinson To: mobarry@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2008 1:42 PM Subject: Re: [MOBARRY] question The Ozark Theater was on the South side of the square until the end of World War II. Hi Cassville Connections, Dad was telling me about the info on Tom Preddy and his movie machine being part of the talk right now. I thought some of you might find the Bowl of Blackberrries Photo interesting. It seems as Tom traveled the country he came to the fertile hills of the Cassville. What a change that was from western OK, where he has lived for about 10 years. After Being in Cassville for a while, he was trying to presaude his parents to come join him.. He had this picture made and mailed to them. My grandmother Ardelia (Preddy) Tucker told me the story. I think the story says a lot about Cassville area. Hope you enjoye the photo. To view the picture click on the link below...up will pop the Preddy family and a story. As a teenager the family lived in Hammond, Oklahoma. Tom started working for other people around the area. One time when he came home he brought a machine that showed movies. He would put while sheets up on a wall at night and show the movies. Soon he started going around the country working some during the day and at night he would show movies on the side of a house. He would charge a small fee for people to see the movies. Soon he started doing that all the time. I guess when he came to Cassville he brought his movie machine with him. Soon of you may be interested in this. Best Regards Jack Tucker There is a story that I wrote about the Preddys coming to Cassville. I know it is on the Tucker Haddock site, it may be on the Barry County site. Jack <mdtuck55@yahoo.com> wrote: Hi All: Tom Preddy is my uncle, my mother's brother,. Actually the Ozark Theater was on the south side of the square, where Barry County Abstract office is now located (and also where Otasco had been). Movies were shown at that location until around 1946. Glen Hall bought the old community building at the northwest corner of the square and that's where Hall Theater opened. Cherry Bailey > Great! I seem to remember reading somewhere about a theater which presented plays and opera performances in Mt. Vernon. I believe it was on the top floor of the building on the square where Millsaps store was located. Don't know if this would likely be in the Cassville news, though. Great! So, from that we can say that it was the south building on the west side of the square, the one that was on the corner. I wondered if it wasn't there, because that is the old hotel building. But I can't imagine that there was enough room there for an opera house, too. It is interesting that Glen Hall's movie place was on the same block - but on the north end of the square. Hi All again: My daughter, Sarah Poff, reminded me a story about Tom Preddy. If there is someone that person might be able to shed more light on the building. If no one is on the site some one around Cassville may know some of the Tom Preddy people and might be able to shed some light on the building. I remember my Mother, Ardealia (Preddy) Tucker talking about Uncle Tom's movies. However that is all I remember about it. Jack Tucker "Linda D.
