There was a family by the name of Black who lived very near Clark School, in fact he was on the Clark School Board, and near New Hope Church. His daughter in law was in the quilting group at Cassville and she is a prize winning quilter! Good afternoon: I have been trying out my new program and am still creating some pretty strange words. It's odd how a piece of software can do so much. It helps the most with answering e-mails. The problem with it is that everything has to be proofread over and over. It has a training section. And so I think that it would be easier to use if I could train it to speak with a southern accent. Thank is not think and please is not police but it doesn't know that yet. I have some new things for you today - one is the July 4, 1918 Cassville Republican newspaper transcription. This I did with my new software. And yes I did proofread it over and over - but if you find mistakes, please let me know. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/news/news.htm And so that I don't have to post several links I will tell you to look in the photo section, in photo book 3 for the Walden family and the Chitwood family for these newest photo additions. Rose M. Newton sent the Chitwood information and Susan HarKer sent six new Walden photos. These are all nice additions and add a lot to our web site. Rose included a diagram of a monument that used to be a Chitwood. She said it was there up to 1968. I don't know when it disappeared but I do remember it was there back in the 60s. It's odd that something like this, I mean so big, could disappear. Do any of you, besides me, remember seeing this huge monument that was a Chitwood? http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/photos/index.htm A few days ago I posted some new death certificate abstracts and new obituaries. Those came in from Beverly Matthews, Francis Albert and Jackie Moore. The names concerned were Henderson, Shoopman, Vineyard, Pruitt, Petty Higgs and Brattin. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Our thanks to Darla Marbut who noticed that A. J. Henderson Cemetery was not the one called Macedona and that it was the P. P. Henderson Cemetery as presently marked. Also with a keen eye she noticed in the old newspapers that McKinney Cemetery was called Hailey Cemetery. Probably because it is located in Hailey Hollow. Thanks to all who helped with today's new items. Donna Cooper
From what I have been told by a member of the family whose ancestors donated the land for the Black School Darla is correct. The original school, which was a log structure, sat closer to the creek out Y Highway. After it burned down the new school was built at a different location across Y. The school has been moved now to the museum. I have a photo of the school as it sat before we moved the roof and moved the school. If you would like a copy of that photo please let me know. To my knowledge Black school wasn't segregated and probably named after a last name of Black as there were families in Barry Co whose last names were Black. According to information told to me, the original site was on what became the Charley Edmonson property on Flat Creek. In 1909 it was B.J. Black. On this site there is a 1909 Atlas (Plat) Map, in Township 23 N. Range 27 W Sections 15 and 16, there is a school that I believe is the Black School. It appears in Section 16. Across the road in Section 15 is a B.J. Black. In 1909 I think it is possible the school house setting in Section 16 is the Black School's 2d location with Black School's 1st location being across the road in Section 15 and possibly on B.J. Black's land. How Black School's 3d location is South of Cassville, Barry Co, Mo at the Barry Co. Museum. I have Joshua Hall from Burke and Macon County North Carolina--migrated to Barry Co Missouri around 1840's. Don't know if there is any connection. Joshua Hall Jr. married Virginia Jane Queen and had John Payton Hall--my line. Susan R. **************Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living. There was an Elbert Hall who wearied Lucinda Rose. They had a son John Paten Hall who was called Payton Hall, I believe. I don't know for sure, but it is possible that Phyllis Long may have some information about them. Also in my memory bank is a John Payton Hall who married a Lucretia Matilda Laughlin. They were McDonald County, Missouri people, but had descendents in both Barry and McDonald. James Hall who was a son of John Payton and Louisa (Mashburn) Hall and he married Missouri Ann Woodard. John was born in Burke Co., NC. Missouri Ann Woodard was a daughter of George Washington, Jr. and his wife Sarah Spurlock They lived in the Powell area but had descendants in Barry. The Woodard family was from Rappanhannock Co., VA and it was George's father that the bushwhackers hanged. Thet first lived in Ash Township near Mayflower. Most are buried in Roller Cemetery, west of Washburn. This cemetery is near the line. You can see the line marker from the Roller grounds. There is an old school and church building and the cemetery but that is all there is in the community that is called Roller. There are also Halls buried there. The Hall, Rose, Ellis, Woodard, Laughlain, Morgan, Van Zandt and other inter-related families live in the Roller community or in Sugar Creek Twp., west of Washburn. There are some of these families in McDonald County and some are in Barry County. Hi All: During the late 40's and early 50's there was a man named Fred Black. He was president of the Barry County Bank. I banked at his bank for several years. I knew there were several families in Barry County with the last name of Black. I hope this sheds a little light on the subject. Good Evening: I think it may have been Nora Eden who suggested, on the list, a program where a person could speak and type. "Naturally Speaking" is such a program and I now own it. The bad news is that I am in great need of this unique program since I now have a problem with both hands. Age, joint and bone problems add to the trouble I am experiencing. At times I think that I must be the only one who is aging since the rest of the world seemed to be spinning in quick motion. The problem, as I see it, is that these people who created this program didn t learn English in Barry County, Missouri. So, as you may have guessed I have created some funny words. I didn't know please sounded at all like police. Also I think that I can probably type faster than I can speak - it is slow but at least it is getting done. My test run is with this message and the data from the June 27, 1918 Cassville Republican. So if you see words that appear to be out of order or not spelled correctly then please let me know so I can correct and adjust. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/news/7/index-7.htm My mailbox is full and so I will try my best to answer your mail with this new program. I also have some photos to post and so I will try and see if I can use this program to do that, too. Hang in there with me. This shall pass. Donna Cooper
Actually, I borrowed that picture from the former Kathleen Eckels. She and her husband, the late Carl Crabb, both grew up in that area, fairly close to each other. Kathleen was kind enough to let me send a copy of it to the site. Actually, the Clay Hill School building is still there, although it's full of hay and whatnot now. If a person goes south of Aurora on highway 39 about 4-5 miles, you would come to the Madry store. Wait a minute----back up just a smidge to where the OLD Madry store used to be. It'll be on the right, or west side of the road. The old store is falling down, and there is a house behind it. Those folks' driveway continues into a field, and if you follow it, first you would pass the Williams Cemetery on the right side, and then looming in front of you is a huge old school building across a woody area. Even the road that went to the school from north/south is gone now as well. I'd like to get in there and poke around a bit. jay trace --- Donna Cooper <saarisr@sbcglobal.net> wrote: > List Readers: Our Featured photo this week is of > Clay Hill School, 1939, and > it was sent to us by Jay Trace. > > He found the photo floating around out there > somewhere. Thanks for the come back. This is a different Elizabeth Hall. My Elizabeth Ann Hall born 1833 was married to John B. Kring in Morgan Co., KY in 1858. They had 6 children including another one named Elizabeth Kring born 1866. They lived in Menifee Co., KY. It is Elizabeth's brother George Washington Kring born 1862 who moved to Barry Co. He is my great grandfather. He married Molly Maryline Woody in 1888. So therefore, he had to have moved to MO before then. I have letters between him and a brother, John and his mother back in KY. I know James and Elizabeth Hall lived in Kentucky for awhile. James died there and Elizabeth moved on to Benton Co. Arkansas with some of her children after his death. Elizabeth is listed on a application for Revolutionary War Widow's pension in Harlan Co. Kentucky.
