Linda, I "second" that, many thanks. I understand plans are under way for the committee to restore and put up a memorial stone for those buried on what was once the Barry Co Poor Farm. I imagine donations for the memorial stone will be needed. So far several names of those buried there have been found. I know the committee would welcome any information anyone has on who is buried there. To ALL the cemetery committee crew - a great BIG thank you for all the hard work :o) ----- Original Message ----- From: Jack Fly To: mobarry@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, March 10, 2008 10:05 PM Subject: [MOBARRY] BCGHS CEMETERY RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION COMMITTEE MOBARRY READERS, A month ago I ran into Darla Marbut at the store and she said that she hadn't heard much out the Cemetery Committee lately. I got to thinking and you know she was right! So I thought I would recap for you what we accomplished in 2007 and share with you some of the work that lies ahead of us in 2008. Ted Roller, Jay Trace and myself spent a good part of last year tramping through the hills of Barry County enduring heat, cold, snakes, tick and chiggers in an effort to locate, photograph, preserve and protect our ancestor's final resting places. A recap of last years work shows that landscape work and/or stone repairs were performed in the following cemeteries. Corsicana Cemetery--Worked on storm damage. Henry Hadley Cemetery--Restored and fenced. Restoration made possible by George's Inc. John Hadley Cemetery--Restored and fenced. Restoration made possible by George's Inc. Haddock Cemetery--Located, read and photographed. Need attention. Higgs Cemetery--Assisted Higgs relatives in clean up efforts. Clark Farm Cemetery--Located, read and photographed. Needs attention. H. L. Jackson Cemetery--Located, read and photographed. Lee Grave Site--Located, read and stones restored. Liberty Cemetery--Located, read and photographed. Maddy Cemetery--Stone reset. Truelove Cemetery--Stones reset. Mt. Comfort Cemetery located. Monett IOOF--Jay's great work on photographing all stones. Stinnett Cemetery--Monett Boy Scouts began the work of clearing and fencing. Sulherd Cemetery--Read and photographed. The following are examples of why the BCGHS has taken action to save and protect our abandoned cemeteries. McDowell Cemetery--DESTROYED, located by dowsing. Cemetery on Jack Freeman farm--DESTROYED, located by dowsing. Burials on Betty Jo Thomas farm--DESTROYED, located by dowsing. Keetsville Cemetery--DESTROYED, located by dowsing, some stones found. Star City Ranch Cemetery--DESTROYED, located by dowsing. Stringer Cemetery--DESTROYED, located by dowsing, some stones found. Unfer Farm Cemetery--DESTROYED, located by dowsing, markers found. The Committee is in the process of laying out our plans for 2008. Although plans are not complete we have several projects in the works. Currently the Stinnett Cemetery is being cleared by the Monett Boy Scouts. The County road crew has widen the road in front of the cemetery and removed all the trees. Soon the Scouts will fence the portion along the road and install a walk in gate. The BCGHS Committee will reset and restore the stones after the landscape work is completed. The H.L. Jackson Cemetery is scheduled to be fenced and restored soon. We are waiting for a bid for fencing the cemetery. As soon as we work out a price, work will begin there. I have the stones repaired and in my garage waiting to be reset. Ted Roller and myself cleared and recorded the Anderson Cemetery in February. We reset the stones and staked off unmarked graves for pictures. Donna will have those pictures to post when she returns. We have several other projects in the works and I'll keep you updated as they progress. Jack Fly BCGHS Cemetery Committee Please tell us about your Barry County ancestors. Dear Jack, Jay, Ted, et al ... Our whole-hearted thanks and appreciation for the more-than-fantastic job done on finding, repairing, restoring, and photographing Barry County's cemeteries and freely sharing all that priceless information with the rest of us . The hours and hours so many people have spent wading through weeds-mud-chiggers-ticks, in the cold of winter and stifling summer heat, just boggles my mind; such dedication cannot be begged or bought. The reward is the satisfaction you have in knowing that you've done everything you could do to respect and preserve the graves of your and our families, and to leave our descendents a rich heritage for the future. Thank you, one and all. Linda Stephens McCormick **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. (http://money.aol.com/tax?NCID=aolprf00030000000001)

There was information about the Black School on the site a few weeks ago. It was mentioned that the Black School that was a log cabin on the B.J. Black property. We are very thankful for obituaries and all those who have worked to gather them. If you are new to the site and wonder where to post obituaries here is the link. Besure to read the instructions on the page when it comes up...then please post them. Obituaries have a lot of information in them or at least clues about the families. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/data/obits/subobit.htm Thanks to all, Darla ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda D. List Readers: I put the featured photo to bed with pictures of Roaring River since that is a place that Barry County folks like to visit the most. These photos will ride there till I return to my posting duties. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm I have been using my new software and reading newspapers. This morning I have all of July 1918 posted. Among these papers were letters from soldier boys and obituaries, and of course, some community items. By the way, my new software is working better since I have taught it how to pronounce some words southern style. One of the main problems that I see is that words that were used around hundred years ago are not used anymore. And, too, some words were used differently in those days than now. Grammatically, it is pretty obvious, that the Barry County papers did not win any awards. Nonetheless, I enjoy reading them and I know you do, too, and so I have a few new ones for you to enjoy today. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/news/7/index-7.htm While I'm away and recuperating from surgery, Darla has some ideas for the list that she will throw your way. So please hang in there with us and don't unsubscribe, I am sure that she will try and make it interesting for you. And - thank you for the well wishes that you been sending my way. I'll use them tomorrow. [smile] Donna Cooper ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo!
