    3. Jay, I just spent a while looking at 1912--didn't volunteer because I wasn't sure how long it would take. It goes pretty fast so if no one else is asking, I will take 1912. I assume "Potters Field Cassville, " would be what we should look for? If so, John Andrew Bowman June 19, 1892 - February 6, 1912, was buried there. I'm still looking. LoVella ----- Original Message ----- From: jay trace To: mobarry-l@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 10:49 PM Subject: [MOBARRY] Poor House Dear List, As has been mentioned here before, there is some work being done to try to "de-forest" some burial sites that have been used for the residents of the Barry County Poor Farm down in Cassville. Work is slowly but surely being completed, and research continues to be done on this project. With Donna down for a while, and MOBARRY submissions at a bit of a standstill until her return, we had a thought. We are trying to determine how many people might be buried at the Poor Farm burial sites, and who they happen to be. None of the graveyards have any markers, and the ultimate goal is to clear away brush, trash, etc., and to erect markers at each site detailing folks we know to be buried there. Of course, these names would be included only with no objection from family members, as there is a stigma attached with association to the Poor Farm. If anyone has some free time, we could really use some spare sets of eyes. At the following website-- http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/ the State of Missouri makes available actual scanned images of death certificates from the years 1910 to 1957. A person can narrow a search down to the year and county, but there is no search engine available as to where one particular person or another is buried. We need folks that can pick a year, search through the names and pick out the folks that are buried in the Poor Farm, Poor House, County Farm, Alms House, or any other location that might be another name for this place. That way we can have as detailed a list of names as possible. Jack Fly and Ted Roller have researched plat maps, state, county, and local records, etc. and have uncovered a wealth of information. Mostly what we are after now is names. I'm going to start off with 1910. Since I have dial-up, it'll take a while, as a person has to view each image. I think it'll be worth it, though, as these lost souls have no one to remember them. If you could help out, please respond to the MOBARRY mailing list with a year between 1911 and 1957, and I'll keep track of who's doing what. Just e-mail me at jibberish66@yahoo.com with names and dates, and we'll do the rest. 3. I've been told there was an older school I'm not sure exactly where it was located but it was near by. The one that is there now is in its original spot as far as I know as my mother showed me where the wood shed would have been. I'll ask my cousin and she can ask her mother who is 93 and once lived in the area of Roaring River. 3. Oh yes!!! I think restoration of the oneroom school at Roaring River would be fabulous! What an absolutely perfect place to do something like this!!! It is a wonderful place for teachers to visit with classes and would do so much to preserve the history in a spot we dearly love!!! In miles, I am a bit removed from Roaring River since I live in Kansas City...but that shouldn't matter! I travel down all the time as my parents live in Joplin. I know I am getting way ahead of anything here, but I can tell you that if this project gets underway, I will happily volunteer my efforts to compile art related lessonplans that can evntually be downloaded for teachers to use with their students. Though retired, I am still a certified art educator for grades K-12 in Missouri and actually have Lifetime certification...so no problem! How fun it would be to design and contribute that aspect. I realize I am getting way ahead of myself but I think renovation of the oneroom schoolhouse you mentioned is a super idea! I'm sure others agree! There are of course all sorts of things that can be done to raise money for the effort if indeed it gets underway. Please let me investigate further with CSAA about applying for the grant money I mentioned as well as other means that might help. I will of course be in contact also with the gentleman you mentioned in your post. Thank you for your input! I'll keep in touch...and of course any and all of the super people on the List will I am sure get involved eventually too!!! How FUN! However, I can't resist just sending a huge THANK YOU for all the work that has been done specifically in the area of photos and information about the old rural schools. I belong to the Country School Association of America which works to preserve the old rural country schools across America. I do not know if anyone is presently involved in preserving one Barry County school amongst the many I have seen online, but think I should mention that the CSAA does provide some small grants to groups who are trying to restore an old school for others to learn about, etc. So, I thought I should mention that. Of course, I'd also like to personally know about which school that might be...so, please share if you know of any kind of work along those lines. The CSAA is knowledgeable about paint analysis and all sorts of things that help in restoring a school in its true fashion. I am merely learning as I go though so have to defer to the brilliance of many others in the group. :-) Through my own artwork I am trying to also research and share about the children who attended these schools and create some sort of series with some historic significance to early education in Missouri. (I'm a retired art teacher.) Once finished I hope you won't mind if I ask you for suggestions for exhibiting the artwork in Barry County too. I have lots to learn from you and am so appreciative of everything you all do to preserve the history of Barry County. Thank you over and over again. Sincerely, Deb (Shipman) Rowe

    3. Yes, we're very lucky here in Barry Co to have people who are interested in preserving history and information of our ancestors....people who might be forgotten if it wasn't for them. Then we've also been blessed to have people who live out of state and can't work to offer to donate toward the expense of the restoration. If there is someone who missed that address....Send donations to: Barry Co Gen. and His Soc. P.O. Box 291, Cassville, Mo 65625...please mark your check that it is for Restoration and Preservation Committee. 1. [MOBARRY] Obituary Form For Your Use
    2. Darla Marbut
    3. This is just a reminder of how to post obituaries on the Barry Co site. I've used the form three times now and it isn't difficult or I couldn't do it. Be to read what Donna said about copywrites. Here is where she first told us about the form with the link: "List Readers: I have the obit submission file on the web and ready for you to use. I think that this will be easier for both you to use than the old way we were doing them. I hope that you like it and that you will take advantage of using it and the new death certificate submission file, too. Obits - Please abstract your obits if they are recent or if they have "living" individuals included. Recent obits will be copyrighted, so it is, by all means, a good idea to abstract them so that we stay in good graces with the newspapers and also so that we do not violate the copyright laws. I know that some of you think that you own the obit because someone in your family is mentioned, but that is not the way it works. Please understand unless you paid for the obit - you don't own the copyright on it. Please do not post them on the list mailing or mail them in an open message to my e-mail box. If for some reason that you have to mail the abstract copy to me, place the typed copy in Note Pad or Word. No hard copies are going to be accepted. (On this one wait until she has recovered from her surgery) Submit obits here at this link. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/data/obits/subobit.htm In case you want to read the guidelines, they are posted in several places - here below is one place. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Obits that violate someone's rights or the copyright laws will be deleted. 2. Linda D. Garrett
    3. Jack, Jay, Ted, et al ... Guessing that you are in need of money for all these many tasks - please give name and address so a donation may be made. Needless to say, living in Georgia doesn't allow me to help physically so this is my solution in order to be of help. I understand plans are under way for the committee to restore and put up a memorial stone for those buried on what was once the Barry Co Poor Farm. I imagine donations for the memorial stone will be needed. So far several names of those buried there have been found. I know the committee would welcome any information anyone has on who is buried there.
