List Readers, concerning the featured photo - Marilyn Beeson said that Ennis Cemetery is down the road. I thought it looked like a cemetery behind these fellows. Donna Cooper
Good Morning, the Monett Historical Newsletter is out for this quarter. Gordon Gray is the contact person for that. If you don't subscribe to it you might want to send him an e-mail and find out how you can get an electronic copy sent to your mailbox. [email protected] This quarter he featured my story on "Surfing for Photos", which included information about the Monett School System and some early photos to go with the item. But he has a lot more - in fact it is jammed packed with good stuff this quarter. As probably assumed, I am a regular writer for the quarterly but enjoy the other things that he always has included, too. Last quarter a nice article was one that Ted Roller wrote. Ted does a lot for them and is a pretty regular writer for the paper - those are always enjoyable. Ted puts a lot of work into being factual and so you can depend on his work being authentically verified with sources even if he doesn't always list the resource. Another interesting thing that we have going on is the Barry County genealogy blog. Most of us are new to blogging including myself, but I enjoy them because photos can be posted with what you write. Anyone can post to our blog without membership and this week the discussion has been about books on Barry County. I have it set where blogs that are posted come to my mailbox and this below is what that looks like. --------- In 1952 Nellie Alice Mills published "Historical Spots in Old Barry County", hardback, 154 pages published by the Free Will Baptist Gem, Monett, MO, and it was to tell us about the old spots of Barry that are to be remembered. Unfortunately, the book covered a lot of the same things that “Goodspeed's History” had already covered in 1889, except Nellie had some photos and of course Goodspeed didn't. Not to take anything away from Nellie's work, because it is a good little book, but it really didn't offer much about Barry County - and mostly covered the Monett area even dipping into Lawrence County some. She talked about the Plymouth Junction community and in that section she mentioned Walnut Grove, which is the New Site community. It is several miles from where the Plymouth Junction community was located. There is so much that could have been said about Plymouth Junction that wasn’t but perhaps space was a problem since the book is only 154 pages Posted By Donna Cooper to Barry County, MO Genealogy at 6/13/2010 07:02:00 AM Donna Cooper
Good Morning: When Darla Marbut and I were photographing Ennis Cemetery we ran into some people who use the MOGenWeb for Barry County, and in among them was Marilyn Beeson. She had submitted some photos and told us that she had more that she would be sending more soon. So that peaked my interest and once home I looked back to see what she had sent that we had posted already just to review myself on the Beeson family. In among her photos was one that featured Lawrence Beeson, Leonard Beeson and Earl Lyall during WW II. This is of two brothers and a brother-in-law so I posted it as our featured photo and sent her a note asking her if the cemetery in the background was Ennis. Here below was her reply - That photo was actually taken in the front yard of Everett and Edna Beeson's place, looking away from the house to the front gate. On the other side of the gate is the road. The house was on the same road as the Ennis Cemetery, now the property belongs to Doris Lester's son, Gary. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm I will be adding the Ennis Cemetery photos that Dalra and I took soon. Here we go - Mano is on the web! Yeah, clap, clap, clap, dancing now! And with that little bit of news I will tell you that I am going on a trip - packing the camper for a week or so. Sounds like fun, I know! But here is the catch, we have some cemetery stones to plant that we bought from Womack. It sure looks a lot like work to me! List Readers, Mano is almost finished. I have about 35 more to do and so I will try and finish it today. There is a stone that has me puzzled and since I know some of you are really good at figuring out what some of these old stones read I thought I'd ask if any of you can read this one. It is the first one listed on the unknown page and I have some notes there that I thought might help. I am not sure, however, if my notes are accurate, so your help will be appreciated on that issue, too. Also, I would like to know if the first man buried there was Abraham Lincoln Tow, who was murdered? I have a photo of what is left of his stone on the opening page. Edith Stever writes in her book "A Glance Back in Time" about this person - but I didn't see his name mentioned anywhere. If any of you know her you might ask her who it was so that we can add that to our data, too. Edith Stever's book review that Darla Marbut did is also linked to the opening page. Some time back Edith sent me a thank you card for adding this information to our listings. She said that she was happy to hear that we had given her book some coverage. I bought a copy of it but don't have any relatives mentioned in it - you know how that goes - just wanted to read it. *smile* http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/mano/mano.htm Donna Cooper

Jack Fly mentioned that he thought that Ephriam Hembree that we had posted on the Mano page was probably the same person that he had found a stone for in Old Easley. The military numbers match and since I don't have a photo for him in Mano, I think that he is the same person, too. The stone has E. F. Hembree on it with his military number - a Civil War stone. We talked about this obit have Hemphill Cemetery listed in it and I think that part must be a mistake by the paper since there weren't any Hemphill in that area. Inscription: "Co. L, 1 Ark. Cav." - Research Note: Online Newspapers - Mano News: Ephriam Hembrey, a well known citizen, died at his home near Mano, Friday morning, May 16, 1913, age about 80 years. He died very suddenly. He leaves a wife and 7 children and host of grandchildren. Funeral services were held at his home. His remains were interred in the Hemphill Cemetery. Cassville Republican, Thursday, May 22, 1913 - Ephriam Hembree had three wives: Elizabeth, Mary Ann Clark, and Tennessee Russell daughter of Milo and Nicey Haddock Russell. Tennie had 1st married Henry Dell and they had 1 son, Charles Dell. She married Ephriam Hembree March 10, 1907. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/oldeasley/oldeasley.htm Donna Cooper
I have seen index to a book published later, but I don't know if that requires permission from the publisher of the book or not. Probably does. List Readers, I added about 50 photos to Mano Cemetery today and will continue to work on it until finished. It is pretty small so it won't take long too do it. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/mano/mano.htm My son gave me an Amazon gift certificate for Mother's Day and so I have been shopping up a storm for new books. UPS delivered 7 yesterday and so now I am in book heaven! My Barry County selection is growing - and so I may run out of shelf space to store them. *Gee, what a problem!* On our blog spot I have started conversations about a few books that are written concerning Barry County or nearby. I have done some short previews. If you have some that you like you might want to review some for us. People really like reading about books that other people like or that they find interesting. To get in on the conversation you don't have to join anything - this blog is open to everyone. http://barrycountymogenealogy.blogspot.com/ Donna Cooper

The book does not have an index of names. I have been creating one, that now has 6330 names in it. And that is only for about 1/4 of the book. Any help or suggestions?

List Readers, it doesn't get any better than this! Check out Phyllis Long climbing over the fence. That is Jody Sellers in the back ground. He is the man who helped us across the fence with his ladder and went over there with us. Okay - here goes - Perkins Cemetery is done! We had a hand transcription of this one - but you will see that some of the dates were not correct when you look at the stone photos and compare. Many of the stones were broken off at the base and were on the ground. It is obvious that cows had run in there at one time or another. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/perkins/perkins.htm If anyone can do Skelton Cemetery - another small one - there in Seligman, please let me know Donna Cooper
Another one done!!! Here below is the link for A. J. Henderson's Cemetery. You will notice that a lot of the dates on the stones are different from the dates that Janice Vaughn posted. I don't know where she got those dates - if she mistakenly read the stones or if she had a family list that she went by - but the data that was posted left you to assume that they were from the stones. There were some big stones that are broken off the base and on the ground. Those two were face down and couldn't be read. There were several small ones on the ground and we took photos of all that we found. The brush was heavy so there could be some that we didn't see. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/henderson.a/hendersonaj.htm Donna Cooper
Okay, folks, I think I have our blog spot working now. Today the conversation is about spelling bees and ciphering matches and also includes picnicing as a form of entertaiment in the early days of Barry. On the front page of the Barry County web site I have a place set up where you can log on to the blog anytime. You don't have to be a member - anybody can post to it. http://barrycountymogenealogy.blogspot.com/ I posted a photo of the Freewill Baptist Church at Macedonia in the church book this morning. Darla snapped some the other day when we were out an about. I noticed that the first church there was built in 1875 and that the present building was constructed in 1901. Our newspapers that we have on line have a lot of items about Macedonia people and activities. Often funerals were held there at the church and mention as such in the papers of Barry. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/photos/church/Macedonia/macedoniaChurch.htm Thanks goes to Janel Foss who added an item about the Warren family from the Benton County Pionneer of 1966. And thanks goes to Linda Garret helped out by typing it for us. It has a lot information about the people who lived in and around Twelve Corners, Dent Cemetery area, the Mayflower and also Roller and Whittenburg. Whittenburg, I think, was actually nothing more than the area where the Methodist Church was that Rev. David Albert Akehurst started - it was accross the road from the Jody Sims Store. I don't know what they call it now - maybe Simsberry. That is in McDonald County but not far across the line. Rev. Akehurst had descendants in both counties and was mentioned in the article. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/warrenFamily.htm My Interent has been coming and going all day yesterday and today. Thanks to our helpers I have a lot of work to do so I hope it stays on long enough to get some pages done. Donna Cooper
List Readers, we have a photo of John Elwood Crumley for our featured photo of this week that Ladeen Crumley Johnson submitted. He is dressed in is World War I uniform. She said that he was an undertaker and died in Afton, OK, and that he is buried in Miami, OK. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm Thanks, Ladeen, for the nice old photo. We enjoy these old war photos so much! Linda McCormick sent us some nice photos, too. They are for Joseph T. West and Joseph when he was age 83, too. and one of the Pharis Stephens Children. The one of the children was taken in 1920. To observe how times have changed look at the little boy and how he is dressed. He is on the first row and the right hand side. These kids are really cute. I think that the baby looks like a big doll. Great photo! Here is Joseph, below, at age 83. I wonder what is in bloom behind him. Is it a rose? http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/photos/photo-3/westJosephT.htm And here Joseph is younger - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/photos/photo-3/westJoe3a.htm And here are the Stephens children - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/photos/photo-3/stephensKidsPharis.htm Here on this page are some of the 2010 Reunion photos for Southwest High. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/School-Book/Reunions/1960-Southwest/1960Reunion.htm The news is that we have a new blog spot and a new Google Groups site. I don't know much about either of them so I will learn along with you, I suppose. I have them linked to the front page of the web site where you can find them easily. I also set up a Barry County spot on Facebook a few days ago and it has a Barry County section. The Crumley photo we have this week came in from that spot. I thought we'd try some of these things and see if we might find some new comers to genealogy or some folks that maybe otherwise we wouldn't know about. But all of you are welcome to join in on the fun and use these spots. It is very good that folks can post photos on all three and so maybe we will find some more old photos for our collection. A photo is worth a thousand words they say and I think that it is true. Thanks so much Linda and Ladeen for sharing with us! Donna Cooper
According to the death certificate, this man was buried at Jenkins Cemetery. Is there a Jenkins Cemetery in Lawrence Co."? I don't find a listing for him in Barry. Just don't know what to do with him. Jenkins Cemetery Christopher Columbus Laws Apr. 13, 1859 Fayetteville, AR Apr. 25, 1916 Monett, Barry Co., MO He was married and a school teacher. Son of Alfred Laws and Mahala Danes both born IL. Informant was Nancy Laws of Monett, MO. "Deceased died without any medical attention. I am satisfied that he died from TB." His wife was Nancy Ann Henson of Hailey, Barry Co., MO....................It says he was buried at Jenkins Cemetery.
Since he was listed as a person that the county bought a coffin for I am wondering if he could be buried at the poor farm at Jenkins?
