    3.   List Readers - this is a forward - Judith, thanks for the nice words! 3. List Reders, Okay, so much for your rest - it is thinking time now. Judy Vietri sent us some old photos - one has a puzzle attached to it. It is of the first old man with the beard who is wearing a badly worn coat. Judy wonders if this is a Civil War coat that he is hanging on to. I can't say because the photo of my GG Grandfather James Pease, who has a Civil War Union coat on, has a totally differnt looking coat. He was in the Army. BUT, could this coat be a Confederate coat or maybe something besides Army?   http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/photos/photo-3/sikesPhotos.htm Thanks, Judy, for sharing with us. Great old photos! Donna Cooper

    1. [MOBARRY] Featured Photo
    2. Donna Cooper
    3. Good Morning, Since at the present time we have a mind set for Roller Cemetery at Garfield  I thought I'd choose a featured photo to go along with the same idea. So Jacob Roller is our feature for the week. As you know the Roller family belongs to both Benton Co., AR and to Barry Co., MO - and if that isn't enough McDonald County claims them, too.  I don't know what they called the beard that Jacob Roller has in this photo, but I bet it kept his neck warm. Thanks goes to Phyllis Long who submitted the photo of Jacob Roller some time back. Here below is what she had to say about Jacob. Jacob Roller Born: August 18, 1838, Roller's Ridge, Benton Co., AR Died: Jun 28, 1882, Barry Co., MO Buried Roller Cemetery, Near Garfield, Benton Co., AR He was a son of Jacob and Patsy (Brisco) Roller who came from Scott Co., VA Jacob married Catherine (Arnhart) Roller, Aug. 17, 1856 in Barry Co., MO http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm I have started working on the Roller Cemetery pages and have a few of the photos on line that Wilma Fields took for us. There are a lot of Barry County's early pioneers buried here and the cemetery is located just across the line - maybe less than a mile from Barry County. So, as guessed, these cemetery residents lived on both sides of the line. Many of them were born in Barry County and died in Benton County and vice-versa. You sure can't assume where they were born or died from the location of the cemetery because if you do - 90% of the time you will be wrong. I see on the web that some researchers list death places for these people as Barry County - but after running a check in the death certificates - as guessed - I see that they didn't die in Barry.  So, this is what I mean by no assumption will work for these families.  I am not a Roller family member so I hope I am getting all the notes correct for the cemetery. Anyway, if some of you Roller researchers want to add death certificate and obit post notes for me in the temporary cemetery folder that would be nice - and I sure would appreciate it. I don't want to be negative - but have to say this - please don't start sending notes for me to post to my e-mail boxes because I have so much stuff in both boxes that I would never find anything important in either one of them. It is like looking for a needle in a hay stack to go through the volume of mail that comes in every day.  The good news is that our temporary folders are easy to use. In case you haven't used them - all you have to do is just type and it will post your information to the web. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/roller-ar/roller-ar.htm Have a good Sunday and try and stay cool! List Readers, we do have a somewhat of a start on Roller Cemetery at Garfield that Wilma Fields submitted.  I found one of the ones that I posted in the death certificates for Vernon Co., MO, but haven't had time to look for others yet. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/roller-ar/roller-ar.htm Also Velma Allen sent us 3 nice McKinney photos and I have those on the web now. You will remember that the 1914 one is our featured photo for this week.  I love the photo she submitted with the flag on the front of the old car. See what you think.  Is that one a winner or not? 3. List Readers, I found something in the newspapers that I hope some of you can help me with.  Mar. 10, 1892 in the Cassville Republican this item below was published. And so - I am wondering if this was a school in Stone County or mabye one of our schools that we haven't recognized yet. Wasn't Jeff Cook living in Barry County? And - for Pete's sake where in the world would Sycamore on Crane be?  Here is the item: "Jeff Cook's school is out at Sycamore on Crane. We understand he has taught a good school, and this is his first. We hope he will see the day when he will be marked with Barry County's best teachers." http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/news/1892sycamore.htm Donna Cooper

    3. Good Morning: Our featured photo for th week was sent to us by Verna Allen. She said after she retired that she wanted to do her family research and so she is having fun with all the files that we have on the web site. She is related to the McKinney family of Barry County.  She, like most of us, has several Barry County families. She would like to hear from you if you are related to her McKinney family. I have some more photos from her to post and I will try to post those today or tomorrow - so watch for those.    Here is what she says about this photo. The date of the photo is 9/9/1914.   The man sitting in the front is Nathaniel Lyon McKinney, Sr.; Lucinda Tranquilla Kissee McKinney (his wife) is sitting to his left & holding a bouquet of flowers (photo was taken the day before her birthday); To the right of Nathaniel Lyon McKinney, Sr., is a woman (Katherine Ruth McKinney Swegart) holding my Aunt Wilma Swegart; To her immediate right is Vera Miriam Howe McKinney (the wife of Nathaniel Lyon McKinney, Jr.); In the upper left of the photo & leaning is Nathaniel Lyon McKinney, Jr.; Peaking over the shoulder of Vera Miriam Howe McKinney is her mother, Sarah Clark Howe; Next to Sarah Clark Howe is her sister, Mabel Howe; The little boy standing in front is probably Lynn Goodnight. The names of the other persons in the photo are unknown - perhaps someone seeing the photo will help us tag others in the photo.   http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm Thanks for sharing with us, Verna. This is certainly a nice family photo to have on our web site. Have a good Sunday. Donna Cooper

    3. Part 1 - of 2 Thanks goes to Frank Hatton and Loyd Bishop for the new photos that they submitted. I have some more photos from another submitter that I will try and post later tonight.  I have several new things for you this evening - first I want to tell you about the Ray family. Loyd Bishop posted two great old photos. There are two in the Ray folder and 4 in the Friday folder. Great photos!!! I think that you will want to read these interesting notes that were posted with them, too. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/photos/photo-3/rayFamilyPhotos1.htm Here is what he wrote to me - My Direct Barry County Ancestors are my GGG Grand Parents John X, Ray and his wife Isabell Foster Ray; my GG Grand Parents George W. Ray and wife Elizabeth Russell, and their oldest daughter Mary Isabell Ray, my great grandmother, who married Franklin M. Porter of Lawrence County. Here are photos for the only two Barry County folks I have, Mary Isabell Ray and her sister, Elizabeth Ray Sherry.   I know the picture of Elizabeth was taken at the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair, I'm not sure about the photo of Mary I., there is nothing on the matte to indicate it date. You may use them on your website. Mary I. Ray and her siblings were orphaned (See my bushwhacking story about George W. Ray on your website).   The orphans were apparently taken by Mary Phelps children's home, and later placed with area families. Of the eight Children of George W. and Elizabeth that have been found by this researcher to February 1992, only Mary I., Manda, William Levy, and Elizabeth had definitely been located.   James M. Ray lived with Mary I and Franklin Porter in 1880, but what happened to him after that is uncertain. Manda was living in Parker County, Texas in 1900, and it is not known when she died. Mary went to Oklahoma with her husband.   Elizabeth resided in Rico Colorado, and William Levy Ray lived in Arkansas, Kansas and in Indian Territory. Missouri is thought to be the Nancy Ray who married James T. Ashley in Greene County, Missouri, but this needs more research.   John W. was taken in by the Mayes family of , but after 1870 no record of him has been found, There is no record of Sarah other than the 1860 census. As for George W, wife Elizabeth and George's parents, John and I suspect they are buried at the Ray cemetery, but their graves with no markers have been long lost.   John homesteaded near Gadfly on the W1/4 of the NW1/4 Section 24, Range 28 West.   It is not known if the X in John X Ray was actually an initial; was his legal sign that was confused as his middle initial; or if it was a device he adopted to distinguish him from several other John Rays in the area.   The X was used in census and other documents. John and Isabel had nine children, and nearly all of them married and started families in Barry County.     Then we have some new Friday photos, too. They came in from Ray Friday and Frank Hatton. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/photos/photo-3/fridayFamilyPhotos1.htm The photos in regard to Raymond Joseph - Joe' Friday, and his family.   The first is a picture of Joe from the early 1950's, when he was station at Fort Eustis.   The second photo is of his grave in La Bernerie-en-Retz, France. The third is of his grave stone. Joe is the son of Bernard 'Barney' and Rose Ancevicz Friday. The parents are buried in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Bricefield / Pulaskaiifield, Barry County, Missouri.   The grave marker for Barney was paid for by his son, Raymond M. Friday.   Joe married Raymonde J. Matel, and they had two children. Raymond M. Friday, and Raymonde Rose Friday. The fourth picture is of their mother, Raymonde Friday, and her two children. The daughter goes by the name Rose. This son is a retired police officer from San Diego, California, and he retired as Sgt. Friday.   All of the pictures and information came from the family shown in the last picture, and they all live in Idaho. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/photos/photo-3/fridayFamilyPhotos1.htm Part 2 of today's new items will follow in another message. 1. [MOBARRY] New & Question
    2. Donna Cooper
    3. List Readers, I was just wondering if someone can tell me how Synthia Emeline (Beshears) Pippin, wife of John F. Pippin, was related to some of the other Beshears families in Barry County. I am thinking about Eli Beshears family - for one. At Rock Springs Cemetery - Synthia Emaline (Beshears) Pippin was added to the files by Phyllis Long from a death certificate and this was the one that got me to thinking about the Beshears. Jack Fly didn't find a stone for her when he did the photos back in 2007. I am not related to these families - but am curious about the relationship between the Beshears and other families.  Synthia Emeline had several siblings but I am thinking I may only have the family for one of her sisters - the one named Sarah who married Henry Thomas Pendergraft and some nieces and nephews who married into the Mahurin, Stephens and Cargile families. Synthia's father was Jess Beshears and he married Betsy Bell. They were early comers to Barry County - maybe before 1844 - am not sure about that.  Now, here is the big question - Eli Beshears who married Liza Cook, had a daughter Melvina who married William Oakley, a son of Benjamin and Mary Ann (Meyers) Oakley. Since Oakley Mountain was close by to the Rock Springs community I am thinking there must be a connection to these two Beshears families.  And as you probably already know Mary Ann was a daughter of Phillip and Margaret Meyers. Some of their children were Phillip, Barbara, Susan and Conrad - and there were others. These are the same Meyers who are also Moyers or Myers. Some are buried in Washburn Prairie Cemetery - but some also lived in Capps Creek Twp. - near Monett. Now, that I have got everyone awake - I must get back to the cemetery work that is at hand. I will have some photos and other things for you later on today. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/rocksprings/rock.sp.htm Donna Cooper
