    3. Thanks Donna, That's what I came up with too & thought that William & Nancy had to be her parents. Also Donald's sister Gladys was married to Vernie Clovis "Pete" Cline & after she died he married Leona's sister Pearl. Are there any of this Fletcher - Potts family still living in the area? 3. Nancy, Bill Van Zandt might know something about the Fletchers. His mother's name is Etta Fletcher Van Zandt. I say is because I think she just had a birthday and is 98.  I think that her parents were Marvin and Etta (Hill) Fletcher, but you better ask Bill, because I might be wrong about all this. Bill - you out there? We need to pick your brain. 3. Another note - This data below came from some of the Banks family members. William, son of William and Alice (Banks) Potts, had a daughter named Cora P. Potts who married Earl Mahurin. And another of William's daughters, Margaret, married A. D. Hix, but I don't have dates. And Donna, another daughter  - was born Feb 10, 1886 in Barry County and died Feb 04, 1961 in Monett, and she might not have married - not sure.   Donna Cooper ----- Original Message ---- > From: Phyllis Long <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Sent: Sun, July 25, 2010 8:54:02 PM > Subject: Re: [MOBARRY] Donald Fletcher > > According to this census, that would be correct. > > 1930 Census Missouri > Barry > Ash > District 1 > William Potts, head, age 36, married at age 26, born MO, parents born MO, > farmer, WWI Vet serving 2 years. > Nancy, wife, age 30, married at age 21, born MO, parents born MO > Jack, son, age 0, born MO > Pearl, daughter, age 8, born MO > Leona, daughter, abe 5, born MO > Vernon, son, age 1 and 1/2, born MO > Living next door is Alice Potts, probably William's mother. > Alice Potts, head, age 63 widowed, married at age 17, born MO, father born > TN, mother VA, farmer > Dona, daughter, age 43, divorced, married at age 24, born MO, parents born > MO > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "NancySeefeldt" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Sunday, July 25, 2010 6:06 PM > Subject: [MOBARRY] Donald Fletcher > > > > Does anyone know if the Leana Potts who married Donald Fletcher (b. 3. List Readers, Our featured photo for the coming week is one that I am pretty sure you are going to enjoy. It is of the Shiels farm near Purdy. This photo really belongs on a post card or on a calender. Or even better yet it would be nice in a frame hanging on my study wall. *smile*  Look at the pump and the old wagons in the background. I wonder what else is in this photo that I missed? It depicts a certain time in Barry County when life was simple and the farm was where things happened. John Shiels said this photo was taken in 1946 near Purdy. I think from his messages that his family lived in the Waldensian area. They came from Scotland to the US and from Barry County went to Washington state. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm Enjoy this great photo and have a good Sunday! CC: Thanks, John for sharing with us.

    3. Good Afternoon: Here are a few of the new things - will have more tomorrow or Monday. Jack Fly sent us some new photos - updates for Vineyard. And so, I will try and post those soon. On the Fletcher page that is listed in the Washburn community section, a researcher pointed out one of the people mention was buried in McDonald County in Antioch - Phyllis Long had a note on the page that she thought that was the burial place. So I added that information to her page - per her request. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/Washburn/index.htm Barbara Erwin, our obit lady, found another resident, Charles Ray Cargile, in the Washburn Prairie Cemetery. He must not have a stone since we don't have a photo of one listed. It is so good to find these folks without stones and to get more information on them, too.  This obit was also added to the obit pages for Charles Ray Cargile. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/washburnprairie/wp.htm and here  - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Jay Trace and Rhoda Wilcox made a correction tot he Bowsher pages. Rhoda mentioned that her grandfather's middle name was posted wrong by another researcher. She said her father put the stones at the graves of her grandparents when she was a teen. That correction was for William B. Carney. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/bowsher/bowsher.htm In the obit section Barbara Erwin added - Charles Ray Cargile, Joseph Albert Stinecipher, Alice Tennesse (Banks) Potts, Cleo Wesley Stephenson, John S. Cooper, died of disease in WW I, so a note was added to the WW I page, too. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm On Alice Tennesse (Banks) Potts the obituary has her mother listed as Rebecca, and as most of you know, she was Elizabeth Ann (Woodard, wife of Lot Banks. Alice lived one step across the Arkansas line from Ash Twp., in Barry County. The Potts farm border the line. You will remember that we have the Potts sign on the web site in the Civil War section. Their farm was where the first place the Civil War was fought in Arkansas. Troops came down the old wire road from blockade in Barry and then went on to Pea Ridge from there. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/civilwar/Potts/potts.htm Betty Cooper posted an obit for - Obie Stockton.  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Since some of you don't surf around on the web site much you might want to take a look at the new things that are going on. Some of the pages are being updated with both external and internal style sheets. In plain English - they are being moderized to web standards for today and so they should open faster and should view better on most browsers. World War I pages are getting a new face lift - hope you like the new look.  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/WWI/index.htm All of the World War II page have been given a lift, too. These should open faster now. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/WWII/WWII.htm The main page and also some of the photo pages have a new photo header now. I hope you see someone that you know on one of these thumbnails.   http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/barry.htm And work continues on Roller at Garfield. Wilma Fields submitted the photos for this one and so I am working on those. There are a lot of Barry County folks buried here. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/roller-ar/roller-ar.htm Thanks goes to our helpers Barbara Erwin, Jay Trace, Rhoda Wilcox, Phyllis Long, Wilma Fields and Betty Cooper - and also to Jack Fly for the photos that I have to post. 3. Ooops, I messed up. On John Shiels' photos - I wrote Margaret's maiden name wrong. Here is what John had to say about her. The pictures of George and Margaret were taken by Duncan Studios in Pierce City. There is no date on them but I would guess they taken in the warly 1880's. Margaret Dunsmure Shiels, born in Scotland was the wife of George Shiels. She was born May 30, 1835 and died in Tacoma, Washington Sept. 26, 1911. After George died she moved to Washington where several of her daughters had moved. Her son, Andrew (my grandfather) had settled here in Washington. 3. Donna thought the members of the list might enjoy reading this about Civil War uniforms? Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: Betty Lamberson To: Donna Cooper Sent: Thursday, July 22, 2010 5:18 PM Subject: Civil War uniforms Hi Donna, I just read your note and looked at the picture of the guy in the coat... It is possible that might be a worn out civil war coat... with any trimming removed...?? most likely union? I have been doing recent research on Civil war uniforms, As Ralph and I are planning on attending a civil war costume ball in Springfield next March. held by the Historical society in Spfd. I have in my book collection a picture book Called...Combat Uniforms of the Civil War by Mark Lloyd it shows many variations of uniforms. As we all know the union wore blue uniforms some wore wide brim hats a la General Grant and some wore the Kepis we think of as Civil war caps. The union army had more money to provide uniforms and they were more regulation. by and large the union units did not wear much gold braid their and sleeve trim was different. denoting their status...surgeon, private, navy etc. Most wore frock coats...but some just short jackets....Generally speaking General Grant's outfit of clothes was more simple than General Lee's...It depended on what branch of the service you were in...such as navy ..artillary..sharpshooters as exactly how the uniform looked..most branches of both sides had their own idea of was was practical for their soldiers and sailors. Even the different states had variations. Grant wore his pants on top of his boots. I am sure most had a personal preference about that? The confederates wore mostly gray, or butternut brown some homedyed..most of the fabric mills were in the North.. (but early in the war some wore blue...later in the war some wore blue but it was stolen from union soldiers they just needed clothes on their backs..) by and large they wore fancy uniforms trimmed in gold braid some with gold lapels many with gold sashes. many of their uniforms were double breasted frock coats with bright gold buttons down both sides and gold braid trimming the sleeves..As a general rule the CSA uniforms were less standard and fancier and flamboyant! wide brim slouch hats with feather plums...but the private soldiers also wore the gray Kepi exactly like the union..just with different badges pins and stars on them. some of the other CSA units wore a short jacket with no lapels with lots of gold buttons and braid and a gold standup collar with a gold sash. But many recruits wore whatever they could get together..especially by the end of the war. They looked fairly rag tag! Many of the Early CSA officer's uniforms were hand tailored, some by wives...of good fabric because their economic standard was better at the first of the war... Even Gen Lee wore variations. in photos..he is shown in a gray frock coat with lapels and yellow sash and black belt with big gold buckle and he is also shown wearing a frock coat with a standup gold collar and many gold buttons down the front most wore black boots with pants tucked in. I guess this is all to say.. their uniforms were not very uniform!! Thanks for listening.... Antique clothing and fabrics is a passion of mine. Betty
