List Readers, here is another puzzle for your peacful and perhaps restful day. On the MoBarry site we have Marvelina Scroggins Weston buried in King or P. E. Roller - died in Apr 10, 1910 and was married to William Weston - information is from her death certificate. I now that her daughter Myrtle married Lemuel Berryhill, a brother to my grandmother, and I am pretty sure that she died in Montrey, CA. But - the puzzle is where are William and Marvelina buried. I noticed while working on the Roller Cemetery at Garfield that a lot of Weston folks are buried there and many of William's relatives. To add a little mud to the clearness of this - she has family in New Salem Cemetery. Marvelina Scroggins Weston's death certificate reads that she was buried in Roller Cemetery - and doesn't state Roller in AR, or MO so I assumed it was in MO or they would have added that it was in another state. She died of typhoid fever at age 35 and was a daughter of James and Elizabeth (Young) Scroggins, born in Carroll Co., AR. She was married to William. S. Weston, son of James Kelly and Mary Ann Elizabeth Arnold, buried in Roller at Garfield. In 1910 she had 6 children listed and was the wife of William Weston and in 1900 she was listed with W. S. Weston. They were in Sugar Creek Twp., which could place her close to either cemetery. I didn't find them on the 1910 plat map, because she died in April and her husband was already dead. Barry Co., Marriage record - June 8, 1890 and he was listed as W. S. Weston. William S. Weston was a son of James Kelly and Mary Ann Elizabeth (Arnold) Weston and they are buried in Roller Cemetery at Garfield. Now - here is the kicker. Since Lemuel Berryhill married Myrtle, her daughter, then I know for sure she would be living near Washburn because that is where he lived. So King - or P. E. Roller would make the more sense - more than taking her to Garfield to bury her. Can any of you help straighten out this puzzle? I just want our files to be correct. Donna Cooper
Donna, I have a Hasting J. Smith who married Elizabeth Fergueson about 1866 who is buried in the Munsey Cemetery. Elizabeth's 4th husband was Charles William Carter and the information was provided by a Carter descendant, Georgia Hart. Elizabeth was born 1837 at Grandview, AR in Carroll Co, AR. On the thread it was mentioned Smith was buried in Carroll Co., AR. Good afternoon: Barry County is hot as a fire cracker on the fourth of July but we have folks thinking about doing cemetery work as soon as a cool breeze buzzes through one of our cemeteries. Diana Cope sent us a couple of photos for Russell Cemetery - front and back of a stone for Sunnie Stumpff. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/russell/russell.htm Phyllis Long added a few more files to the WW I pages earlier today. You will remember we put this file in a new format - sort of like the obit format. Sine we worked on these you will now be able to pull up a WW I letter and print it out on a sheet for your genelaogy notebooks. I thought since a lot of you have relatives who served that this would be a helpful asset to have on the site. Dr. Bailey, Clarence Beeson, Earl Brown, Ralph Davenport, Don Davenport, Dr. Gilbert, Dr. Kelley, Wesley Long, Elsie Sharp, Dr. Salyer, Dr. Russell http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/WWI/index.htm AND THE OBITS ARE DONE!!!!! By that I mean that they have all been put in the new format. This is a format where you can print out the sheet and put it in your genealogy notebooks, which I think you will like. Many hands have touched this database and many hours have gone into this process, so I want to thank all you have helped with this wonderful resource that we have on line now. My search with DreamWeaver reads that we have 7792 obits but I think it is counting some backup files and that we probably have around 4,000. Whatever the number it is a lot and should help us, as researchers, with our genealogy work in Barry County. If you see any obits that look like out of the ordinary or they need something done to them to make them look like the others - please send me a link. We want this resource to be as good as it can be! http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Roller Cemetery work continues. This is a file that Wilma Fields submitted. Roller, Reed and Robinett names were added today - more later on this work as the week progresses. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/roller-ar/roller-ar.htm Thanks goes to our helpers Diana Cope, Wilma Fields, and Phyllis Long for their help with today's new items. Doris, we have a temporary folder for obits. It is easy to use - all it requires is for you to know how to type. You can copy and paste into the note section. If there are living people you might want to remove their names and submit them as an abstract unless you know that it is okay to post their names. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Donna Cooper ----- Original Message ---- > From: Doris Foley <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Sent: Tue, August 3, 2010 9:44:30 AM > Subject: Re: [MOBARRY] MOBARRY Digest, Vol 5, Issue 201 > > > Donna, I have a number of obits that I have saved from the Monett Times. List Readers - World War I is on the web in a new format now. You should be able to print these files out and clip them in your genealogy notebooks. There are a great deal of old letters, many written from France, in this folder group. Although we have a lot of files in that section, we could use some more World War I photos if you find any that you can share with us. My personal thanks to all you have submitted to this war page and especally to our helper Phyllis Long for her help on the conversion process. She spent many hours working on transferring the old to the new format. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/WWI/index.htm And on the obits - all are in the new format but about 50 in the "T" section. I will work on those in the evenings until I get them all done. You should be able to print them out and clip them in your genealogy noteboooks now. If you see any that I missed or that look a little bit on the strange side, please send me a link to that one so that I can fix the problem. Yesterday I told you we had 3,555 obits on the site. I think that we have more than that - but will try and do another search later on so we know for sure. I noticed last night that when I did a search DreamWeaver told me that it searched 7,995 files in the obit section. So - that I'll have to check out and see just what is going on. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Now back to Roller Cemetery - Donna Cooper
This message is for Terry Hickman. Terry, I lost your e-mail address for the Orlando Hickman - WW I file - when doing some web work. I looked in my contact list but can't seem to find anything for Terry or Hickman. So - would you please send it to me so that I can post it with your file? In case Terry isn't on the mailing list - and someone out there knows her - would you be kind enough to pass this message on to her? Thanks a bunch! Donna Cooper
What a neat photo! Linda
# 14 is the photo I submitted & believe is Franklin Joseph Potts. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna Cooper" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Cc: "Linda D. List Readers: Our featured photo for the coming week is one that John Shiels sent us. Besides the genealogical value of this nice old photo there is the historical significants attached to the garments that these ladies are wearing. If you enjoy looking at old photos and like to look at the old-fashioned garments you will enjoy this photo. Will F. Simes of Monett was the photographer. He was located 3rd and Broadway on the Opera House block. Present day Wommack Monument is located at 201 West Broadway so I guess that they must have been one block from there. John Shiels had this to say about the photo - These are four of the five daughters of Missouri settlers George and Margaret Shiels. There is no date on the photo. You can see it was taken at the Simes studio in downtown Monett. Seated is Nina Shiels Maiden, born 1877. I believe she married a guy named Maiden in Missouri but the marriage didn't last long. Standing left to right as best as I can tell is Jessie Shiels Gillespie, born 1880, Margaret W. Shiels, born 1870, and Elizabeth Shiels Collins, born 1878. Missing from the picture is Annie Shiels, the oldest of the nine children of George and Margaret. She was born in 1868. The youngest, Jessie, was the only child born in Missouri; all the others had been born in Scotland. All of these ladies eventually moved to and died in Washington State but have markers at Waldensian Cemetery. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/oddsnends/bryfams.htm Thanks, John, for sharing with us. Have a good Sunday and try and stay cool today. Donna Cooper
Good Afternoon, Thanks goes to Don Warner who sent us an update for the people in the reunion picture that he posted a couple of years ago. Here are the corrections that he sent. These were made by Roberta Decocq and family. # 9 - Omar Reed # 17 - Carl Warner # 26 - Lafay Decocq # 28 - Truman Reed # 29 - Lynn Mutrux # 30 - Donald Cloyd # 31 - Harold Cloyd # 35 - Omar Reed Jr. # 38 - Judy Lorene Reed # 39 - Louise Cloyd # 41 - Sibyl "Sis" Reed # 42 - Olan Decocq # 44 - Esther Warner http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/photos/photo-3/family.reunion.htm As some of you already know, the Barry County web site is under major reconstruction. All the old pages that were done with the older code standards are now being updated to newer code regulations. This is being done to insure us that these pages will be on the site and still readable with newer versions of the web browsers and other changes that come about. And, too as most of you know, we have been working on the obit section now for several moons. The purpose of this is to get them in all in a format where you can print them out a sheet and put them in your genealogy notebooks. This has been a long drawn out process and I can see now that the learning curve was a little wobbly along the way. I still have some more to convert to the newer format in "H", "M" and T. BUT the good news is that "R" is now done and most of H, M, and T are done, too. When finished all will have the same look and so let's hope that I find all of them that need to be changed. But If I miss any, just send me a link for it so that I can get it up to "snuff", too. Also - at the present time - you may see some that look a little weird in these same letters due to the work that is going on. If there are any that don't open or that are in the new format that look a little out of the ordinary, please, just, send me the link and I will see if I can "fix' it. If you posted an obit - go to it and look at it to see if it has your name and correct address on it, etc. And if not, just send me a link and tell me what needs to be added or changed. On questions or suggestions - sending a link is enough - please do not send the obit. For those who don't know how to do send a link - go to the address line and copy it then paste it to the message. It's easy. Don't laugh at my famous words - "You can do this - I know, because when my granddaughter was 7 years old she could do it." I didn't know how many obits we had - looks like 3,555 are on the site at the present time. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Okay, enough said, now back to the grind. Donna, Unfortunately, the obit for her that appeared in the Rogers Democrat April 10, 1907, does not state where she was buried, and I do not find her listed in Roller Cemetery at Gateway, althought that seemed the most likely. Here is the obit as it appears: (from R.F.D.No.5) Miss W. J. Morgan was born in Clay Co., Mo. December 30th, 1852; married to Henry Roller September 1876. To them were born nine children, four of which preceded the mother to the better world. Four of the remainig ones were present at the time of her death, one daughter arriving soon after she died at her home on Prairie creek, March 22, 1907. She was a christian from childhood, a member of the M. E. church, a loving wife and mother. Together with neighbors and friends we extend our sympathy to the bereaved ones. - Rogers Democrat, 4/10/07 Henry's obituary on the Barry Co site, has him buried at Roller Cemetery, Gateway. He had re-married to Ida B. Morris in 1921. Ida is buried there, as is Henry's parents, Joshua & Nancy Pendergraft Roller. As you know there were a lot of illegible, broken and unmarked graves at Roller. Based on all of the above, as well as the obit you listed, my bet is that she is buried at Roller also. Summertime blessings are filling my days, but there is always time for Barry County! ----------------------------- I have a question about this obit. What cemetery are they talking about here? Anyone know? I wonder how this Morgan is related to the Morgan families that were already in Barry Co., MO; because Thompson Morgan was in Clay Co., MO, in 1850 and 1860 His birth place is given as VA, which might mean West Virginia. He moved right in among the other Morgan families so there must be a relationship there somewhere. But, of course, an assumption is not the way to solve this. I believe Ura Jane in the obit was the same daughter listed on the 1870 census as Wrigane. Ura Jane (Morgan) Roller On last Saturday, 23 inst, Mrs. Ura Jane Roller, of near Rogers, Ark., died after years of suffering from cancer. Her maiden name was Morgan and she was born in Clay County, MO, Jan 1, 1852, hence she was 55 years, 2 months, and 23 days old. She had many relatives and friends in this county, among them the Fawvers, Morgans et al. She was brought to a cemetery a few miles south of Seligman, where the writer officiated at her funeral at 2 p.m. on the Sabbath. The services were held under a large cedar tree and was listened to very attentively by the relatives and scores of friends. Owing to the fact that a daughter and her family who live at Coffeyville, Kan., had not arrived, Mr. Roller, the bereaved husband decided to stay in the cemetery with the corpse on Sunday night with the fond hope that the daughter might arrive on Monday morning's train. The writer presuming that the interment took place on Monday morning. The case was one that was calculated to excite pity even in the hard hearts. Mrs. Roller was a devoted Christian and had longed for death to relive her from the great suffering she had endured for many months before the final hour came. Exeter, MO, Mar 26, 1907, P. I think so, too, but was hoping we could get a confirmation on it before I posted it to the cemetery files. However, the data that you added does give more reason to believe that is where she is buried. Are there more pictures of the Potts farm? Jane Foley SC ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna Cooper" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, July 24, 2010 5:59 PM Subject: [MOBARRY] New Good Afternoon: Here are a few of the new things - will have more tomorrow or Monday. Jack Fly sent us some new photos - updates for Vineyard. And so, I will try and post those soon. On the Fletcher page that is listed in the Washburn community section, a researcher pointed out one of the people mention was buried in McDonald County in Antioch - Phyllis Long had a note on the page that she thought that was the burial place. So I added that information to her page - per her request. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/Washburn/index.htm Barbara Erwin, our obit lady, found another resident, Charles Ray Cargile, in the Washburn Prairie Cemetery. He must not have a stone since we don't have a photo of one listed. It is so good to find these folks without stones and to get more information on them, too. This obit was also added to the obit pages for Charles Ray Cargile. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/washburnprairie/wp.htm and here - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Jay Trace and Rhoda Wilcox made a correction tot he Bowsher pages. Rhoda mentioned that her grandfather's middle name was posted wrong by another researcher. She said her father put the stones at the graves of her grandparents when she was a teen. That correction was for William B. Carney. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/bowsher/bowsher.htm In the obit section Barbara Erwin added - Charles Ray Cargile, Joseph Albert Stinecipher, Alice Tennesse (Banks) Potts, Cleo Wesley Stephenson, John S. Cooper, died of disease in WW I, so a note was added to the WW I page, too. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm On Alice Tennesse (Banks) Potts the obituary has her mother listed as Rebecca, and as most of you know, she was Elizabeth Ann (Woodard, wife of Lot Banks. Alice lived one step across the Arkansas line from Ash Twp., in Barry County. The Potts farm border the line. You will remember that we have the Potts sign on the web site in the Civil War section. Their farm was where the first place the Civil War was fought in Arkansas. Troops came down the old wire road from blockade in Barry and then went on to Pea Ridge from there. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/civilwar/Potts/potts.htm Betty Cooper posted an obit for - Obie Stockton. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/data/obits.htm Since some of you don't surf around on the web site much you might want to take a look at the new things that are going on. Some of the pages are being updated with both external and internal style sheets. In plain English - they are being moderized to web standards for today and so they should open faster and should view better on most browsers. World War I pages are getting a new face lift - hope you like the new look. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/WWI/index.htm All of the World War II page have been given a lift, too. These should open faster now. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/WWII/WWII.htm The main page and also some of the photo pages have a new photo header now. I hope you see someone that you know on one of these thumbnails. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/barry.htm And work continues on Roller at Garfield. Wilma Fields submitted the photos for this one and so I am working on those. There are a lot of Barry County folks buried here. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/cemetery/roller-ar/roller-ar.htm Thanks goes to our helpers Barbara Erwin, Jay Trace, Rhoda Wilcox, Phyllis Long, Wilma Fields and Betty Cooper - and also to Jack Fly for the photos that I have to post.
