I checked the two cemeteries (Crane Community and Crane Old Town) on Find A Grave. Most of the graves at Crane Community are photographed and many at Crane Old Town. I do not live in Missouri, but have many relatives in both cemeteries and nearly all my relatives listings include photos. > To: mobarry@rootsweb.com > Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2011 16:57:54 -0400 > From: lwilson181@aol.com > Subject: Re: [MOBARRY] Anyone Live Near Crane? > > > There are two cemeteries in Crane on the Stone County web site and I am looking for photos from both. This came in on Google Alert - Neosho, Mo - Some of you may recall that last week I wrote about visiting the site of the vanished village of Corsicana, formerly Gadfly, not far over the Newton County line in Barry County and near Purdy. On Saturday I had an interesting telephone conversation with Mrs. Marjorie (Shepherd) Haggard, now of Neosho, but who grew up in Monett. Mrs. Haggard relayed to me a rather unique family story related to Gadfly / Corsicana. The narrative had been passed down through the generations, and like most family stories is hard to independently authenticate outside of the family. But it certainly is interesting. According to family records, Mrs. Haggard’s great-uncle’s name was “General Seigle Henderson.” Yep. First name, “General.” Middle name, “Seigle.” Now, many of you may recognize General Franz Sigel — note the different spelling — as that unfortunate Union commander who lost the Battle of Carthage (July 5, 1861) and later retreated, as well, from the Battle of Wilson’s Creek (Aug. 10, 1861). But as to how Mrs. Haggard’s great-uncle came to be named after this German immigrant in blue is quite the tale. You see, as the story goes, that wasn’t always his Christian name. According to family records, little General Seigle Henderson was born on Jan. 12, 1862, the fifth child of Andrew Jackson Henderson and Nancy Henderson (who eventually had 16 kids). Andrew Jackson Henderson was Mrs. Haggard’s great-great grandfather. One day not long after the birth of that fifth child, Andrew and Nancy, who settled near what is now Purdy, made a visit to the town then called Gadfly (later Corsicana), which I wrote about last week. While they were there, the story goes, a column of soldiers entered the town. Because of what followed, the presumption is they were Union soldiers. For reasons known to them, the Henderson couple hid their young baby in a flour or sugar barrel. Why were they frightened for their baby’s safety? I haven’t personally read any accounts from the Civil War in the Ozarks where babies were murdered. Perhaps the parents were afraid of kidnapping. At any rate, who knows what evil things occurred in that nasty war that either weren’t documented or have been lost to history? I discount nothing when it comes to the cruelty of that war in Missouri and this area (I once gave a talk to a group wherein I glossed over a couple of vicious acts of notoriety that occurred in Newton County. Even without going into detail, I don’t think they quite expected that. As former Crowder College speech instructor Glenna Wallace used to stress, “know your audience.”) But to continue the family narrative. The soldiers found the baby in the barrel. However, they promised not to harm the child under one condition: That he be renamed in honor of General Franz Sigel, which is just what happened, albeit under a different spelling. So the story goes. This much is certain: In the Henderson family records, “General Seigle Henderson” is the boy’s name. Exactly how he got that name is the family story related above, and which was passed down Majorie Haggard’s mother’s family until it got to her. As to its veracity, it would be very difficult to prove either for or against it. And so it is what it is. And I am grateful to Mrs. Haggard for sharing it with me. As she says, “this is just what was told to me.” One brief sidenote: General Seigle Henderson lived to the fine old age of 80 years, and is buried in Bethel Cemetery near Monett. Mrs. Haggard actually him met a few times at family reunions and knew him as “Uncle Seigle.” I haven’t seen his grave, but according to Internet info, his stone reads Seigle Henderson. Wes Franklin serves on the board of directors of the Newton County Historical Society. He is also a staff writer for the Neosho Daily News. He can be reached at 658-8443.

My initial guess is late 1860s to early 1870s. When I get it >>> narrowed down a bit, I'll let you know. Also I'm trying to figure out >>> which of James Roden's older sons are likely the 3 other men in the photo. >> >> The list-admin is Donna Cooper, address - (thedonnacooper@gmail.com) >> >> ------------------------------- >> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MOBARRY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >> > > The list-admin is Donna Cooper, address - (thedonnacooper@gmail.com) > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MOBARRY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > The list-admin is Donna Cooper, address - (thedonnacooper@gmail.com) > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MOBARRY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
