Actually the 1621 Thanksgiving was not the first. On September 16, 1619, 38 English settlers, headed by Captain John Woodlief, sailed from England. and landed in the James River in Virginia. On December 4, 1619, 38 settlers and local natives held a Thanksgiving day at the Berkeley Hundred Settlement as instructions of the London Company had ordered prior to their sailing, to be observed perpetually.
