Dear List Members: The Holiday Season is over and I am back home again. I want to thank each of you for helping to keep our list running smoothly while I was spending Christmas with three of my children and their families in Delaware and Maryland. I had a wonderful time but came down the flu the day after Christmas which turned in to pneumonia so my week away from you turned into over two weeks. I am doing better, still weak and coughing but on the road to better heath. One other problem while I was away, I had downloaded a huge amount messages on my laptop while in Delaware and my laptop crashed. If you tried to send me a personal message from the 23rd to the 30th of December, I lost it and you will need to re-send. It is time again for your last Quarterly Report for 2001 as to the membership of the MOAUDRAI Mailing List and additional items of interest. The MOAUDRAI Mailing List has 178 members, 145 of these are subscribed to the Regular List and 33 to the Digest List. If you would like to visit the archived messages you may go to http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and type in MOAUDRAI. From there you can search by keyword. There is a great Rootsweb site you can go to if you want to find out what Rootsweb lists you are a member of or need to unsubscribe from a list, just follow the instructions. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ I want to thank each of you for continuing to help make this list the success it is. I also want to thank you for your support of me and your willingness to follow the list rules. I have been a List Mom now since 1997 and truly feel I have the best List Members out there who have subscribed to the Mailing Lists I take care of for Rootsweb. Just a reminder so this list is better for each of us the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. If someone posts a message to the list that should not have been posted, please just delete it. Know that I am taking care of the problem. If you post your unhappiness, then you just continue on the problem. I know it is hard when your heart has been offended, but for my sake, and the sake of the list, please just delete it. Rootsweb has a wonderful Spam Detective and it stops most of it. You should see what comes across my screen. I have to look at each of them to make sure that what was stopped was truly spam. Once in a while, one slips by though and if this happens, just delete it and go on with what we all love, genealogical research. 2. If you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line it might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 4. The wonderful relationship that develops between list members is also one of a Mailing Lists Problems. I encourage you to respond to the entire list with genealogical responses, you never know who your response will help. In the same thought I would like to ask you to not respond to the entire list with personal responses. Such as the first message from a member says Says "Happy Birthday Joan" and then Joan says "Thank you" and then about 60 of our members also send "Happy Birthday Joan". This is what I mean by personal messages. Just keep in mind anything is ok to be posted as long as it has to do with the subject of the list. If you have a doubt ask me. KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net 5. Please keep your Virus Scan updated as often as possible. If by chance one of our members unknowingly sends out a virus, please let me take care of it behind the scenes. Know that if you received it, I most likely did also. If you are concerned that I am not aware of the effected system, contact me personally KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net Please do not post to the entire list the name and e-mail address of the person you feel has the virus. If you are interested in knowing about other mailing list out there, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html I wish for each of you a success in the year 2002 with your most difficult genealogical mystery. Traci oh my, girl I wish I could give you all of the answers, but don't know all of them. but in case I didn't tell you this before the blair list, has a lot of mcclanahan, descendants members on it. also there is a web site about the strothers. I remember coping some info from it, but can't put my hands on it just at the minute, I believe it was on myfamily.com or ancestry. also check on google.com. I remember it was really quite lengthy. good luck mary
Hey listers: I am still trying to make ends meet on my slave research related to the JOHNSTON family of Boone Co., MO, Bourbon Co., KY and Orange, Spotsylvania and Caroline Counties in VA. I need some help -- if anyone can straighten me out of a few items noted below. As usual, I beg of everyone while they are doing their research to share any slave related documentation they find. On my website, you can post wills etc., for families with Missouri ties with slave data here: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mo/topic/afro-amer/indexusg.html This is a complicated post.. which goes from VA, KY to MO trying to trace slaveowning families for my ancestors. First: Does anyone know about the STROTHERS family -- or Thomas C. Strothers.. I know the Strothers connect to the FRENCH, GRAY, TALIAFERRO, & TUTT lines in VA... but I'm not sure how the tie is made to Bourbon Co. KY. I believe I am dealing with descendants of William Johnston and Ann "Nan" Maria Chew. [Her parents were Larkin Chew and Hannah Roy] My brickwall is Robert Johnston m. Nancy McClanahan. I believe this Robert is related to William and Ann Chew Johnston. In reviewing the online Kentucky Records, Volume I BOURBON COUNTY WILL ABSTRACTS (Contributed by Mrs. William Breckenridge Ardery, Jemima Johnson Chapter, Paris, KY) -- I found the following will entries of interest: STROTHERS, THOMAS A. -- pg. 364 -- Wife Nelly Strother to Thos. Benson son. of Wm. 150 Fayette County that Zach Benson now lives on -- stud kept by Wm Markham ; to Wm and Thos. McClanahan, sons and Thos. McClanahan Jr., (slaves) to Peggy, Anney,[Aggie?] and Mariah, daus. of aforesaid. Thos. McClanahan (under) age 2009 each. Wife and Thos. McClanahan Jr., Extrs. April 3, 1798-June 1798. Thomas McClanahan is the father of Peggy McClanahan who married Robert Johnston... those illustrious Johnstons that I keep trying to pen down; and connect to WILLIAM AND ANN MARIA CHEW JOHNSTON. Here's a quick line up on the William and Ann Chew Johnston line from my understanding: William Johnston m. 1)Ann "Nan" Mary Chew; 2)Elizabeth Wyatt & 3)Betty Taylor. Children: 1) William Johnston II m. Elizabeth Cave son: Robert Johnston m. Jemima Suggett and 2nd wife ? Bledsoe 2) Joseph Johnson 3) Larkin Chew Johnston m. Mary Rogers 4) Robert Johnston m. 1) Ann Cook 2) Lucy Ann Overton 5) Judith Johnston m. Robert Farish 6) John Johnston m. ? 7) Benjamin Johnston m. Dorothy jones 8) James Johnston ,. Mary Ware 9) Hannahn Johnston m. Francis Coleman 10) Richard Johnston m. 1) Dorothy Waller 2) Ann Thompson Waller [sister] 11) Elizabeth Johnston m. John Benger (see Virginia JOHNSTON deed transactions here: http://geocities.com/Heartland/park/2512/Johnston.htm My ancestors were slaves in the family of Capt. William Johnston; son of Robert Johnston & Nancy McClanahan. The gap is who is the father of Robert Johnston? So I'm looking for connections via wills. The Strothers transaction notes a gift of slaves which is interesting except that I don't know how the STROTHERS connect to the McCLANAHAN family. I do know that John Marshall McClanahan -- a grandson of Thomas C. McClanahan shows up in Morgan CO., MO and is connected to the CHISM family. My great great grandmother Mary Ann Howard [owned by Jacob Chism] married Samuel McClanahan in Morgan Co. Jacob bequeathed Mary Ann to his daughter Elizabeth who married Lot Howard. Elizabeth's sister Priscilla married John Marshall McClanahan III. By the way, there's a John Marshall McClanahan I, II and III in Morgan Co. MO. Very exciting & more complicated. Back to BOURBON CO., KY for MCCLANAHAN -- There is also an entry for: McCLANAHAN, Wm. D. pg 360 Mother, Eliz. McClanahan; brother Thos. McClanahan. March 26, 1813-June 1813. Wm. Love, Wm Markham, R Williams wtiz. [I'm curious who the MARKHAMS are also?] Now THOMAS C. McCLANAHAN's will was written in May 4, 1807 and probated Feb. 1809. You will see below that "Peggy"/Margaret is listed as wife of Robert Johnston. I know the Hickman players pretty well... and can track them well into Missouri. I don't know MAURICE LANGHORNE [but I suspect he is the son of MAURICE LANGHORNE SR., and NANCY McCLANAHAN a daughter who is not mentioned.] No clue about the ELGIN or ELKINS. Also -- it is my guess that Agatha is "Aggy" Pullin - -and her daughter is "Peggy Dudley. I'm also clueless on the PULLIN folks. WILL OF THOMAS C. MCCLANAHAN p. 19 McCLANAHAN, THOS.-C, 476-Son, Wm., decd., his widow, Elizabeth; g. son, Thos. McClanahan; g. son, Wm. McClanahan; Wm. Brown and wife, Lucy; John Harrison and wife, Elizabeth; Jas. Pullin and wife, Aggy, g. dau.; Sally McClanahan, Polly McClanahan aforesaid, my daus., and widow of Wm., decd.; son, Thomas, my Military survey; son-in-law, David Hickman and wife, Clary; Robt. Johnstone and wife, Peggy; g. sons, Wm. Johnston and Maurice Langhorne; to Samuel Elgin and wife, Aggy; to Thos. Ashford and wife, Sally and Isaiah Elkins and wife, Ann, land in Woodford Co. Extr.: son, Thomas. Written May 4, 1807. Probated Feb. 1809. Wts.: Elizemon Basey, Wm. Love, Alfred Bayse. Codicil: two sons of son, Wm., decd., viz: Thos. and Wm. trustees named for Agatha Pullin; g. dau., Peggy Dudley, wife of Robt. W. Dudley; six daus., of Elizabeth McClanahan, widow of William, two of whom the above Agatha Pullin and Peggy Dudley. Feb. 1809. I found another will entry which ties the McCLANAHAN family to the JOHNSTON line... including the MAURICE LANGHORNE above... but I have no idea who GEORGE CLEVELAND is in relationship to the both the JOHNSTON, BRANHAM and MCCLANAHAN families. GEORGE CLEVELAND-Will Book D, page 94-Wife, Sally; friends, Captain Maurice Langhorne and William B. Branham, Esq. Written March 19, 1810. Codicil to Maurice Langhorne, "my small sword, presented to me by my father, and my military uniform;" to his son, John M. Langhorne; to Wm. Branham, rest of arms, etc.; to his son, Webb Branham, James King, "bound to me;" mentions wife's relatives. Written March 20, 1810. Proved September, 1810. Executors: Maurice Langhorne, Wm. B. Branham [I believe Branham's son Richard married Emily Johnston...see below] As some of you might be getting a little confused, please let me note the following: Robert Johnston and Peggy McClanahan had the following children: 1) WILLIAM H. JOHNSTON m. Rachel Spears 2) MARGARET JOHNSTON n m. James Keeney FYI: KENNEY, JAMES, of Bourbon Co.-(Will copy certified by Thos. P. Smith, D. C. B. C. and donated by Mrs. B F. Buckley, Lexington). Written Mch. 12, 1814. Names wife, Peggy Sons, John, Victor, Joseph, Moses, Napoleon Dau's., Maria, Abbe, Helena, Cordee, and Peggy. Dau's., Sally Barnett, Elizabeth Trotter, Nancy Rhodes, and Polly Hildreth. Exec's., Wife, Peggy Kenney, James Hughes and John Barnett. Witnesses, Thos. Rogers, Josiah McDowell and Alexander Barnett. Will of James Kenney, deceased, proved June Court 1814. [So Margaret probably got remarried -- but I don't know to whom..some of my relatives in MO have the KINNEY surname.. that worked on Ravenswood in Bunceton] 3) THOMAS JOHNSTON m. Marcy Bryan 4) ISSAC JOHNSTON m. Sarah Robinett [now I know there is a Nesbit, McClanahan, Miller connection to the Robinetts as they also connect in Boone Co., MO] There are probably other children but I don't have that information. WILLIAM H. JOHNSTON AND RACHEL SPEARS -- CAME TO MISSOURI FROM KY. Their children: Elizabeth Keller Johnston m. David McClanahan Hickman; Hickman's 2nd wife ws Cornelia Ann Bryan; children: Thaddeus B. Hickman, Sarah Ann Hickman m. Archibald Young - their issue include: David Young and Nina Young who married Henry Walker. Nina and Henry also connect to my ancestors via a plantation called Pleasant Green near Bunceton, MO. I have alot of documents on the Walkers. The Hickmans connect everywhere in MO. Robert T. Johnston m. Mary Ann Prewitt William H. Johnston m. Margaret Hutchinson [owned my ancestors in Boone Co., MO - -Margaret subsequently married Nathaniel Leonard of Ravenswood; Margaret's brother James Hutchinson married Martha V. Tutt -- my family was also owned by TUTTs] Elvira Johnston m. Robert Stewart Thomas Nancy L. Johnston m. Moss Prewitt Margaret McClanahan Johnson m. Eli Bass [their son William fathered a child named Tom Bass who was a very famous horsetrainer from Missouri. My cousin in Columbia married a GRAY -- whose ancestors were owned by Mr. Bass. I now realize that her family's owners and mine [William H. Johnston and Margaret Hutchinson -- were siblings. My ancestor AGGIE GRAY was owned by the CHILTON family which has ties to BLACKWELL, GRAY and STROTHER] Jacob Spears Johnston m. Pauline Payne Sarah Johnston m. James Keene [I need help on the KEENEs -- they are making me crazy too with ties in other Missouri counties.] Emily Johnston m. RICHARD C. BRANHAM -- see entries above with BRANHAM mentioned. Noah S. Johnston m. ? John T.M. Johnston m. Minerva Waters Mary Ellen Johnston b. 1826-d. 1829 I am noting so much information in my posting as to give other researchers an idea of how difficult it is to trace enslaved people. Here's a shock that perhaps will surprise some of you...now that I've worked my way back into Kentucky and VA -- all the families are merging into one community. In other words -- both sides of my family who were slaves in Central Missouri have ties via the surnames among the SAME slaveowning family -- 100 years earlier. My research began in 1870 and I am now looking at the mid to late 1770s. In other words, the TUTT, CHILTON, GRAY, and JOHNSTON all appear to have STROTHER ties... many of which seem to originate in Maryland. Interesting? Just so you all don't think I'm crazy making my way back from MO to VA -- here's the will entry for Capt. William H. Johnston m. Rachel Johnston: from Wills and Administration of Boone Co., MO 1821-1870 by compiled and published by: E.E. Evans and J.F. Thompson in 1932: WILLIAM JOHNSTON -- MOSS PREWITT; ADMR. Gr. Jan. 16, 1850. F.S. Feb. 10, 1854. Heirs - Rachel Johnston, wid. Nancy Prewitt w. Moss Prewitt; Margaret Bass w. Eli Bass; Elvira Thomas w. Robert S. Thomas; Emily Branham w. of Richard C. Branham; Jacob S. Johnston; John T. Johnston; ch. of Eliza Hutchinson dec. who was d. of William Johnston viz.[1st wife of David McClanahan Hickman], James, William, & David Hickman; Robt. T. Johnston, g.s. child of Robert Johnston dec. all of Boone Co., MO; and Sarah Keen w. of James S. Keen of Audrain Co., and remaining children of Robt. Johnston dc. viz, Joel P. Johnston, Nancy Thompson and William Johnston of Howard Co., MO. If anyone is interested I can also transcribe an abstract and some estate information of Elizabeth Spears -- mother of Rachel Spears -- daughter of Jacob Spears from Bourbon Co., KY. Now, if anyone out there is list land can help me track down a copy of the Johnstons of Caroline County VA by Elbert Felton Johnson...please let me know. I think this is a WRAP! traci wilson-kleekamp african americans in missouri http://www.missouri-slave-data.org http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mo/topic/afro-amer/indexusg.html P.S. Wait until you see how I can get the CAVE & KEEN families from VA to connect with the JOHNSTONS in Bourbon Co., KY and Boone and COOPER CO., Missouri... its CRAZY!
To all those who have helped me in whatever way to piece together a portion of my family history this year, I want to say how very much I appreciated your efforts and I hope that I can return the favor in the coming year. Hope that you each had a wonderful holiday and that you were able to spend it with those who mean the most to you. Rod Green, Austin, TX

Hi Mom Just like my real mom. Always giving guidance. Thanks, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Howard Fitzpatrick
Dear List Members, It is that time of year again when we suddenly will have an influx of new online genealogy enthusiasts with their holiday gift computers that are usually newer and faster than what many of the rest of us have. For a great many of them, it will be their first time online. Some of them will make mistakes and some may (will) unintentionally do things and write things that may be irritating to us and against what we have set up as our list rules. Please take this into consideration in advance and be helpful to them. If things get out of hand, know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problems. Just remember, one of these new members might hold the clue you have been searching for. Let us not discourage them before they have a chance to learn how this works. I would like also to take this time to wish each of you and yours a wonderful and safe Holiday Season. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
My research for slave ancestors in the family of Hutchinson, Johnston, Keen, Cave -- takes me to interesting places. I'm going to try and make the Hutchinson via the KEEN family connection and hope I don't loose you...cause it picks up in Boone Co., MO. When I ordered some papers on the Hutchinsons from the Western Historical Manuscript Collection -- there were names I couldn't connect... but somehow LLOYD, ISRAELL, KEENE, HUTCHINSON and THOMAS connected. The Hutchinsons and Thomas relatives show up in the will of Capt. William H. Johnston m. Rachel Spears. [The KYN or KEEN mentioned in his will is: Sarah Keen wife of James S. Keen of Audrain Co., MO] in addition to the Keenes and I was racking my brain trying to figure out what the hell was going on. All these folks and the same names used in each line over and over again. I compiled will and probate listing from Boone Co., MO connecting the Johnston, Keen, Thomas, Prewitt and Branham families and wanted to make sense of who I was dealing with -- they all have Bourbon Co ties -- as well as ties in Pennsylvannia -- Pittsburg. My focus is the JOHNSTON & HUTCHINSON families and their allied folks. [If you are interested in my list; I compiled it using the Wills and Administration records of Boone CO., MO by Mrs. E.E. Evans and Mrs. J. F. Thompson 1932. You can order the book from the Genealogical Society of Central Missouri. Bottom line; Bourbon Co., KY native Benjamin Franklin Hutchinson -- son of William Hutchinson and Margaret Hickman Hutchinson; brother to Margaret Hutchinson who married William H. Johnston [owner of my ancestors who came from Bourbon Co., [Paris] KY and his wife's family and his have links via Pittsburg, PA] and then second she married Nathaniel Leonard at Ravenswood [my ancestors were slaves on this plantation] in Bunceton MO; had one son named William Hutchinson. Benjamin Franklin Hutchinson died in Kirkwood, MO Oct. 10th, 1876. William's son Benjamin Frankin Hutchinson married Eliza Ann Israel1! [I have a letter from Charles E. Leonard dated July 6, 1893 -- son of Margaret Hutchinson and Nathaniel Leonard who writes an extensive letter to the grandson of Mr. Lewis Hutchinson [Margaret's brother] late of Pittsburg, PA. I can not read his first name well.. but his last name is Warfield. I also have a will of William Hutchinson of Kirkwood MO; who mentions his wife Mary Alice, and son Benjamin Frankin and his wife Eliza Ann... dated April 8, 1914. Margaret Hutchinson Johnston Leonard's other brother James S. Hutchinson married Martha V. Tutt -- the Tutts also owned my ancestors who came to Callaway Co., MO from Culpepper and Farquier Co., VA. Some of my people changed their names from TUTT to MILES. Here's a quick diddy to make the KEEN tie. Mathias and Elias Keen married sisters Margaret and Hannah Thomas. The Thomas sisters had a brother Nathan who married Rebecca Cottman; their daughter Susan Thomas married Jesse Waterman, whose daughter Rebecca Waterman m. Allen Cuthbert of Germantown, and whose granddaughter Susan Thomas m. Charles H. Israell and removed to Pittsburg, PA. Their daughter Eliza Israell m. Benjamin Hutchinson; their daughter Caroline C. Israell m. Joseph Lloyd. and their daughter Sarah Israell m. William Rodman Olden. Their daughter Susannah Cottman m. Joseph Harberson and their daughter Hannah Cottman m. Thomas Nightingale. Do you follow -- the Thomas line of children married into the Israell line and also then Benjamin Hutchinson and then Lloyd and Olden. This tied the pieces up I had for a will of Catherine Wilkens Israell: Caroline C. Llloyd of Ellsville, St. Louis, Mary Israell of 322 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh, PA, Sarah Olden of Seranton, PA; Henry C. Israell of San Francisco, CA; ELIZA HUTCHINSON LLOYD of Ellsville, St. Louis Co., MO, Catherine Wilkins Olden of Oakland California; William Hutchinson of St. Louis, MO and Charles Du Pont Breck of Seranton, PA -- all of whom were party to a transaction recorded in Poughkeepsie Co., NY. I believe the NY connection is Joseph Lloyd who married Beulah S. Emlen of NY, NY in 1830. Their son Joseph married Caroline Correy Israell daughter of Charles Hutchinson Israell and Sarah Thomas. I have collected more detailed information on the Israell, Lloyd family ties in St. Louis if you are interested. I can not vouch for all the information above; but most of it I gleaned from personal papers via special collections on the families noted above. Here's a link to Susannah Steelman and John Keen [Kyn] http://www.wildwoodweb.com/familytree/keen.html More on the Joran Kyn [Keen] families http://www.wildwoodweb.com/familytree/toc.html History of Ellsville, MO -- Capt. Benjamin F. Hutchinson mentioned http://www.ellisville.mo.us/history.html Hope this helps some one. My interest is wills, probate, land deed and bible records which may shed some light on slaves owned in the Hutchinson/Johnston family. For example, I have just learned that Thomas McClanahan father of Peggy McClanahan who married RObert Johnston -- father of the Capt. William H. Johnston m. Rachel Spears; inherited a tavern and slaves from Mr. McClanahan. So a will of Mr. McClanahan and Mr. Robert Johnston -- may prove helpful in how Mr. Robert Johnston and his sons acquired slaves. Hello: Can anyone tell who the wife of Robert Johnston of Caroline CO was and their children. Additionally, can anyone help me with his will. The VA State Archives has it under the personal collection papers.. and is most likely his final settlement and inventory. I will pay for gas and copies!! Also would like to get more information on the JOHNSTON/JOHNSON family as it is getting very confusing to me... I am stuck at William Johnston Sr., who married Rachel Spears in Bourbon Co., KY. I believe his father was Robert Johnston who married Peggy McClanahan. William Sr.'s son William H. Johnston owned my ancestors that came from Bourbon Co. KY into Boone and Cooper County Missouri. A little homework has lead me into Paris KY [William Johnston married Margaret Hutchinson who was from Paris... her parents were William Hutchinson and Margaret Hickman]. I am particularly interested in the ownership of slaves in this family which is very complicated at best. Here's were I get stuck -- who is Robert Johnston who married Margaret Peggy McClanahan's father? RObert Johnston of Caroline Co., or do I have the wrong line. I found Robert and Peggy mentioned in the will of Thomas McClanahan, "Peggy's" father. Peggy's sister Clara married David Hickman - Margaret Hutchinson's [noted above] father. There is also a McClanahan connection -- John Marshall McClanahan -- who comes to Morgan CO., MO and ties into the ownership of my ancestors via the Chism/Howard and Tutt families. I also was under the impression that Robert Johnston of Caroline's father was William Johnston who married Anna Marie Chew? So I am very lost somewhere in this game. If anyone has a copy of the Johnstons of Caroline Co., by Elbert Felton or can help me track down a used copy -- please let me know... I am in the market for an inexpensive copy. I know their is a connection to the William Johnson who married Elizabeth CAVE because I can trace the Johnson/Cave connection into Boone County, Missouri Thanks Traci Wilson-Kleekamp african americans in missouri http://www.missouri-slave-data.org

Tom Drake may have married 3 native girls and that is what made the judge so angry. Tom was in his late 50's when he married a young native girl, the judge's daugther. Tom already had grandchildren. Rufina was a child. Well, by today's standards. He married his last wife when he was in his 60's (he lied about his age on the license) and his bride was 15...although she lied and said she was 19. She was also native, but we have no idea what tribe. She looked "Spanish" is what I was told. Part of the family is enrolled on the Final Rolls. Mable Sue Drake Crow, wife of Andrew Jack Crow, enlisted herself, her two brothers (George Washington Drake and John Will Drake) and her son, the luckless baby who died a year later. She named her parents as Tom Drake and Rufina Folsom. Then...wonderful woman I'll never be able to praise enough for her thoughtfulness....she listed Tom Drake's parents, the only place I've ever found their names as parents. Simon and Patience Drake That led me to Wake Co., NC where Tom's parents were married in 1817. Simon Drake and Patience Gregory. So yes, I've been researching for years in Indian Territory, but with the advent of internet, I've found more in several months than I've found before through the normal slow procedures. And it's from wonderful people like you who take the time to explain things that make it possible. Thank you so much. Shirley Maynard

Mixed maraiges were common form day one , and very common i the territory. Have you contacted the Choctaw Nation, they mayhave record ofthis eithr via the tribal roll files, or via the claims files, which you can get access to yourself. Wehn a family filed for land under the Guion Miller--Dawes Act---they had to give their lineage, and also give that of siblings. If the Judge had other children the one who md. YOUR ancestor may well be mentioned. Judge Folsom was obviously a Tribal Court Judge, a mixed blood himself. He had no jurisdiction off Indian land, outside the Nation. I suspect wife # 2 was also Native. many whites, traders, mixed bloods were married within the tribe, or, by family members // friends--- who were MG // JP---it kept them out of the court house--the laws at the time were getting stiffer and stiffer--Jim Crow having raised his ugly head high over the years since the 1830s. The Osage, who seem to have big connections to Audrain Co., etc---were to become the richest Idnians of the time--head rights, oil money--and many families had ties to them--the Cheutreau (Chowtrow) who I asked about, many others. Whites couldn't live in the IT without permission/license in the time you are talking aobut. OR--and keep this one in mind--had Native family in the Territory. For the Historical soc. to say there "should be a record" is a blanket statement that doesn't ring true. Indians unless one was a Treaty Indian, or a Reservation/Tribal Trust land Indian---were not citizens of the United States (til June, 1924) and had NO rights---those who could, passed--Black, or White---and this type of problem split families every which way but loose. Hi: I have some Drake's that Married into my line of Flynt's that were from audrain and Mexico Co., MO, I will look tonight when I get home from work. My line was Richard Marion Flynt, married to Turner. Lived in Hallsville, Mo. for over 150 years. They are all buried at the Mt. Zion church in Hallsville. Judy
After the 1860 census and before the year 1871, my great grandfather, Thomas M. Drake and his pregnant wife, Sarah A. Smith Drake, and their son, William Joe Drake, left Greene Co., IN to travel in a wagon train on the Trail to Texas. Sarah gave birth to twin sons. One son died and Tom buried the child. Within a short time, Sarah and the other twin died. He returned to where the first child was buried, dug up the grave "in a saddle between two hills in Kansas on the Trail to Texas" William Joe remembered, then Tom tore apart the wagon, built a common casket and buried his wife and two infant sons together. He and William Joe and possibly another son, Worthy Drake, traveled by horseback to Missouri. Worthy was a sickly boy and didn't survive to have children. Tom married 2) Dice, and his only child by her was born 1871. Family lore says she was born in Indian Territory, but the OK historical society wrote there are no records of either the marriage or the birth and there should have been. That leaves the possiblility Tom and Dice Drake were married in MO and daughter Laura Drake born there, as well. Tom married 3) Rufina Folsom, a barely teen daughter of a Choctaw judge and an angry one at the marriage. There are no records of his marriage to Rufina in Indian Territory. Their first son, George Washington Drake, was born in "New" Mexico, MO, 10 Dec. 1886. His birthplace on the 1900 census listed NM and puzzled all of us, since we knew he was born in Mexico, MO, but an article on the county site explained the New Mexico name. The fact that Tom chose this area was intriguing. I wonder if Tom was familiar with the area as this was his place of "shelter" from an angry father and leader in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory where he was no longer welcomed? Could he have spent the earlier years in this area after Sarah died and prior to his travel to Indian Territory? By the birth of his next child, Tom and his family were back in Indian Territory. Father Folsom never forgave them but did allow them to return to the territory. Is there someone in Audrain Co. who could check for two marriages? Thomas M. Drake to Dice prior to 1871 and Thomas M. Drake to Rufina/Refina Folsom prior to 1886. And George W. Drake's birth? Thank you so much. Shirley Maynard Hampton, VA MaeMay510@aol.com
Does anyone on the list have access to an index for deed or probate records covering the 1867-1871 time period for Audrain Co.? I need a Power of Attorney, deed record, or will for a Dr. Walter A. Boyd in Audrain Co for that time period. If you do not have access to an index for those records, where can I write or who can I contact for such info? I am in need of a signature for Walter Boyd, which would appear on those records, as well as the actual records. Thanks, Sandy Boyd Lipsey sbjol@comser.com
this family has sgtrong history of Idnian heritage. One cousin said, recently, they felt the name was Choctaw--and changed for the reasons of prejudice. No, the Indian traders commonly had Native families--so---Auguste and his line most certainly had Native intermarriages. No one knew it wasn't going to be "polically correct" later on.
