Access to Records In 1910, the State of Missouri assumed the responsibility for keeping vital records. The records were kept confidential, as was proper, at least for birth records. However, some of the records are now 90 years old; it is time to place microfilms of all the birth records, with indexes, that are older than 72 years, and all of the death and other records, into the State Archives for full public access. Efforts have been made in the legislature, but the Department of Health obfuscates. The Department proposes to place on line images of the birth records 90 years or older and death records 50 years or older. That will be fine, but it is not enough. This is to urge that, during this political season, your candidates for the legislature and state senate be queried as to their positions on the matter. Owing to the Federal regulation that census data remain closed for 72 years, that interval has become a de facto standard in the USA. A 72-year interval suffices for privacy. All that is needed is to add to Sect. 193.245 of RSMO 1994 new sub-paragraphs as follows: (4) The department shall enable the State Archives to duplicate, for public access, microfilms of the following: a) all birth records that are 72 years old or older, and indexes to such records, and b) all other vital records and indexes. (5) The department shall enable, annually, the State Archives to duplicate microfilms of the following: a) all birth records that have become 72 years old or older, and indexes to such records, and b) all other vital records and indexes. Looking for descendants of my grandfather's first cousin, Willie Frances Beckley. She was born December 20, 1905, probably in Audrain or Callaway County, MO., a daughter of Walter L. Beckley and Ida Thomas Eller. Willie married Homer H. Hebel about 1923 in Missouri. Homer was born in Illinois on December 12, 1903. Homer and Willie are believed to have had, at least, three children: Henry Lee, born abt. 1926; Howard Wayne, born abt. 1928; and Mary Frances, born after 1930. The family was living on North Olive Street in the city of Mexico during the 1930 Census. Homer was a truck driver for a local oil company at the time. I do not know when or where Willie Frances Beckley Hebel died, but there is a Homer Hebel who was born on the same date that died in September 1974 and according to the Social Security Death Index on Ancestry.com, his last known residence was in Monroe County, MO. Thanks for your help in my search for "lost" cousins. Rod Green, Grandson of Rudolph W. Green Austin, TX
I am seeking information regarding the descendants of John Beckley (born in VA abt 1874) and his wife, Mamie Brett (born Dec. 17, 1879 probably in Missouri). They were parents of four children that I know of...Minnie Lee (date of birth unknown), Howard (born Jan. 15, 1903), Henrietta (born abt. 1912) and Laurence (born abt. 1914). Howard is the only one that I know for sure married--Genevieve Withers on Nov. 6, 1929. They had one son that I am aware of, John Howard Beckley, born after the April 1930 Census. Thanks for any help that readers might be able to provide. Rod Green, Austin, TX

I am curious if anyone knows anything about a Samuel HELM or a James D. HELM, both of whom were enumerated in the 1930 Audrain Co. Census. Samuel Helm was living as a "Lodger" and working as a "Laborer" doing "General Farm" work for a Will and Callie MONGLER in Prairie Twp. in April 1930. He was listed on page 2A, Roll T626_1174. ED 12, Image 0900 as being a 22 yr old single, white male, born in MO. as were his parents. James D. Helm, age 49, a divorced white male, living with his daughter, Mary S., 15, and son, Gaile T., 11, was enumerated in Wilson Twp., District 21, as recorded on page 5B, Roll T626_1174, ED 21, Image 1173. James, both his parents and his children were born in Missouri. The family was living on a farm which James owned, but he also worked as a "Laborer" on the railroad. Does anyone know, perhaps, if they are related to any of the HELM families of Monroe County, MO.? Thanks for you help. Rod Austin, TX
Joanne & Gerry: Here's some information that should be valuable to you both in this search. The 1930 Audrain County, Missouri Census reveals the following information on Roll T626_1174, Ed 14, Image 0941page 3B, First Ward, City of Mexico, Audrain County, MO on April 4, 1930 913 E. Monroe St., Dwelling 69, Family 81 (Note: Ancestry.com's Index shows last name as "Rudie". But, I don't know for certain their transcriber got it right or not. It almost looks like "Bredie". Perhaps, Gerry can find a city directory for that year with correct spelling.) RUDIE, James, Head, Owns Home, $4,000 value, Male, White, 42, Married at age 30, reads & writes, born in Scotland, father born in Scotland, mother born in Scotland, Irish native tongue, not naturalized citizen, speaks English, Mechanic, Brick Plant, Veteran, World War. RUDIE, Anna, Wife of Head, Female, White, 42, married at age 30, reads & writes, born in Scotland, father born in Scotland, mother born in Scotland, Irish native tongue, not naturalized citizen, speaks English, none. RUDIE Nan, Daughter, Female, White, 9, single, in school, reads & writes, born in Scotland, parents born in Scotland, Irish native tongue, not naturalized citizen, speaks English. RUDIE, Margaret Helen, Daughter, Female, White 8, single, in school, reads & writes, born in Scotland, parents born in Scotland, Irish native tongue, not naturalized citizen, speaks English. RUDIE, James, Son, Male, White, 6, single, in school, reads & writes, born in Missouri, parents born in Scotland, not naturalized citizen. Based on the above ages of Margaret and James, the son, it would appear that the family immigrated to the United States and Missouri between 1922-1924. Coincidentally, Gerry, you will find them living next door to George and Nora Gillman. If you've lived in the Mexico area for any length of time will know that name. Mrs. Gillman was a wonderful person who for many years operated a preschool/kindergarten in her home. My father (who was born in 1925), my brother and myself all attended the "school" as young children. Best regards, Rod, Austin, TX
Hi Joanne, I am a volunteer for the Audrain County Area Gen. Soc. My volunteer day to man the collection is on Tues. afternoons. I will see what I can find. How old would Annie be in 1929? Will notify you what I find & if you want copies of anything, we will charge a copy charge plus postage. A donation is always accepted. First, let me see if I can find something on her. ...Gerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joanne Robb" > I am new to your mailing list and havent done much research in the US yet but I think that may be changing. I am researching my Robb family from Scotland and have just located a few letters, dated 1929, from a daughter, Annie. On these letters there is a return address of 913 E Monroe Street, Mexico, Missouri. I am assuming she has married and emigrated there but have no idea of her spouses name. There is no mention of a last name on these letters. Does anyone have a suggestion on how I might find this out. Thanking you for your time > Joanne Robb

George, it's a long shot, but could your Robert EBBENS be the same as my Robert EVANS, son of Wm B. and Martha Evans? Wm and Martha lived in Audrain County from 1835 to about 1856-60, then moved to Mercer County, MO. I have no other info on Robert, other than the location of his father's lands in Audrain County. TIA. John
Looking for descendants of Anna Zimmermann Winkler (1844-1924) and her brother John Zimmermann (1855-1928). They are the sister and brother of my great-grandmother Elizabeth Zimmermann Strotheide.
George, there is a web site"www.state.mo.us". This will tell you how to request a death certificate. Howard
There are some cemetery listing books that might show him if he was buried in Audrain. I don't have those books though. I will be in Mexico, MO next month and could take a stab at looking if I have time. Also, did you look in the 1900 census for the family?
