Looking for the address of Nancy (Geniebug) who contacted me about an 1870 census question. I have the information, but lost her address. Monica
Marie Fox, Could you contact me with your email address? I printed out your last letter to me about Long Branch Cemetery, but it didn't print your return address, and I need to contact you. Sorry for the confusion. Monica
John Bennett, THANKS for sharing the obituary with the List. I, for one, found a wealth of clues about the interwoven families (resulting from the Copple sisters) of Andrew and Nodaway Counties. I found tracks on most of these families in census records, except for "Noah Garren and wife." Do you know the name of the Copple sister who married Garren? Did they stay in the county? Are they buried in Andrew or Nodaway Counties, or did they move on to somewhere else? Thanks again, Monica

This lady was my great great grandmother, and died 4 Apr 1904.The obituary must have been printed within a few days of her death. DEATH OF A PIONEER SMITH --- At 3 o'clock p.m. Sunday, April 5th, there were interred in the Fairview cemetery, five miles north of Savannah, the mortal remains of one who for the last twenty years has held the distinction of being the oldest resident of Andrew County. In 1838 there emigrated from Indiana to the then far west, four young, married men, whose wives were sisters. The names of these men were Elijah M. Smith, Henry Foster, Ralph Dixon and Noah Garren. The maiden name of their wives was Copple. These four families, with three others, constituted at the time, the entire population of the territory that is now Andrew County. The hardships and deprivations that these sturdy pioneers underwent, we who are enjoying the fruit of their labors will never know. They secured, each, a tract of land --- that same land which today is ready sale at prices ranging all the way from $50 to $100 per acre --- this land they bought from the U. S. government, under the administration of James K. Polk. One by one, during the years that have come and gone, these persons relinquished their hold upon, not only their land, but upon all earthly things and passed into the presence of Him who created the land and all things. The last to pass away was Susannah, the wife of Elijah M. Smith; he having died Aug. 26, 1860. She was the mother of six boys and six girls. Those living are Joseph D., William, George, Mrs. J. C. Goforth, Mrs. Sanford Rhoades and Mrs. Thos Simpson, all of Nodaway County, Jno. C. who resides on the old homestead, five miles northwest of Savannah, and Mrs. Robert Hopecraft of Cumberland, Maryland. She had 58 grand children, 100 great grand children and 2 great great grand children. She was born in Indiana, January 15th, 1816. Obeyed the Gospel of Christ in 1849 or 1850, and lived a devoted Christian to the end. A large number of persons attended the funeral services, which were conducted by her pastor, Eld. W. A. Chapman, at the Fairview Church, of which she was a charter member, and from which she was only dismissed by death. Truly a mother in Israel has fallen asleep. --- "Asleep in Jesus; Blessed sleep! Form which one never wakes to weep." W.A.C. (Note: W.A.C. is William A. Chapman, the pastor) John Bennett jbennett1@prodigy.net http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bent http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~sllug

Carol, THANKS for reminding us of New Ark! I'd totally forgotten about that early name. Susannah White was definitely living in the Fillmore/ Jackson Twp. area, so I'll bet New Ark is the ticket! Thanks again, Monica
\ I am trying to locate anyone that knows anything about the whereabouts of Isabella Edna Farrell who married Ralph Edgar Scott in the early 1920's. Ralph Edgar died in 1922 and his widow with their young child reportedly relocated to the Chicago area. However, if there is any Farrell family in Andrew County that knows anything about Edna Farrell Scott or her daughter Letitia Estella Scott please contact me. I am working on a family genealogy any Estella is a cousin. I know that Edna and her daughter returned to the area in 1937 for the funeral of W.E. Scott (Edna's father-in-law). She was related in marriage to Edna Scott Ordnung and her daughter Emily Katherine Beattie who expired in 1985. Any help in locating this side of the family will be greatly appreciated.
Freeman, The word "Nodaway" might be the problem. I find John and Margaret Kelly on the Nodaway COUNTY census records of 1870 and 1880, and he is there (pre marriage) in 1860 as well. Too many places named Nodaway, including county, township and river. Monica

Susannah White is listed (in the Andrew Co. Hist. Soc.'s transcription) as being buried in Fillmore Cemetery, Jackson Twp., Andrew Co., MO. She died 6 Jul 1855. I'm baffled about "Newmark," however. Any chance that it's the words "her mark" after her "signature" (like an X)? Or maybe it was the name of her farm? Hope this helps. Monica
In her 1854 will, my great great great great grandmother, Suzanna White, signed her will as living in Newmark, Andrew Co., MO. Her witnesses (Z.F. Gilmore among them) also signed as living in Newmark, Andrew Co., MO. Could anyone help me locate that place? What cemetery would she likely be buried in? Thanks for your help! Joann, Riverside, CA

According to old notes in my grandmother's Bible her parents both died in Savannah Mo.and are buried there. They were Jackson Farley born about 1829 and died 1904. Looking for any connections to my KENNISON/KINNISON line. My ancestors: Davis b. abt 1804 and Mary (possibly TAYLOR) b. abt 1814 Their children were Sarah b. 1834, Ann 1837, Mary 1839, Caroline 1842, Alverda 1844 and William 1848. All were born in VA (now WV) except for Wm. born in MO. Based on daughter Alverda's obit and other data obtained to date, Davis and his family lived in Hampshire Co. VA (now WV) at least in the 1840's near Romney. About 1846 they and other families (names not known) sailed in Keel boats from Wheeling WV down the Ohio River and ended up in Andrew Co. by Dec 1846 when Davis witnessed a Will of Henry Vowell Copeland. Davis joined the Confederate Army and died sometime in the War from disease in Old Bolton or Old Boston, TX. After his death, the widow and young children moved to NE. Alverda Kennison married John Jay Hart and Caroline married Wm. R. Allen. I do not know who any of the other siblings married but sure would like to. Daughters Sarah, Ann and Mary likely married in Andrew Co. mid to late 1850's. Any clues appreciated. I am more than willing to share what data I have. Thanks, Pat Gilbert

There was also a similar book done in 1980. These were published by the Andrew County Museum and available from there: Andrew County Museum and Historical Society PO Box 12 Savannah, MO 64485 tel# (816) 324-4720 I don't have any connection to the museum other than visiting there myself. They do have a small genealogy library in the basement which has alot of original documents and old Savannah newspapers. It's open limited hours - but the librarian will come in at other times to assist folks. Jan
The book of Savannah Cemetery inscriptions is Volume 7, listed under "Andrew County Cemetery Inscriptions, Volumes 1 through 7" at the Andrew County Historical Society and Museum website. It was published in the 1970s (as I recall; don't quote me), but contains most tombstones before then. It does not include a transcription of the oldest section of the cemetery, however. I don't believe a transcription of "Section 1" exists in published form. You can see a picture of part of it at: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~vlwest/andrew-co/savannah.htm Monica
