John Gilson b. 1814 Ohio, was listed as a R/R Tie Maker in 1880 Morrow Twp. Adair County, MO. I know what R/R Ties are, but just how did one go about the business of making ties? Were they mass produced, how did they make the ties back in the late 1800's? Did they have contracts with the Railroads? Did they supply to specific Railroads? How were they paid?
