I have a question concerning the Riggins/Dixon families... they were in both Putnam & Adair counties, therefore I am posting to each list. James N. Riggins was born 1853 to James Riggins & Elizabeth "Betsy" Haynes. His father died before 1860 and his mother remarried I. John Scobee. It was a 2nd marriage for both. They had no children together. Other children of Betsy & James were Milton, Susan E., Mary Ann, David A., Hannah Jane, & Sarah Frances. I've been told that James N. (Nicholas - went by "Nick") married (who???) and had a son named John M. b 1824 who married Sarah "Sally" Davis - dau of Elijah Davis & Lucinda F. Haynes, (sister to Betsy) and had William G., Elijah D., Lucinda M., & Matilda J. Riggins. Now, I'm not really smart, but I don't believe for an instant that someone born in 1853 can have a son born 19 years earlier. It is said that this John M.'s son, William G. married Jane Boice, dau of John Harr Boice. Anyone have any information on this question??? Perhaps the dates are wrong. I haven't a census to look at. Was John M. actually an uncle to James N. rather than a son??? I also have an unknown son Riggins born either to Milton, David A. or James N. born abt 1875ish who married Etta Coghill. Their known children were Ethel May, alta E., Howard & Virgel Riggins. In the 1920 census of Richland Twp., Putnam Co., MO. this Etta is the head of family #42, age 42 and widowed. All 4 of these mentioned children are with her, ages ranging from 16-22. Were there more that were out of the house already? Who was this unnamed son? Family #80, same census, is Samuel Kenney, 39 with wife, Bertha Luellen, 28 and daughters, Nellie May, 10 & Edna Marie, 3. Family #87, same census, is Fountain Kenney, 74, and wife, Sarah Francis, 73. Sarah Frances was nee Riggins... a daughter of James Riggins & Betsy Haynes. I would have to assume that Samuel Kenney, 39 is their son... Anyone have any information they can add to this family? Bertha's maiden name, who the children married... other children, etc.? Anything would be most appreciated. Other surnames that these folks married into were Francis, Poole, Dixon... Joanne Scobee Morgan
