Here's an article I think people might enjoy reading: http://interactive.wsj.com/public/current/articles/SB992558970976621678.htm Plus, here's some interesting info I received from another list: The U.S. government, ever our benefactor, has decided to increase the cost of SS-5 (social security application)copy requests from $7 to $27, effective 1 July 2001. You can read about the increase at: http://genealogy.about.com/library/tips/bissrates.htm If you have SS-5 copies for your ancestors buried in your research, please get them out and transcribe the information for others via RootsWeb, following the instructions below. We will all be in your debt. 1. Go to: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi 2. Enter the name of the person who is on the form you have into the search engine. 4. When the right entry comes up, go over to the far right and click on "Add Post-Em" link. 5. The "Fill in the blank" form will come up and you can type in the information just like it's printed on the form you have in your hands! 6. Include all the information in the order that it is entered on the form, so that others have the advantage of all that information. NOTE: You don't have to type in the SS Number for the person as the Rootsweb program includes it. You can also find out how to protest the increase (or anything else you don't like about what they're doing) via your elected officials at: http://lcweb.loc.gov/global/legislative/congress.html A former Missouri State Rep on another mailing list suggests the following: 1.) DO NOT send e-mail (he never answered his as a State Rep) 2.) DO call your local officals' offices. 3.) DO follow up with by snail mail until you feel that someone is listening. I find it sad yet amusing that while the government is more than tripling the price of these copies, it has taken them this long to figure out how vast the family research community has become.
Adair List, I don't know why, but the look and way to get to the posting info and to post queries, etc. has all changes. *sigh* I will work on trying to make it easier for people to find, search and understand the change. We, county coordinators are not happy about this change, but it is out of our control. *sigh* Let's just hope we find that when we get use to the change it will be better than before. This is the way I got to the post area for Adair: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=Localities.United-20-Stat es.States.Missouri.Counties.Adair click on: Message Boards then: Localities then: North America then: United States then: States then: Missouri then: Counties then: Adair You will see listings of posts for Adair. You can search thru them, post a reply to one of them, or post a new one. It's a pain. *sigh* I still haven't figured out what rootsweb did to it. I'll be working on it. Best wishes, Claudia
Has anyone ever heard of an Osborne, MO? I find 3 only Osborn's in MO using USGS and none were towns. A bridge in Gentry Co.; School Historical in Lafayette Co.; and School Historical in Macon Co. No Collensville's come up at all. I have a copy of some papers signed around 1908 that states that daughters to Thomas Stoneking were living in Collensville, MO (Viola Mannagan) and Osborne, MO (Martha J. Courtney). it also list that one daughter Luella COURTNEY was living in Elmer, MO and the son was in Greencastle, Mo. Since the STONEKING's seem to be around the Adair Co area and the COURTNEY's in Adair and Macon Co. Thought I'd check and see if anyone had run across these towns. Thanks for your time and good luck on your searches! -- Jim LowAry LowAry Home Page: http://www.lowary.org/
