Leslie (Bridges) Kohler - List Admin of both of these lists ============================================ Dr. Eugene Dennis and Hazel Dennis were my step-father's grandparents. I have gleaned the following info from the online 1930 census of Rutledge, Scotland Co, MO; the Social Security Death Index; some family documents and information from my stepfather and my mother. I realize the SSDI is not valid documentation and the dates may be in error. Dr. Eugene Dennis, parents unknown, b. c.1901/02 in either OH or IL. Father's possible name was Lyman Dennis. Per 1930 census both parents b. in OH Hazel Dennis (maiden unknown and parents unknown), b. c. 1903/04 in MO. According to 1930 census father b. in MO; mother b. in "United States" (sic) Dr. Eugene Dennis was a doctor of osteopathy. He married Hazel c. 1922/23 prob. in Kirksville, Adair Co., MO. Their first child, daughter Gwendolyn Dorene Dennis (my step-father's mother), was born in Kirksville, Adair Co., MO (per my step-father's birth certificate) on January 17, 1924 (birthdate per SSDI) Their second child, son Melville E. Dennis, was born in MO on August 13, 1928 (birthdate per SSDI) On April 22, 1930 the family of four was enumerated in Rutledge, Scotland Co., MO., Eugene (age 28), Hazel (age 26), Gwendolyn (age 6) and Melville (age 1 6/12). Eugene's occupation is given as doctor of osteopathy (this is also per the family history). Eugene's age at first marriage was 20. Hazel's age was 19. According to my step-father, Hazel only had 2 children and died when they were quite young - apparently sometime in the 1930s. He also said that Eugene died sometime after my step-father was born (1945). I believe he said Eugene died in IL (probably DuPage County or Cook County). Gwendolyn and Melville both eventually moved to IL. Gwendolyn married Edwin Henry Tonne in IL and raised a family there. Gwendolyn died of cancer in IL in 1970. Melville died in DuPage Co., IL on December 22, 2000 (per SSDI). Any information or direction will be appreciated. Is Dr. Eugene Dennis mentioned in any biographies for Kirksville? In particular we would like to find out if Hazel Dennis died of cancer. Her daughter Gwen died of cancer and now one of my step-father's nephews has cancer. I figure if Dr. Dennis was a noted figure - there might have been mention of Hazel's death in a newspaper? Barry Jernigan Murfreesboro, TN
