Thank you, thank you, thank you. My great grandmother, LaFon Bourn Moss, married a Mears (2nd husband) sometime in the middle or late 1880s. She lived in Hartford. I never had a name for him beyond Mears but hoping that Reuben may be his father or another relative. (Family feud -- long story). There may have been a half-sister to my Grandmother -- Kate Moss -- also. I have not found any other records that match up and am unable to trace her death without Mr. Mears name. I believe they may have been in California and I vaguely recall having heard the name Reuben. So I am most delighted with your reply. Lafonne Jennings Taylor
I have his obituary and some military records and will e-mail them to you. Quentin Cabell Smith **************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides. (http://travel.aol.com/travel-guide/united-states?ncid=aoltrv00030000000016)
Is there somebody in the group who will do a lookup at Kirksville. I need a copy of an obituary for Reuben Mears, buried in Forest-Llewellyn cemetery. Died 1898. Veteran, Co. C, 4th PA cavalry. In "Find a Grave" the record was submitted by "Bev". I will pay whatever you need for the research. Thank you, Lafonne J. Taylor. [email protected]

Marie Reed and others, Re: The Local History Book: NOVINGER (ADAIR COUNTY), MISSOURI: The People, the Town and the Surrounding Communities contains That book is out of print and has been for several years. I was the committee chair for Novinger Renewal, Inc. (NRI) that researched, wrote and published the book in 2001. NRI will eventually reprint it and I am keeping a record of those who want to be notified when it is available in a few more years. Those who are interested in being notified when the reprinted book becomes available, please advise me by email on the following address: [email protected] To help finance the book, we accepted biographies from people who lived in the greater Novinger area. However, the book is a local history book with family biographies included - not a genealogy or family history book. It sold for $45 plus $5 shipping. However, we don't know what the price will be after reprinting. Book Description: This book entitled NOVINGER (ADAIR COUNTY), MISSOURI: The People, the Town and the Surrounding Communities contains 768 total pages including an in-depth history of: (1) Novinger, Missouri (120 pages); (2) Each of the other towns and place names located on, or west of, the Chariton River (103 pages); (3) The Quincy, Omaha & Kansas City Railroad (24 pages); (4) The Iowa and St. Louis Railroad (11 pages); (5) Coal Mining in Adair County; (6) Novinger area Organizations (64 pages) and (7) Businesses in Novinger, Missouri 1901-2001 (20 pages). In addition the book includes 270 pages of 134 biographies (95 different surnames) for those who live or once lived in western Adair County plus many of their descendants. The book also contains 670 historic and biographical photographs, a 76-page all-name index containing over 20,000 entries and 10,530 given names listed under 2,170 different surnames. The book has a hard cover, is 8 1/2 X 11 inches and is printed on acid free paper. It contains a map showing the name and location of every cemetery in Adair County, a photograph of each school building that was located in Adair County as of 1950 (about 70 of them) and maps showing the location of every major coal mine that ever existed in Adair County. By the way, both the 1979 and the 2001 centennial books are described in: http://homepage.mac.com/ggl1/index.html That site has several free genealogy databases and indexes for Adair and Putnam counties as well as descriptions of some family history books, some of which are still in print. James QUINSBERRY married them, according to the Marriage Register filed in Book I-W, page 202. Henry DAVIS and David B. YOUNG signed the bond.. Betsy MORTON writes a permission note for her daughter and calls Permelia/Pamella her daughter. A Polly MORTON attests to this. A Robert D. HART also signs. In Clark County Marriage Book I-W, page 149 Robert ADAMS and Sarah MORTON are shown married on 26 March 1817. Their bond is posted by Robert ADAMS and Samuel MORTON. E. KINARD(?) is shown to have married them. In Clark County Marriage Book I-W, page 176, Talton(Tarleton) FIELDER and Elizabeth MORTON are shown to be married on 29 March 1820 by James QUINSBERRY. 1 March 1822 Clark County, Kentucky Deeds, Deed Book 18, page 318, on 1 March 1822 Elizabeth MORTON purchased five acres of land in Clark County, Kentucky from John STRODE and his wife, Ruth. Probate Documents, Clark County, Kentucky, Probate Inventory 5 December 1833; Estate Settlement 22 September 1834. The Probate Inventory of Elizabeth MORTON was signed December 5, 1833; taken before the Clark County April Court 1834 and approved then. An Indentures was signed December 3, 1833, conveying Elizabeth MORTON's land to James STRODE. This Indenture was signed by the following: Robert ADAMS and Sally ADAMS of the County of Estill, KY; Tarlton FIELDER and Elizabeth FIELDER of the County of Estill, KY; Mariah MORTON of Clark County and Matilda MORTON of Clark County. Recorded in Deed Book 26, page 226, Clark County, Kentucky. On August 11, 1842, Henry DAVIS and Permelia DAVIS of the County of Adair, State of Missouri, signed an Indenture conveying their interest in Elizabeth MORTON's land to James Strode, recorded in Book 30, page 455. I was able to find a death record from "Kentucky Death Records, 1852-1953" that lists the parents of Elizabeth MORTON FIELDER as Archy MORTON and Elizabeth MORTON. (Internet sites list this Elizabeth's maiden name as WOODALL.) Elizabeth MORTON FIELDER died on 27 December 1878 in Estill County, Kentucky. She was born circa 1799 in Clark County, Kentucky, all according to this record. So, what I do know: Permelia Andrew MORTON was also the daughter of Archy (ARCHIBALD?) MORTON and Elizabeth (Betsy MORTON) and she apparently had these sisters: Sally (Robert) MORTON ADAMS; Elizabeth (Tarleton) MORTON FIELDER; Mariah MORTON and Matilda MORTON. Does anyone know with certainty the parents of Archibald MORTON or his wife, Elizabeth? Samuel MORTON is shown on some Internet records but no source is listed for this. THANKS!!! Judy, The Lady that wrote the book has died. She and her sisters were friends of my Mom and Aunt. She was very inclusive about the families she wrote about. Just about all of them were like her and stayed in Novenger. All the young people who left during World War 11, were left out. Young people who left to seek a much better life. My Mom ask my Dad after WW11 if he wanted to go back to Novenger and he said that the only thing he left there was Hard times and cold winters. My families were the Stevens-Paytons-Stivers-Bishoffs-Springgate. My Grandparents and G-Grandparents are buried there in Sloans Point Cemetary. Bruce Stevens PS: The rest are buried in Bear Creek Cemetary, Kirksville. --- Judy Henderson <[email protected]> wrote: > Bruce: > > I agree with you. Bruce: I agree with you. I looked this information up on their website a few years back and noted that there was no mention of several of the families including mine: Whitney, Sanders, Elsea and Hatfield. Hopefully, they will put out a newer version and broadcast for information prior to publication. Might try the Coalminers Historical people in Novenger. The book is informing, but not very well researched on the people it mentions. Leaves many well known and pioneer families not mentioned. Many of whm still have decendants living there. --- Dottie <[email protected]> wrote: > I would love to have a copy too. > > Dottie > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Marie Reed" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Monday, January 14, 2008 12:31 AM > Subject: [MOADAIR] The 2001 Novinger Centennial Book > > > > Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of: > > Novinger (Adair County), Missouri: > > The People, the Town and the Surrounding > Communities > > "The 2001 Novinger Centennial Book" > > > > > > Kindness is a language the deaf can hear & the > blind can see....Mark Twain > > > > > > --------------------------------- > > Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all > with Yahoo! Try the Adair County Historical Society at 211 South Elson, Kirksville, Mo 63501-3466 or at 660-665-6502. I just happened to have the address on my desk tonight. They are very friendly and if they do not have the book will know where to find it. Dottie <[email protected]> wrote: I would love to have a copy too.
