That is a very old habit in my husband's family . They sign every building they work on so does my son. Usually It is at the chimney as it is a superstition for good luck, besides they are known for their fireplaces. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 6:09 PM To: [email protected] Subject: MOADAIR Digest, Vol 2, Issue 22 Today's Topics: 1. I live in Carthage MO and while remodeling our old house found "Thomas Sees" written in an older looking script on the back of a trim board. Recently I found out that the person who probably lived in our house first was Andrew Biffer, who had lived in Kirksville before he moved here. I suspect that Thomas Sees of Adair County was the builder but would like to prove it, or at least find out if he had built other houses. The two census records I find him in say he was a carpenter, and a contractor so it seems likely. Thanks for more clues. Thanks for the information on the Sees family. MANY thanks, Elizabeth; you've solved the mystery of my grand aunt-by-marriage. I'm handicapped in the research department: (a) by sloth and mental deficiency; (b) by not being an Ancestry.com member; and (c) by laziness about boarding Metro for the short ride to Archives in DC! HeritageQuest (which I use online via my local library) has significant shortcomings, i.e., asking for all Nancy C. Thompson census entries, the Dade entry you highlighted didn't come up; and yet Moses' entry does (I didn't have her father's name beforehand). I had a similar experience at Archives last week where they now start you out on your research there with one of the online genealogy programs (can't remember which one, but I don't think it is Ancestry.com). It would not show an entry I already had found at Archives some years ago. Not trusting my own fallible records, I went back to the microfilm library and sure enough, I found the entry. I pointed out to the staff there how misleading these programs can be, my unspoken message being that Archives, of all entities, should not be promoting a less-than-accurate program--they agreed that the microfilms are the most reliable source. Such events discourage less than professional researchers who put their trust in much-touted programs (by their operators.) Again, I'm grateful to you for filling in the blank in my pedigree! Best luck to you. Quentin In a message dated 6/22/2008 9:09:08 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: As a follow-up, this family is found in Kirksville on the 1880 census. Ok. In that case, I think your Nancy is the daughter of Moses L.Thompson. See the 1860 census in Dade County, Missouri. Moses Thompson, born in Tennessee, wife Susan, born Missouri, are the parents of Maryann L., age 3, and Nancy C. age 3/12, which would make her born in March of 1860 as your Pueblo, Colorado census indicates. Sorry that I don't have any McClelland or Snell information, or recall of an epidemic in Adair Co in the early 1880's. As to William & Sarah (Patterson) Thompson, my grand uncle, William Oscar Patterson, married Nancy Thompson ca 1880 in Kirksville. This may just be a coincidence of names; I don't know of Sarah Patterson or Nancy's parents or siblings. Quentin Cabell Smith In a message dated 6/21/2008 10:43:32 P.M. Quentin, I think it is just a coincidence. My Thompson/Patterson marriage was in Pennsylvania in 1779. Their eldest son, Andrew, is my Sullivan County link. I do have a Nancy Thompson in Sullivan County, but I don't see that she links to you. There were other Thompson families in Sullivan County - a thorough look at census records will help to sort them out. I see that there is a Nancy, daughter of Simeon and Mary, who was born in Missouri in 1863, living in Buchanan Twp in 1870. She may be a likely candidate for the marriage to William Oscar Patterson. A marriage record exists for the marriage of Belle McClelland to Isaiah W. Snell in 1873. On the 1880 census Isabel McClelland is living in the household of her parents John & Elizabeth McClelland. Also in this household is 6-year old Charles Snell. I have been unable to locate a census record for Isaiah. However, in Grundy County in January 1882, there is a marriage record of Isaiah to Hattie J. Merryman. It would appear that Belle/Isabel died prior to that date, but what happened to Charles? I am unable to identify Charles on the 1900 census, so perhaps he died also. Is there a record of typhoid, cholera, or some such widespread disease in Adair County in the period 1880/1881?
