I am trying to find information on Susanna Martha Rose. She was the daughter of Benjamin Rose and Sarah Ann Holman. Susanna was married three times. The last marriage was to a Henry Sipes. I believe they were in Adair Co, Mo when she died but it is possible that it was Grundy Co, or Putnam Co. There is a "family story" that she took her children to see a hanging in town, where she collapsed at the sight and died several days later. I do not know if there is any truth to this. I do know that when my grandmother was getting married in 1889, Henry Sipes signed as her guardian. Any help would be appreciated. David Kimble settled in the Scotland/Adair County area in 1841, with his parents Aaron Kimble and Nancy Snodgrass Kimble, when he was 13. . In 1857, he bought land in Morrow township. He owned over 300 acres. He married Rebecca Wortman, a widow with two girls, and had four children with her. In 1862, something happened which broke the family up. The family legend is that David deserted both sides in the Civil War. His son John remembered his father hiding under a house and hiding his guns in a tree stump so the armies could not take them. David hid at a neighbors house, (the Bozarths) and while there, fell in love with the neighbor's daughter, Minerva Jane. She became pregnant and they left the area. David's wife Rebecca had their youngest son, Dave, about this time. David and Minerva went to Indiana and Illinois, and then out to Washington in 1869. Rebecca stayed in the area, and John Kimble, (son of David and my great grandfather), lived in the area with his family until about 1900. They moved to Lucas County, Ohio. Some of John's children moved out to Skagit County, Washington, where their grandfather settled. What does not sound right about David deserting is that he became one of the first settlers in Mt. Vernon Washington, and was noted for his upstanding citizenship, pioneer spirit and courage. David mentions the War in the letter below, and states how persecution drove him from his home. I would dearly love to know what really happened. Judith Oldham Mt. Vernon, Washington December 15, 1906 Well, Dear Grandson; I will try to answer your kind request. I was born in Fayette County, Ohio, May 5, in the year 1828. My family moved to Indiana when I was five years old, and lived there until I was in my 13th year. Then we went to Missouri when that was a wilderness. I lived there until the War. Then persecution drove me from home, and I became a rambler. I went from place to place. Finally I went to Indiana. There I met and married Minerva Jan Bozarth who has shared my hardship for nearly 40 years. We left Illinois in 1869, and came to Washington, and settled on the place where we now live. We settled here when there were only 16 (settlers), including me, in the county, and narry a white woman. We were surrounded by all sorts and sizes. I was a sample William Penn. I made my friends and I never had any trouble. We had hard times, and ups and downs, (but) we have always worked hard and pulled together. We have never had a quarrel in all these 45 years. We have a good home and are enjoying life as well as two old folks can. We are both enjoying good health. Now, for my father. He was born in New Jersey in 1803, and went to Pennsylvania, and from there to Ohio, where I was born. He was loaned out to learn a trade. He served his time. He was a Brick and Stone Mason. He died in Missouri in 1845. He had two brothers, Moses and Nathan. One was a Tanner, and the other was a Hatter. My grandmother on my father's side was a niece of Martha Washington. She was a ROSE. Your Aunt Polly Snodgrass was a Kimble, and she named her first girl after my grandmother, and the name has come down to the fifth generation. My mother's side are of German descent. My mother was born in Virginia in 1812. Her maiden name was Snodgrass. She was the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Snodgrass. My grandmother's maiden name (on mother's side) was O'Neal. My aunts on mother's side went from Ohio to Kokomo, Indiana. One of them married James Will, one married a Pogue Pitzer, and the other married Henry Pitzer. This leaves all well...hoping this will find you all the same. Please excuse me for not answering your first letter, as you did not give me your address. As I wrote all I can think of, I will close. Hoping to hear from you soon. From; D.E. Kimble to George Kimble

Hi! I would be glad to help search the census for you and the Adair website also has quite a number of the census years online. I frequently go to our National Archives which has all of the census records on film and can easlily get copies for you if you'd like. Also....my family in Adair Co. was froj Lincolnshire! George Thorpe and Sarah Hare married in Cunningsby, Lincolnshire on Nov. 30., 1813. They sailed from Liverpool on March 30th 1830 arrived in New Orleans in July. They moved around for a while and then settled in Adair Co. MO by 1840. George (b.1791) was the son of George and Elizabeth Thorpe and Sarah (b.1794) was the daughter of Charles and Sarah Hare. This information was collected by my father-in-law and I have no documentation for it and haven't yet learned how to search the English records. We may even be related!! Hopefully we can at least help each other! Let me know. Have a wonderful day....Janet
Dear Adair County listers; I research the name RUSSELL in Lincolnshire, England. I have just joined this list in the hope that someone out there might perhaps be able to help me in my search for an elusive ancestor. He was my grandfather's uncle. His name was COLTON FILLINGHAM RUSSELL. born 1858 in Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire ,England. He emigrated to the U.S. - probably around 1879 as a young man In 1884 he married ELLA HARRIS by license at the home of the bride's parents in Kirksville. He gave his age as 25. She was said to be 21. He didn't use his middle name and said he was from St.Louis. Some years ago (before computers!) we did manage to get the following census information; City of St Louis1900 NAME RELATION COLOR SEX DATE OF BIRTH AGE MARRIED Russell Colton Head w f June 1864 35 m (20 years) Russell Amy daughter w f May 1885 15 s CHILDREN LIVING CH: BIRTHPLACE FATHER'S B:PLACE MOTHER'S B.PLACE 1 1 Illinois N.York N.Jersey Missouri England England (??) There were also 5 boarders, a cook and a niece Minnie Stoop/ Stroop? in the house. I have always assumed that this is Mrs Colton Russell ie Ella Harris and daughter. Family legend has it that Colton had one child who was in poor health, that both wife and child predeceased him and that he had a boarding house "somewhere in America" !! This is all the information I have on him and would dearly love to find out more - especially when and where he died. I wonder if there are any Russell or Harris researchers among you who may have come across this family and could tell me more about either Colton or Ella Harris. Are there any other families in this area with roots in Lincolnshire, England? I would like to know why Colton settled in Missouri; is this an agricultural area? (He came from a long line of yeoman farmers.) I would be very grateful for any information or advice on how to proceed further. I know very little about researching in the U.S. Are there any online Missouri burial indexes I could search, for example? Thanks for your time. Margaret Russell Glover
The transcriptions for Benton and Morrow townships from the 1860 Census are now complete and have been posted at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~moadair/census-Adair.htm If you find anything that you think has been transcribed incorrectly, please let me know. I have not proofread them, and some names were hard to read, so there could be some mistakes. Michele Cragg
Hi, Sandy. I was one of the "census" takers for the 1973 City Directory. I'm not sure as to whether my husband's KOHLER family was in Kirksville in 1914 or not. I do know that his father, Ordell Henry KOHLER (who was b Ordell Henry KOEHLER), was living there in 1918. Will you please see what the book shows about any KOEHLERs or KOHLERs living there in 1914. Thanks. The complete 1860 Census for the City of Kirksville has now been posted on the Adair County page at the following address. http://www.rootsweb.com/~moadair/1860Kirksville.PDF If you would like to contribute your entries for any of the census years/townships that have not yet been transcribed, please send whatever entries you have to me at [email protected] Our goal is to try and get the rest of the census records transcribed as soon as possible, and with your help, we will be able to do so more quickly. Even if you don't know the page number, or haven't copied down all of the information, please send me what you do have (names, ages, birthplaces, etc), and I will be able to find what page they go on from the census index and fill in the rest of the information from the census. If you have any questions or comments about this project, please let me know. Michele Cragg
