    1. Kentucky to Missouri
    2. Seems like a lot of families moved from Kentucky to Missouri. Is there anyone on the list who is familiar with the migration patterns of the 1800's that can explain this? I suspect that as the govt. opened up more land for settlement, people were eager to move and get cheaper land. If there is a book someone could recommend I would love to have the title. 3. Looking for any info on Robert MILLER who married Sally C. Ferguson 4/1/1816 in Hardin Co., Ky. In 1845 I found a Hardin Co. deed reference to Robert & Sarah as living in Adair Co., Mo. at that time. The deed was granting John F. Miller also of Adair Co. right in estate of John Ferguson (apparantly Sally's father). I am tryng to determine if this Robert Miller could have been son of my David Miller of Washington Co., Ky. Any input on these Millers would be appreciated. Art Miller, Louisville

SYMPTOMS: Continual complaint as to need for names, dates, and places. Patient has a black expression, sometimes deaf to spouse and children. Has no taste for work of any kind, except feverishly looking through records at libraries and courthouses. Has compulsion to write letters. Swears at mailman when he doesn't leave mail. Frequents places such as cemeteries; ruins; and remote, desolate country areas. Makes secret night calls, hides phone bills from spouse, and mumbles to self. Has a strange, faraway look in eyes. NO KNOWN CURE. TREATMENT: Medication is useless. Disease is not fatal, but gets progressively worse. Patient should attend genealogy workshops, subscribe to genealogical magazines, and be given a quiet corner in the house where he or she can be alone. 1. Darnel CAMPBELL
    2. To Colleen Campbell Taylor: I have a copy of of a book published by the city of Kirksville which contains the records of the burials in the Forest and Llewllyn Cemeteries. It lists 20 people with the name of Campbell being burried there. There are no listings of anyone named Darnel Campbell but there is one listing in Section A of Llewellyn that has a last name only of Campbell (with no first name) burried on Lot Al6. The address I have for this information a few years ago was as follows: City of Kirksville 201 S. Franklin Kirksville, Missouri 63501 Hope this helps you a little. Eleanor Overstreet

    1. Adeline Bruce
    2. Is someone available to do a census lookup? I need information on Adeline/Adaline Bruce who was in Adair Co., MO, in 1903 and maybe earlier. She was a widow and probably had at least one child named Adeline in her household. She may also have had children Cenia, Sally, Willie, Lillie, and Cleva. Adeline Perry married Smith Lee Bruce in Sumner Co., TN, on 12 Apr 1880, and at some time following his death on 26 Mar 1892, she moved to Adair Co., MO. Any help in locating this family would be greatly appreciated. Joyce

    3. I am forwarding this information kindly transcribed and sent to me by Tilly Lay. If someone is on the Sullivan County list, you might want to forward it. When I receive her photo, I will scan it and submit it to the photo page. Judith Oldham -------- Original Message -------- From: Otilya Lay <[email protected]> Subject: Wortman/Kimble To: [email protected] Hi, I have run off a genealogy report on the Wortmans which I have in my files. I'll get them in Monday's mail. I will also enclude the picture which I would like you to put on your site for unidentified pictures. Thank you very much. You do not have to return the picture. Page 776: (I am including this because it looks like the Caldwells are related to each other) Robert A. Caldwell was born in Ireland in 1828, and is a son of Robert and Mary (Wisely) Caldwell, also natives of Ireland. His grandfather, Robert Caldwell, was a Scotchman, but reared his family in the northern part of Ireland. In 1848 Robet A. immigrated to the United States with his parents, landing in Philadelphia, May 11 of that year. He located in and raisde in Carbon County, Penn., until 1853, and in the fall of that year purchased a slightly improved farm in Sullivan Co, Mo., where he has since resided, and which by hard manual labor he has improved, and of which he has made a nice farm. He has since purchased more land, and now owns 380 acres, 240 being in the home place. One hundred acres are prairie land, and forth good timber land. He is a hospitable gentleman, and lives in a comfortable house, surrounded with good outbuildings. During the war he was a member of the State Militia, and helped defend the homes of his county against the invasions and attacks of the bushwhackers who thronged the vicinity. He has raised a fmily of seven children, and lost fiev in infancy. Those living are: Robert (married and at home), William (married and at home), Mary J. (wife of Mathew McCracken), Martha (wife of Joseph Kimble), Ellen, Josephine and Margaret Ann. Mrs Caldwell is a native of Ireland, and was married to our subject while he lived in Carbon County, Penn., on September 14, 1854. Her maiden name was Margaret Ann Moody. Mr and Mrs. Caldwell and four of the family are members of the Presbyterian Church. The parents of Mr. Caldwell died in Sullivan County. Page 777: John Caldwell was born in Ireland in May, 1843, and is a son of Robert and Mary Caldwell (see preceding sketch). He accompanied his parents to the United States, living for a time in Carbon County, Penn., and then removed to Sullivan County, Mo., in the fall of 1853. Here he grew to manhood, and in December, 1869, was married to Miss Josephine Dearing, a native of Sullivan County, who died in 1877. This union was blessed with three children: Margaret, James A., and John W. In the fall of 1877, Mr Caldwell was united in marriage to Miss Catherine McClaskey, daughter of James McClaskey, of Sullivan County, by whom he has had two children, Mary E. and Arthur. Mr. Caldwell is a stanch Republican, but has never sought nor held office. He has been a resident of Sullivan County since first coming heer, and now lives upon the old home place, to which he has added 400 acres of fenced land and 160 acres of meadow land. He is one of the respected and prosperous farmers of the township. Hope you can find a connection in these. Tilly Lay

Their children are: Joseph S. married Stella Cheney, Samuel W. never married, Ollie D. married George Prewitt, Ella M., Hattie L. married Albert Grassle (whose family, I believe, managed the Highland Park Cemetery for many years.) 2. Oscar Hoffmeyer
    3. An ancestor was listed as living in Kirksville when his father died in 1896 in Illinois. I would like to obtain data on him and his family if it is available from a city directory, the 1900 census (which is not available to me here) or other sources. He was John Wesley RICKART. His wife's name was Florence. They had a son Albert and in records located in Bremerton, WA it noted a granddaughter was born in Missouri, perhaps Kirksville. The family apparently left Kirksville sometime about 1903 when they were listed at Vashon Island, WA and later in 1913 moved to Bremerton. He died in Bremerton in December 1929. I will appreciate any effort made for a lookup, or for directions where I may find information on the family. Thank You Oscar Texas

    1. Kirksville Tornado, April 27, 1899
    2. I found these articles in two Kansas newspapers. You will notice discrepancies in the two lists of dead. There was also a third article with details about the injuries and deaths. (submitted by Paulette Haynes) The Rooks County Journal, May 4, 1899 KIRKSVILLE IN RUINS. Many Lives Lost Newton, Missouri also Torn In Pieces and Fifteen Persons Killed. A gathering storm that had been threatening all afternoon broke upon Kirksville, Mo., in all the fury of a cyclone. A path a quarter of a mile wide and as clean as the prairie was swept thru the eastern portion of the city and four hundred buildings, homes and mercantile houses, were leveled to the ground in scattered ruins. The list of killed so far as known are as follows: William B. Howells, student American School of Osteopathy. Mrs. W. H. Sherburn, wife of student School Osteopathy. Jas. Weaver, Sr., retired contractor Theodore Brigham, merchant Ed. Beeman, boy. Mrs. W. W. Green and daughter, Miss Bessie. Mrs. Henry Billington Mr. A. W. Galsee Mrs. A. W. Galsee Mrs. Ben Green Mrs. John Larkin Sr. Mr. C. A. Gibbs Mrs. C. A. Gibbs A. C. Beal James Cunningham Mrs. Mitchell Mrs. T. Mahaffey Mrs. C. Woods Mr. A. Little Mrs. A. Little Mr. Joe Woods Mrs. Joe Woods Mr. A. W. Rainschott Mrs. A. W. Rainschott A large number were injured. Intense darkness prevailed after the cyclone and the rescuers were at a disadvantage for a short time until fire broke out in a dozen places in the ruins and shed light over the scene. No attempts were made to extinguish the fires, partly because the rescuers had no time and partly because of the need of light. On both sides of the storm's path the debris was piled high and burned fiercely. In all probability a number of bodies have been cremated. The storm first struck the eastern portion of the city, near that part occupied by the boarding house of the students of the American School of Osteopathy, the State Normal school and McWard's seminary. It was just supper time for the students, and it is thought very probable the list of dead will be well filed with students, as a large number of these boarding houses were demolished. As far as known tonight these three institutions of learning escaped the storm. The storm then went northwest and wiped out Patterson's nursery, pulling the trees out of the ground and hurling them through the city. A second edition of the cyclone followed the first, twenty minutes later. It came as an inky black cloud, widely distributed, and covered the whole town, but passed above the houses doing no material damage and gathering fury as it went. It undoubtedly struck the ground a few miles out of Kirksville. The Logan Republic (Phillips County KS) Thursday, May 4, 1899 THIRTY-ONE ARE DEAD Awful Havoc at Kirksville, Mo., by a Tornado Ninety-four Badly Injured Kirksville, Mo., May 1 - The corrected list of those killed in the tornado of Thursday night places the number officially at 31. The list follows: Theo Brigham, a retired merchant Mrs. A. R. Bowman Son and daughter of Rev. Mr. Albert Burr Bab Billington Seth Feathers, 8 year old boy A. J. Glasee and wife. Mrs. W. W. Green Miss Bessie Green W. B. Howells, student of osteopathy Three children of Henry Lowe. J. B. K. Sherburne John C. Weaver Miss Leona Whaley Mrs. Joe Wood Miss Wood The number of injured now reaches ninety-four, and some of them are so badly injured that they will in all probability die. The search among the ruins still continues. Those known to be missing are: J. F. Ashworth John Elliott Mrs. John Johnson ---- Johnson Mayor Noonan has made a list of 100 families, including about 500 persons, who have lost everything and are in need. All the hungry have been fed through the efforts of the citizens, who are co-operating with Mayor Noonan. The annual encampment of the G.A.R. of Missouri is scheduled to meet in Kirksville May 10 for a two days convention. This will be declared off.
