A while back I posted a message that I am willing to host a char room for Adair county researchers to gather and share information and ask questions. I did initially get a good response and several people contacted me saying they would be interested. But since that time I sent out information to get things set up and operating and only a couple of people followed through. The room is there and can be used at any time by anyone who would like to do so, but until there is more response I will not set any scheduled times for chats. Maybe going into summer is just too much of a busy time for people....: ) Meanwhile our Michael Pierson descendants room is going and growing. So if we get enough people registered for Adair county chat in the future I'll set up a time and let you know, but for now we're on hold. sincerely, Cheryl
Am seeking an obit for the following: Frances Hazel Bradford b. 7/3/1928 d.2/6/1989 in Kirksville, Mo. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you so very much, Evelyn in Oregon
I have a question concerning the Riggins/Dixon families... they were in both Putnam & Adair counties, therefore I am posting to each list. James N. Riggins was born 1853 to James Riggins & Elizabeth "Betsy" Haynes. His father died before 1860 and his mother remarried I. John Scobee. It was a 2nd marriage for both. They had no children together. Other children of Betsy & James were Milton, Susan E., Mary Ann, David A., Hannah Jane, & Sarah Frances. I've been told that James N. (Nicholas - went by "Nick") married (who???) and had a son named John M. b 1824 who married Sarah "Sally" Davis - dau of Elijah Davis & Lucinda F. Haynes, (sister to Betsy) and had William G., Elijah D., Lucinda M., & Matilda J. Riggins. Now, I'm not really smart, but I don't believe for an instant that someone born in 1853 can have a son born 19 years earlier. It is said that this John M.'s son, William G. married Jane Boice, dau of John Harr Boice. Anyone have any information on this question??? Perhaps the dates are wrong. I haven't a census to look at. Was John M. actually an uncle to James N. rather than a son??? I also have an unknown son Riggins born either to Milton, David A. or James N. born abt 1875ish who married Etta Coghill. Their known children were Ethel May, alta E., Howard & Virgel Riggins. In the 1920 census of Richland Twp., Putnam Co., MO. this Etta is the head of family #42, age 42 and widowed. All 4 of these mentioned children are with her, ages ranging from 16-22. Were there more that were out of the house already? Who was this unnamed son? Family #80, same census, is Samuel Kenney, 39 with wife, Bertha Luellen, 28 and daughters, Nellie May, 10 & Edna Marie, 3. Family #87, same census, is Fountain Kenney, 74, and wife, Sarah Francis, 73. Sarah Frances was nee Riggins... a daughter of James Riggins & Betsy Haynes. I would have to assume that Samuel Kenney, 39 is their son... Anyone have any information they can add to this family? Bertha's maiden name, who the children married... other children, etc.? Anything would be most appreciated. Other surnames that these folks married into were Francis, Poole, Dixon... Joanne Scobee Morgan

In a message dated 04/24/2001 9:08:18 AM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > Well, someone out there is alive and kicking. And I'll try to kick-start something by posting a query. Some time between about 1898 and 1904, Adeline Bruce, widow of Smith Lee Bruce of Sumner Co., TN, moved to Missouri. In May, 1903, she signed a deed in Kirkville, Adair County, selling property in Tennessee that she had inherited. Adeline Perry Bruce and Smith Lee Bruce had at least one unnamed child in 1880, and it is believed that several more children were born to them prior to his death in March 1892. Other deeds mention the following women and their husbands but don't specifically state their relationship: Cenia DeLay and husband Edward DeLay signed in Douglas Co., WI. Sallie Bruce signed in Adair Co., MO. She signed again as Sallie Valentine with husband H. E. Valentine in Montgomery Co., Kansas. It isn't known where this marriage took place. Willie Bruce signed in Adair Co., MO. Cleva Bruce signed first in Douglas Co., WI, but signed another deed as Clevie Hicks with husband H. C. Hicks in El Reno, OK. Lillie Bruce was in Cole Co., OK. Bessie Bruce was in Colgate, Indian Terr. These signatures were witnessed by a JP in Kirkville but it isn't known if Adeline lived in Kirkville or one of the surrounding counties. If these women were the daughters of Smith Lee and Adeline Perry Bruce, they were so young when their father died that they would be expected to be with Adeline when she first arrived in Adair Co., MO. If they can be found in the 1900 or 1910 census for Adair or a neighboring county or in a marriage index, or in any document, I would be so grateful. Thanks for your help. Joyce
I am no longer receiving mails from this list. Is there a problem?? Margaret Glover
Well, someone out there is alive and kicking. <grin> Margaret, I guess I am not the only one who has been really busy with life lately. The list has just been absent of traffic. That is not unusual this time of year, what with spring 'springing' its beauty. Leslie (Bridges) Kohler - List Founder & Coordinator
Hello fellow listers, I am willing to host a chat room for discussions concerning Adair county history and genealogy. I have done this already with one particular line in my family tree and it is getting a good response. Those interested would probably meet once a week in a password protected channel. I know that many are leery of chat rooms on the internet and with good cause; however, I have set things up so that we all will be protected from any of the foolishness that can happen. Everyone would be required to register and choose their own password to keep anyone else from logging on under their user name. The channel then would be password protected with a password of my choosing that would only be given to those interested in Adair county for genealogical purposes. I run the server and it is going 24 hours, 7 days a week so it can be used by any registered users, whether I am able to be there or not. It is a very simple program to use and the software is free to download. Even though my roots are in Adair county, I live in Oregon which seems like on the other side of the world at times. It would be wonderful to have some of you who seems to have tons of knowledge host some of the discussions and if you are interested in that aspect please let me know. Of course any suggestions that anyone has will be welcome. E-mail me privately if you are interested at: [email protected] or [email protected] sincerely, Cheryl Pierson-Dau

Going through some old notes, I found the following about a murder trial in Brashear, Adair County, that I thought someone might be interested in. Kirksville Weekly Graphic, February 6, 1903 - The Robertson Trial Murder of George Conkle of Brashear Prosecuting attorney: John M. Robertson accompanied his wife, daughter of Conkle, from Kirksville to Brashear; went to Brashear Bank and asked if George Conkle's name on a note for $150 would be good; was told it was; asked cashier to fill it out; Robertson took note for Conkle to sign; left bank and went to Thrasher's store; went to door and called Conkle out; all three walked north to Northwest corner of square; Robertson asked Conkle to sign note; Conkle refused and Robertson shot him Robertson's testimony: said Conkle drew a knife and made toward him; he drew revolver but had no recollection of shooting him; denied he went to Brashear to kill Conkle Verdict of murder in the 1st degree; motion for new trial overruled; appeal to supreme court Violette's History of Adair County, page 499, says of George Conkle: "He was killed November 13, 1902, on the streets of Brashear, by his son-in-law, Mr. Robertson, who was afterwards executed for the deed". List try a site at Roots web www.rootsweb.com/~AdairCemtMap.htm It has a map of Adair co. with the Cem's places on it. My map shows Greentop on the Adair & Schuyler County line There is a bit of the town over the county line in Adair Co. but most is in Schuyler Co. The map does not show any Cem. as Greentop in Adair so I bet it is in Schuyler Co. Cheryl in Idaho Postalmom
I'm confused. When I look at my geographical server... http://www.mit.edu/geo?location=greentop%2C+MO it says that greentop is in Adair Co., then it says it's in Schuyler Co. Was Schuyler once Adair, or vice versa? Or is Greentop right on the county line and actually in both counties? Anyone know? Joanne Scobee Morgan
Guess you Trich's didn't go to Nebraska afterall... Higbee News Friday, 14 Nov 1913--TRITCH LOSES CLAIM--North Platte, Neb. Nov 10--Marvin Tritch of Kirksville, Mo, and Arthur Stromberg of Stromberg, Neb, winners respectively of Nos. 1 and 2 in the North Platte forest reserve government land lottery two weeks ago, have both been disqualified from benefiting by their luck in the drawings, and C. S. Reynolds of Loup city, Neb. who drew No. 3, has been ordered to report and make the first selection. All other winners will move up two notches. Tritch was found to have exercised already his homestead rights, and Stromberg was the owner of more than 160 acres of land when he filed. Friday, 14 Nov 1913--Moberly, Mo, November 12--Marvin Tritch, who drew first prize in the recent Nebraska land drawing, arrived in Moberly from North Platte, Neb, last night. His attention was called to the announcement from North Platte to the effect that he had been disqualified because he had previously exercised his homestead rights. Tritch said the report was a mistake. "I never registered for a piece of government land before," said Mr. Tritch. "Neither do I own a foot of ground anywhere. My father proved up a claim in Idaho recently, but that cannot effect my rights to enter the drawing. I am of the opinion that in looking over the records they saw my father's name and jumped at the conclusion that I was the same person. At any rate, no word has been received by me to the effect that my right to participate in the drawing has been canceled by the Federal Land Office.
