    2. Jim, There is a small town outside of Kirksville (don't know how many miles) that is called Connelsville on the other side of Novinger on Rt. 149. Don't know if this is the one you were thinking of or not. Osborn is around Cameron in Clinton County. Bobbie

    3. There are Osbornes in Butler & Clinton Counties, and an Osborn Crossing in Douglas Co., MO. I know I've been through Osborn on my way to adair Co., but I can't recall how it's spelled. Perhaps it's one of the above counties. Haven't heard of Collensville... perhaps it's just too small. 3. Has anyone ever heard of an Osborne, MO? I find 3 only Osborn's in MO using USGS and none were towns. A bridge in Gentry Co.; School Historical in Lafayette Co.; and School Historical in Macon Co. No Collensville's come up at all. I have a copy of some papers signed around 1908 that states that daughters to Thomas Stoneking were living in Collensville, MO (Viola Mannagan) and Osborne, MO (Martha J. 1. Unmarked Graves????
    2. sallyrally
    3. Dear Listers, Several years ago I was told by an elderly cousin that our Great Grandparents were buried in the Bethel Cemetery near Sperry, Missouri. I have searched the names of persons buried in that cemetery on the Adair Co. site. My Great Grandparent's names are not listed. Is it possible they are buried in an unmarked grave in that cemetery? Are there Cemetery Sexton records of burials for Bethel Cemetery? Was a burial permit required , and if so do those records exist? Is it possible there are deeds to cemetery plots recorded somewhere? The names of my Great Grandparents were William STITES and his wife Sarah (LEE) STITES. I do not know when they died, but sometime after 1885. I have found others in my family buried at Bethel Cemetery and also the Fort Madison Cemetery. I feel the information given to me by my elderly cousin was accurate. I plan a trip to Missouri in September and would like to locate these graves. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Taunji Stites Waterman Gresham, Oregon

    3. Adair, I know sometimes people become frustrated in not being able to do things they know is possible, just because they don't know how. I've been using the computer and internet for so long that sometimes I forget what people might struggle with. I would like to put together information that would help people using the computer, internet and our Adair site. Do you have something that you would like to know? I know that many genealogist have questions or problems with those "little everyday things", maybe something to do with graphics, computer organization, email or searching on the internet? Anything that you think might help you with your every day activities of using your computer. I'm not really looking for genealogy questions. There are lots of links on how to do that. Just go here for those type of questions: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/ http://www.rootsweb.com/ http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas/learningcenter.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~moadair/resources.htm I will return with a reply on anything you have questions, problems with or just want to know. 3. This was sent to me and I thought it had enough merit to pass on. It isn't to long so check it out if you think you might have family or friends who might be on this list. Kathy Busby Please check the names if you know of or have family that served in Vietnam. The lists are alphabetical and long. I was driving to work this morning and heard of a wonderful new site which may help many of you in your research or personally. Apparently, dog tags from individuals who served in Vietnam who were either missing in action, killed in action, or simply individuals who lost their tags are being sold in Ho Chi Min City on the streets. There are a group of blessed individuals who are buying these up and making them available free of charge to family members of these individuals. The site is <http://www.founddogtags.com>. I hope it can be of help to you or your loved ones. [Original Poster: Stacey Cox, St. Louis, MO]

    1. Carnegey
    2. Just wondering if anyone has any Carnegey relatives in Adair county. My great-grandmother's SS-5 form listed her father as George Washington Graham, and her mother's name as Sarah Carnegey. Her name was Alta Mae Graham, and she was born near Greencastle, MO. I am trying to ascertain if she is related to the Carnegey family who came from Ohio. I did find them on one of the Adair County censuses. Lori <>< "Life is hard, but God is good"

    1. USGenWeb Information
    2. cminor
    3. Adair and Knox lists, First: I hope the following two emails will help clear things up a bit. They have helped me. I have known these two people since 1996 when I got involved with the USGenWeb project and trust their judgement. These messages were on a coordnaters list I am signed up with. I left the names off because I hadn't asked if they would mind my posting their words. If you every have any questions just let me know and I will try and help you out. Second: I'm working out the details along with all the other county coordinators on the posting boards. I'll update you as soon as I can. *smile* Just something new to learn. *smile* Best wishes, Claudia ______________________________________________________ I'm not concerned about Ancestry.com, even though they own Rootsweb.com, because of the public statement they continue to make and because they are regulated by what they can and cannot do by Federal, State and Local agencies. Ancestry is the profit-making side. MyFamily.com and Rootsweb.com are both free access sites. (I'm guessing that by maintaining these free sites, Ancestry has a tax write-off that helps its actual profit margin.) Anyway, because of the fact that Ancestry would literally destroy itself by suddenly taking the info from Rootsweb and announcing it would be sold, I don't think we have anything to worry about from them. If the volunteers have given you stuff to put on your sites, you are in control of that, so it's safe even if you are using the Rootsweb server. If it is info that was put on the GenConnect Boards, which has been transferred into the new system, what we have are the words of Jake Gehring, Executive Producer, Rootsweb.com......"Messages in the new system can be accessed from Ancestry.com or Rootsweb.com and access will remain free." CCs had pointed to Acceptable Use Policy of Rootsweb....of My Family....of Ancestry....and this is what Mr. Gehring wrote in yesterday's Rootsweb Review...."There is some confusion about RootsWeb's position regarding the ownership of messages posted on the boards. Let me clarify by excerpting from the Acceptable Use Policy, which reads, "When you post messages to mailing lists, message boards, and other facilities at RootsWeb, those posts remain your property under copyright law." The same is true for those using the message boards at Ancestry.com. In short, if you posted it, you own it." ______________________________________ There really *is* nothing to be concerned about here, as far as I can see. Here's what we've done, in a nutshell: taken all the message board posts that were at Ancestry, FamilyHistory.com, and RootsWeb, and merged them all into one set of boards that can be accessed either from Ancestry or RootsWeb. This means a couple of things: first, that there are a whole lot of "new" messages on the boards, as far as folks who only visited RW or only visited one of the others are concerned, and the chances of making connections with cousins has about doubled (based on count of posts) for RW users. It also means that there's a greatly increased chance that some cousin who doesn't normally use RW will turn up and find your post--you've just gained an audience of the folks who regularly use Ancestry but don't visit RootsWeb. Bottom line on the hysteria, from my point of view: A lot of you have known me for a long time--I've put in some serious time and work at USGW before I ever worked at RootsWeb, let alone Ancestry. The issues that concern you concern me as well. (I might mention in passing that my family won't starve if I quit my job--and I would do so in a heartbeat if there were ever corporate decisions made that I felt betrayed USGenWeb or longstanding RootsWeb users.) At the time of the merger, last summer, I went to the corporate headquarters in Provo, and I met the folks that make those decisions. I didn't know what I would find when I went, but I came home feeling much better about things. There are folks who continually fan a hysteria of belief that the company is waiting to pounce, any minute, and move everything at RootsWeb behind the subscription wall. We've been assured publicly time and again this won't happen, but of course that's often in tidy, legalese "corporate wording", from people you don't know, and some folks are just naturally disbelieving. I will tell you that I have stood face to face with Andre Brummer, the high mucky-muck of Ancestry, and had him tell me that the bottom line is this (regarding data): *Anything* that doesn't cost to acquire is provided for free. The stuff that you have to subscribe to see is the stuff Ancestry had to *buy* or *lease* (in other words, pay real cash for.) And Ancestry and the parent company, MyFamily.com absolutely support RootsWeb remaining free. They also care very much about USGenWeb, and keeping the USGW association with RootsWeb. (Little known fact: my boss, the guy in charge of the RootsWeb area, Jake Gehring, *is* a USGenWeb county coordinator. Summit County, Utah.) The bottom line is, there are and always have been a cadre of folks in USGenWeb who are in a big hurry to have a crisis. Any thing they can find to raise an uproar about, they will. Most of the folks who follow them are of the same bent (thrive on crises) or just don't think for themselves ("You say there's something to panic about? I better panic then. No way should I research this issue for myself, better to just panic as quick as I can"). I suppose we could call them the Henny Penny group, for those who remember their fairy tales. :-) Changes generally have some pain attached; it's always a hassle to learn a new system. But if it's a good system, within a month or two some of its loudest detractors turn into its strongest supporters: the trick is surviving the transition. :-)

    3. Adair and Knox lists, FYI: It's about 7:00 PM, June 28, 2001 and rootsweb seems to be down at the moment. Below (at the bottom of this email) are a couple of messages I received. This happens every time there is an election with the USGenWeb project. I agree with the first message from Leona L. Gustafson. Most, if not all, of the people/volunteers with the USGenWeb project are just that .... people/volunteers and not associated with rootsweb, Ancestry.com, MyFamilyInc.Com, or anyone other than the USGenWeb project. None of us receive any money and are not asking for any. We do it for you, on our own time for free! *smile* I don't see much we can do about it. But as I stated before, I will do everything I can to protect "Our Adair and Knox County data"! Including, if needed, placing it on my own server, so that it is always available for you for free! It has cost me several hundred dollars to provide info on "Our Adair and Knox County sites", but I would rather spend my money there, than buy those CD's that may contain bogus and un proved information. Note: I resent people who take the genealogy research I have done and send it to them. I want to have control over and protect my family, especially those that are still alive. That is the main reason all the cemetery, census, etc. data is now in PDF format. So that someone can't come in and cut and past all the data, stealing it to sell, that many of you helped transcribe. Most of the information I have personally gathered for my own genealogy has been thru contacting people like you thru email and USGenWeb County sites. I feel it is more trustworthy data. I have always found 99% of people to be giving, friendly, and helpful and I hope to always be that way too. *smile* If you every have any questions or need help I will always try and help you. BUT always, please look on "Our Adair and Knox County sites" before you email me. I place everything I have on those sites. Two of our translators/volunteers RitaJane and Michele have been sending me photos they have taken of tombstones in Adair cemeteries. I have added those photos to our cemetery page. I hope these photos of tombstones are helpful for you. If you have photos you can send them to me and I will place them there. Please be patient with me. *smile* They will not be PDF files so you can right click on them and save a copy. I have made the file size as small as I can so that you can read them (at least most of them) and so that they down load as quickly as possible. In most cases I have retyped the names and dates just in case you can't read them. Michele has also added a suggestion for our sites to update, add and/or correct information. You can see her suggestion on the census page. It is a way you can help make "Our Adair and Knox county" valuable sites with "real" information. Your efforts are appreciated by many and will be for generations to come. *smile* When you send data to Michele, me or others, PLEASE always let the person know why you are sending the info. For "Our Adair or Knox Co. sites" or what ever your purpose is. I personally get too many emails to try and guess. *grin* If I or anyone associated with "Our Adair or Knox Co. sites" every misses placing your data, or does not respond to your email, it is not on purpose. Just politely remind us after a week of not hearing from one of us. We don't mind. Our intentions are good and we're only human. *smile* I'm still working on a CD that will be available as a companion to the "Our Adair site" and eventually will do one for Knox. It will include all that is available on "Our Adair and Knox County sites". I just thought people would like a copy for themselves. It will be as low a cost as I can make it. I have no intentions on making money off of you. The information will (as long as I am able to protect it) be on "Our Adair and Knox Co. sites". I just want to protect and make available all the work we have done together for us and generations to come. Copies will be given to the Adair and Knox County Libraries and Historical Societies. I'm still trying to work out the details of how to present the information on the CD so that it is easy for you to use and can be used by those who have Mac computers. I don't know when I will have it completed but if information you would like to have on it is not on "Our Adair or Knox County sites", please email me with it and I will make sure it is included. That includes any census additions (see Michele's idea on census page) and additions to the cemetery info, especially after 1979. The tombstone photos will also be included on the CD, so send yours if you would like. I would like to add more history and information to our town pages. If you have information or history of towns in Adair and Knox county please send it to me. Your little bits of information all make up "Our Adair and Knox sites". All is important and valuable information. I don't want personal genealogy other than census and cemetery info. If you want to post that type of info, you can post it here: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=Localities.United-20-Stat es.States.Missouri.Counties.Adair click on: Message Boards then: Localities then: North America then: United States then: States then: Missouri then: Counties then: Adair You will see listings of posts for Adair. You can search thru them, post a reply to one of them, or post a new one. It's a pain. *sigh* I still haven't figured out what rootsweb did to it. They say they will shortly add the ability for users to filter by message category within a message board (for queries, obituaries, deeds, etc.). I hope they do. "Our Adair and Knox Co sites" will be updated later so you can go to that category. For now we will have to put up with what they have given us. You might also want to read the letters to the editor of the Kirksville Daily Express. (links on first page of "Our Adair site") They deal with the proposed Veterans Memorial in Kirksville. I and several people who have emailed me are very concerned about this project. I have a lot to say but will reserve my opinion. Read the letters and make up your own mind. Many of you probably get the RootsWeb Review, but for those that don't, here is what they said about the new way of posting and viewing: Hope this helps, Claudia MESSAGE FROM THE ROOTSWEB HOME OFFICE by Jake Gehring, Executive Producer, RootsWeb.com Wow, what a week it has been. The messages have really been flying. In an effort to improve communication from RootsWeb to you (and vice versa), I will be sending out a message every so often which addresses current issues on the RootsWeb site. The RootsWeb staff has received lots of questions since the merger of Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com last summer, and I think there's a general need for our users to have regular information on RootsWeb's efforts to provide valuable services to the genealogical community. I also want to make a few comments about our new message boards system which was launched last week. We're grateful for the excellent feedback many of you have provided. The feedback has been generally positive when addressing the value of the combined datasets and the increased search functionality. However, I also recognize that any significant change requires some getting used to and may create some temporary inconvenience and frustration. I would like to address some of the concerns we've heard from you, the users. By popular request, we will shortly add the ability for users to filter by message category within a message board (for queries, obituaries, deeds, etc.). For the benefit of the message board administrators, we are extending the board re-adoption deadline from July 15 to July 23. There is some confusion about RootsWeb's position regarding the ownership of messages posted on the boards. Let me clarify by excerpting from the Acceptable Use Policy, which reads, "When you post messages to mailing lists, message boards, and other facilities at RootsWeb, those posts remain your property under copyright law." The same is true for those using the message boards at Ancestry.com. In short, if you posted it, you own it. As far as the message boards or any other RootsWeb features are concerned, if you're not happy, we're not happy. Please continue to give us your comments and concerns at http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi or at [TWO-LINE URL] http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=RootsWeb-20- Topics-20-and-20-Localities.AdminCenter.suggestions In the meanwhile, experiment with the newly merged message boards. Here's an article I think people might enjoy reading: http://interactive.wsj.com/public/current/articles/SB992558970976621678.htm Plus, here's some interesting info I received from another list: The U.S. government, ever our benefactor, has decided to increase the cost of SS-5 (social security application)copy requests from $7 to $27, effective 1 July 2001. You can read about the increase at: http://genealogy.about.com/library/tips/bissrates.htm If you have SS-5 copies for your ancestors buried in your research, please get them out and transcribe the information for others via RootsWeb, following the instructions below. We will all be in your debt. 1. Go to: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi 2. Enter the name of the person who is on the form you have into the search engine. 4. When the right entry comes up, go over to the far right and click on "Add Post-Em" link. 5. The "Fill in the blank" form will come up and you can type in the information just like it's printed on the form you have in your hands! 6. Include all the information in the order that it is entered on the form, so that others have the advantage of all that information. NOTE: You don't have to type in the SS Number for the person as the Rootsweb program includes it. You can also find out how to protest the increase (or anything else you don't like about what they're doing) via your elected officials at: http://lcweb.loc.gov/global/legislative/congress.html A former Missouri State Rep on another mailing list suggests the following: 1.) DO NOT send e-mail (he never answered his as a State Rep) 2.) DO call your local officals' offices. 3.) DO follow up with by snail mail until you feel that someone is listening. I find it sad yet amusing that while the government is more than tripling the price of these copies, it has taken them this long to figure out how vast the family research community has become.

I have not been able to determine what happened to Mary Elizabeth after her husband's death. Any information related to Mary Elizabeth (CONLEY) SALLADE's life and/or death would be greatly appreciated. Katherine S.
