John Gilson, born 1814, is in the Columbiana Co. Ohio census in 1850 with son James age 7 (b.1843), (no wife). It is likely this child was either James P. McKaig or a son of John & Mary Ann Ruffe. Mrs. Sarah McKaig, whom he married Feb.06,1851, at Columbiana Co. Ohio. is enumerated very close to John in 1850, just a few houses away. At Black Creek, Stafford Twp. Greene Co. Indiana in 1860 John and Sarah are listed on the census, along with three children listed as Gilson. The children were; Elizabeth Ann b. 1841 Ohio, William Allen b. 1843 Ohio and James P. b. 1845 Ohio. One of the children James Patrick McKaig is thought to be the child of Sarah & John McKaig. Elizabeth & William Allen could be the children of John & (Mary Ann Ruffe) Gilson. James Patrick McKaig is noted as later being married in Greene Co. in the 1870's. I have not found the fate of Sarah, but in 1862 John Gilson marries again to Edney Hunter, daughter of Andrew & Sydney (Stalcup) Hunter. There are several children born presumably in Greene Co. including my Grandfather Joshua. The children Millicent Ann - 1862, George - 1864, Joshua - 1866 and Oliver Perry - 1867 were all born in Indiana prior to the family moving on to Adair County Missouri. In Aug.1868, John Gilson Jr. was born, but I am not sure where. I lost the family in 1870 (census), The family shows up again in 1880 at Adair County, MO. where the family now shows Mary Alice - 1875, Daniel Martin - 1876 and Thomas Levi - 1878 who were all born in Adair Co. Missouri. According to Mary Alice, the family moved from MO. to Nebraska City. NE. in 1879. However we still find John & Edna listed on the 1880 Adair Co. MO. census. I believe shortly after 1880 the family moved from MO. to Four Mile Prescient in Otoe Co. Nebraska, where John may have died. In 1885 Edna is listed on the Nebraska State census as living in Four mile Prescient as a widow. This indicates that John died probably at four mile prescient in Otoe Co. Nebraska, between 1880 and 1885. There were indications that the family had moved into the town of Nebraska City, prior to 1900 with or without John. I have never found the date or location of John Gilson's death, but we presume he died at either Four Mile Prescient or Nebraska City, NE. around 1881. The burning question; John Gilson died between 1880 & 1885 ---If there were burials in Wyuka Cemetery in the 1870's, why isn't John buried there as other Gilson's are ? Adair family researchers, FYI: You can submit your family group sheets to the USGenWeb and/or the Adair and Knox sites. Thought you might like to see the following info from the National level of USGenWeb. Claudia www.rootsweb.com/~moadair Since we started the USFGS Project, about a month ago, we have moved to a new site http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/ We now have all states online & available for use. We made some guidelines: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/guide.html These also include "guiding lines" for states that wish to make this a special state project. There are now 6 states that have done so already: Arizona, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas (was already a SP before we started). We also have a mail "work" list to ask questions, make suggestions, etc. The submission form coding has been changed a little so that a copy of each fgs that is submitted will be sent back to the submitter. They can then take/submit this to another state (without having to type another). Also they can take it to any county site & submit it there, if they wish. This gives the submitter full control of where there fgs is going, & also gives the CC an opportunity to receive more info for their pages, if they choose to do so. While we can't force documentation, a volunteer created a page "How to Create a Well Documented Group Sheet" http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/newmexico/sources.htm We have 22 fabulous, & enthusiastic volunteers, with one just recently becoming a member of USGenWeb. I tried to work it where every volunteer got at least one state of their choice. There is also a couple of folks on "waiting/wish list". Some of the volunteers have "advertised", & although some have not, the family group sheets come in any way. One volunteer made us a suggestion box (at the moment this is just for the volunteers, as we still have a few kinks here & there) Another volunteer made up a volunteer help page for all of us. A guest book has been set up & many positive things have been written: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/guestbook/posted_guest.htm We are currently trying to get a search engine that will search all the states. There should be one there this week but not sure if it remain a freebie. At any rate, each state has a search engine on it. Hi Margaret, The Adair County Historical Society (ACHS) will look up unindexed obits on microfilm and provide a copy for $10 plus a SASE. However, since you don't have the exact date, they may need more than $10 for that. Also, as you may know, obituaries were usually pretty brief in the 19th century. John Gilson b. 1814 Ohio, was listed as a R/R Tie Maker in 1880 Morrow Twp. Adair County, MO. I know what R/R Ties are, but just how did one go about the business of making ties? Were they mass produced, how did they make the ties back in the late 1800's? Did they have contracts with the Railroads? Did they supply to specific Railroads? How were they paid? Any railroad men out there that can answer any of these questions or know what web sites might give me some answers? Thanks Much Dave - [email protected]
Cheryl, I don't believe you can, unless you get permission. But any information that pertains to your own family history, I think, would be OK to use not scan a page and place on web. If you want, you can email Gary G. Lloyd [email protected] He is very nice and has contributed much to our Adair site. He is a part of the Novinger Renewal and will answer your question. We are in the process (at our own pace) of working together on histories of towns in Adair. But we are making them short to encourage people to buy their books. I have been careful not to put the info from those two books (and other info) on the Adair site. because: 1.. copyright laws, new papers are copyrighted. http://stellar-one.com/copyrightgenealogy/ 2.. most importantly, the Novinger Renewal uses the book to make money for their non-profit Coal miner museum and other activities for us. I believe in free access to our families history and I don't normally provide information for things sold, but historical societies and such are, in my mind, different than profit making. They are important resources for us, as apposed to places that sell what we gather. Hope this helps. I understand your feeling of wanting to share. *smile* Best wishes, Claudia www.rootsweb.com/~moadair www.rootsweb.com/~moknox ----- Original Message ----- From: "CL Krajnik" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 10, 2003 2:23 PM Subject: [Adair Co, MO] Hello > Help. Thanks so much for your reply to my request for an obit lookup. This sounds like a wonderful fund-raiser, and I'll keep it in mind for future research. However, as I probably should have mentioned in my original request to the list, Elizabeth Rodhouse Stark was not buried in Adair County. She was from Pike Co., IL, and is buried there. I'd nevertheless be willing to pay the $10.00 to have the Historical Society or a private party look up her obit for me. I'm not sure how long she lived in Kirksville; so am not certain that there would have been an obit in the local newspaper. But, if there was, I'd like to have a copy. Another person who responded to my request suggested that I ask the state archives personnel to do this lookup, so I think I'll try that first. Meanwhile, thanks so much again for your response, and I'll keep your suggestion in mind for future obituary lookups that I'll mosly likely be needing. Hi Annie, In 1988, the Adair County Historical Society was clipping and saving only those obituraries for those buried in Adair County. The chances are then, that the local paper contains an obituary for Elizabeth (Rodhouse) Stark. As a fund raiser, the Adair County Historical Society will look up obituaries from Adair County newspapers on microfilm for a fee of $10 (and I think a stamped, self addressed envelope). Does anyone have access to the records for estates in the 1880's. I am looking for the estate record for one Daniel Vasser believed to have died in or around 1885 in Adair County, Missouri. Thank you. I am not sure if I send directly to the court house whether they will search for me as not sure of exact date of death. Joan Longbrake in Ohio searching the Vasser/Vassar family.
Good Morning All, When I put flowers out for my family and friends at Memorial Day, or any other time, I take extra flowers with me. These I put on the graves that I am pretty sure never get any flowers. I suggest this for each of us now since this is the weekend when the government has us celebrate Memorial Day. (Actual Memorial Day is Friday, the 30th.) Since I will not be at any cemeteries except the local ones this year, I will take extra flowers to with me to decorate... especially the older, long-forgotten ones, whose living family might not even know where to find. First - whatever happened to your medical health care plan; second - why would you run for President after your husband shamed the office; and third - whatever happened to all those things you took when you left the White House?" Just then the bell rings for recess. Hillary Clinton informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess. When they resume Hillary says, "Okay where were we? Oh, that's right, question time. Who has a question?" A different little boy puts his hand up; Hillary points him out and asks him what his name is. "Steve" "And what is your question, Steve?" "I have five questions. First - whatever happened to your medical health care plan; second - why would you run for President after your husband shamed the office; third - whatever happened to all those things you took when you left the White House; fourth - why did the bell go 20 minutes early; and fifth - what happened to Billy?"
