Hello, I have some general questions about the Army and enlisting, etc., that I hope someone might have some answers to. I have an ancestor who served in the Civil War. He was very young, like 13 or 14, when he enlisted as a drummer boy but I believe he lied about his age. After his service during the Civil War he apparently enlists five more times. I guess question one has to do with the difference between these enlistments. The last five show up in the U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 on Ancestry.com. The Civil War ones don't, I'm assuming because those were local Missouri Militia-type enlistments and not the general US Army? Is that sort of correct? Below are the different enlistments after the Civil War: Joseph Rudolph 1 Jul 1869 William Emig 19 Jul 1869 William Emig 19 Jul 1870 William Emig 11 May 1872 Jonathan Ney 6 Aug 1887 These enlistments are all the same man enlisting under different names. All of them were for a period of five years, so you can see the first four are running together. Why in the world would someone enlist under different names so many times? Were they offering bonuses or some other kind of incentive? How could they not know for two years that he had enlisted in two separate companies? How could he not turn up missing? And why wasn't he court marshaled or something? Why was he just allowed to go on and reenlist elsewhere? One references him surrendering....would his punishment just have been to finish serving out his time and that's all? Some of these records have some things listed that I don't know what they mean. "Surrendered December 13, 1873 under G.O. 102, A.G.O. 73 as Joseph Rudolph..." What does the G.O. 102 and the A.G.O. 73 mean? "Deserted May 12th, 1875 from Co. E 3rd Infantry as Joseph Rudolph - 2746 PRD 93" What is the 2746 and what does PRD 93 mean? This has been a long term mystery that is slowly being unraveled, but I really don't understand what he was doing....scamming the Army? Thank you. Janet **************The Average US Credit Score is 692. See Yours in Just 2 Easy Steps! I am trying to find correct information on a soldier. He is buried in Georgia, but, served in Missouri. This is the info I have: John C. Head DOD July 6, 1924 MISSOURI PVT. 350 INF 88 DIV This soldier is buried at Fredonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Thomas Co., GA. This information on his marker, however, I cannot find a service record to verify the data. I am a genealogy volunteer, this is not a family member, but, I feel it is important to identify and appropriately mark all American soldiers. Any help is greatly appreciated. Regards, Winnette Stinson

Hello. My name is Kelley -- I recently completed my Masters degree and am going to law school this fall here in Washington, D.C. School is expensive and I could use some extra money to pay for tuition and loans, so I am offering to do military research at the National Archives (service files, pension files, etc). Generally, a request for this kind of information takes the Archives several months, at a minimum, to process. I can retrieve them much faster and also give you someone to interact with instead of a government form. My fees are reasonable, intended to compensate me for my time, printing costs and postage for what I'll send back to you. The Archives offers extended hours once a month, so I would be doing research over the course of three days each month, and I am more than happy to send you a schedule. If you are interested, please just email me at texlabooks@gmail.com Take care. Kelley

St. Louis, MO . . . The St. Louis Public Library is proud to present a very special evening with Andrew Carroll, editor of the landmark book, Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front in the Words of U.S. Troops and Their Families, and special guest Jeff Shaara. The event takes place at Central Library, 1301 Olive Street, St. Louis, MO 63013 on Thursday, September 27 at 7 p.m. The program is FREE and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of Left Bank Books.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Operation Homecoming is the result of a major initiative launched by the National Endowment for the Arts to inspire U.S. service members and their families to write down and share their personal wartime experiences. Almost 100 uncensored eyewitness accounts, private journals, short stories, letters, e-mails, poems, and other personal writings are featured in the book. In 1998, Andrew Carroll founded the Legacy Project, a national all-volunteer effort to honor and remember those who have served this nation in wartime by seeking out and saving their letters. From this project came Carroll's bestseller War Letters, the compelling correspondence of American military men and women, as well as the PBS documentary of the same name. The book features 200 previously unpublished letters from the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, and Bosnia. Jeff Shaara is the multiple New York Times bestselling author of books such as Gods and Generals, The Last Full Measure, Gone for Soldiers, Rise to Rebellion, Civil War Battlefields, and To the Last Man (which received praise from individuals such as General Tommy Franks, Steve Forbes, and General Wesley Clark). In addition, it garnered Shaara his second "William Young Boyd" Award for Excellence in Military Fiction from the American Library Association. For more information, call 314-206-6779. Upcoming programs at St. Louis Public Library St. Louis Public Library will be hosting a very special program on Saturday, September 22, 2007. Local attorney Jim Gallen and librarian Tom Pearson will be teaming up to present a very special program on the Spanish-American War. Jim will provide insights into the history of the "Splendid Little War," while Tom will provide help for people wanting to learn more about ancestors who participated in that war. Saturday, November 10, 2007 marks a resumption of St. Louis Public Library's ongoing series of lectures on Civil War history. The subject this time: the Battle of Second Manassas. Robert E. Lee and John Pope squared off in August 1862 on much the same ground upon which the Battle of First Manassas was fought a year previously. Find out what happened and why as Tom Pearson walks us through this epic contest of the War Between the States. On Saturday, December 8, 2007, join us as Tom Pearson presents the second installment of his "Science Fiction's Big Ideas" series. That's all. I delete any document with a title that doesn't identify anyone or anything. I don't know if that's all everyone else sees or it's just me, but there needs to be something specific in the email title identifying you. I deleted this and it automatically opens part of the first line. I went to delete and I was able to see "MO-veterans". I rarely do that. There are several other emails with the same thing that I get frequently. I assume they are all regarding MO, but as I said, I delete anything where the name or subject is unrecognizable within the title. Don't know if I'm the only one this happens to or what. :) -----Original Message----- From: mo-veterans-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mo-veterans-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Betty Eckgren Sent: Tuesday, October 03, 2006 11:47 PM To: mo-veterans@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: New Administrator Hello, Jan Buker, Thank you for your e-mails re. the MO-Veterans. I have been receiving quite a few "listings" (if this is what they are called) and find this a friendly exchange. Last year (April 7th, 2005) I submitted about two typed pages of information about my dear dad, who was a soldier in World War One and mysteriously changed his name from Ruskin Louis Friton, born in St. Louis, MO, to Thomas Burton, born in California. He vanished forever from his loving family, married my mother, a Red Cross nurse, and moved us out to Los Angeles, where I grew up. I've never solved this mystery but was able to find his family in St. Louis, who have been helping me in my sleuthing. I've even written a book about this true story: A Changed Man; An Old Army Mystery , published by Trafford Publishing, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, where I now live. I discovered today that MO-Veterans has recorded my two-page account in their Archives>2005-04> 1112904129. I'm delighted. I am not up to speed as to your website and how researchers are able to post their notices on something of an internet bulletin board. I believe this is a comparatively new feature (?) I don't know the RootsWeb rules, which, among other things, probably limit the length of the notice. I couldn't find your website (Just RootsWeb.com) with any instructions. It's quite possible, also, that since my listing is already in place in the Archives, that I do not have the option of a further listing on your "bulletin board" Sorry I'm not better informed about all this, but I'd much appreciate any information and or suggestions you might give me.
