This is from the recent Gateway Family Historian put out by Kathleen Smith & Tom Pearson of the St Louis Public Library. It's a terrific publication. It's an example of how a little clue can make a big difference in our research. These are common nicknames that were used, "way back when." Sarah - Sally Elizabeth - Betsy, Bess, Bessie Caroline - Caddie Dorothy - Dolly Frances - Fannie Florence - Flossie (also used for the male Florenz) Harriet - Hattie Mary - Molly or Polly Without going into detail, both the Sarah/Sally and Mary/Molly or Polly were of immediate help to me. Thanks Kathy & Tom. Gary Stoltman Mercerville, NJ
I have two "Marys" who were Mamies, Anns who were Nans and Ellen who was a Nell. That Sarah helps. My husband's family tree has a Sally but all I could find on the census was a Sarah. Didn't know if it was a misread tombstone or what. What is the Gateway Family Historian and where can I get it? Thanks Georgia Gary Stoltman wrote: > This is from the recent Gateway Family Historian put out by Kathleen Smith & Tom Pearson of the St Louis Public Library. Has anyone ever heard the name Dorth - short for Dorothy? My aunt was always called that. And my mom was Betz - her name was Betty Jane Karen -----Original Message----- From: Georgia Clark [mailto:georgia@corpsie.com] Sent: Wednesday, September 24, 2003 11:27 AM To: MO-STLOUIS-METRO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [StL-Metro] Nicknames I have two "Marys" who were Mamies, Anns who were Nans and Ellen who was a Nell.
