    1. [StL-Metro] Census questions about townships and where these places are

    3. I have a CD that is titled 1860 MO census. It is not indexed. So I created my own sort of index. Shows the CD page (not necessarily the same as the census page # ...sometimes it is and sometimes it does not seem to be) The township and the Post Office from the header of the pages. The following is what I saw: TOWNSHIP POST OFFICE Bonhomme Township Fenton Town of Carondelet Carondolet Central Township Rock Hill The town of Kowell?? St. Louis Township Carondolet The Inn of Lourle?? St. Louis Township Carondolet The Inn of Lourle?? St. Louis Township Carondolet Saint Ann of St. of Louis township?? Carondolet The Town of Lowell St. Louis Township Carondolet clearly written St. Louis Township Carondolet St. Louis Township Missouri Merimec Township Fenton Meramec Township Fenton St. Ferdinand Township St. Ferdinand - Florrissant PO St. Ferdinand Township Florissant St. Ferdinand Township Bridgeton My questions: 1. Any idea how these corresponded to wards? 2. Any idea what these areas correspond to today on a map of St. Louis? a. Is it safe to assume Fenton is where Fenton is now and Rock Hill, Florissant, and Bridgeton too??? b. Anyone know if there is some kind of old postal office zone map available? 3. Any idea how the census was done and how the pages were numbered? The numbering seems odd, with page numbers "renumbered" 4. As the handwriting is not always legible and there does not seem to be an index for the names on this CD that tell you where they are located (major bummer) it is hard to use this without some kind of framework. 5. Is it probable that the place listed as St. Louis Township with the Carondelet Post Office is the City as we know it? Any help is appreciated. I would like to be able to use this to do look ups but for the life of me, I can't figure it out and I have the thing!! I eventually will try to transcribe what I think the surnames are by page but there are 688 page images on the CD so this is not going to be fast or easy. Laura
