I don't know anything about Camp Halcyon, Betty, but from 1952 (age 9) until 1965, I lived on Lalite in the Walnut Park area. The street to the north, beautiful with a parkway, was Garesche. We had heard that a Mr. Garesche had once owned all the land around there and the surrounding streets were named for his daughters....Lillian, Sherry, Lalite, Laura, Helen? Any relation -- and do you know if this is true? Thanks, Peggy Kruse Florissant In a message dated 5/24/2005 9:50:14 A.M. My great aunt, Mimi H. Garesché and her friend, Ann O. Watt, who both taught phys ed at Roosevelt High School in St. Louis, were the owners. My late aunt, then Dorothy Garesché, and her cousin, Emilie Garesché, both went to the camp in 1917. I'm trying to document the history of the camp as part of our family history, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I remember someone in the family took me to visit the site in the 40s when I was little. It was a beautiful piece of property, but the buildings had burned down. I don't know when that happened, so I have placed an inquiry at the Holland Public Library. But it also would be wonderful to know about the campers, too. Thanks, Betty Garesché Torno
Dear Peggy, Some of the information about those streets is in the book on St. Louis streets, but, to answer your question, Garesché (spelled wrong - easy enough - on one of the street signs) was named for A. J. P. Garesché, a lawyer who married Emma Jennings and was my great great uncle. The reason some of the street were named for family members, as I understand it, (Mimika - his mother, Lalite - a cousin, Clara - I think an aunt, Lillian - not sure who) is that they developed the land - Jennings Heights, so they named the streets. The streets I'm not sure of were Jennings relatives and my map of Jennings Heights is buried in "stuff," so I can't get at it. Not like having a street named in your HONOR, like Lindbergh! Sort of like having a vanity plate on your car - at a larger scale......
