In the 1860 census in ward 10 there is a Philipine Spare with 2 kids and some people with the last name Spangler. She was born in Dempstead in 1833. Lynne Gantt ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
i , The real married name for PHILIPPINA is SPOERI, as shown on marriage record. The images of 1860 census shows dreadful writing. But still valuable info on it. Notably that 'PHILIPINE' was 27 years old with two daughters, CATHERINE 5, and CRISTINE 2, both born MO. Philipine Spare is listed as having $5,000 property and $1,000 personal. More than anyone else on that page except for a merchant !! The thought crosses the mind that perhaps husband is already dead. Philippina never marries again. [It seems that she herself died Aug 17, 1880 --as noted on 1880 census.] The SPANGLER family she lives with turns out to be Tobias SPENGLER, a brewer, and wife CRISTINA age 36, born Darmstadt [in later census]. Same place of birth as Philippina ! I suggest that these are the two SEELINGER sisters who started this search. Tobias & Cristina have two children, Tobias 12 <1848>, and Catherine 2 <1858>, both born Darmstadt.[ Twenty years later, Tobias Jr. is shown both as a brewer and as an inmate at St. Vincents for the Insane.] Now to the 1880 census in the 6th ward at 922 Madison St. near Chambers St. PHILOPENA SPOERI, now 46 years, seems to be living with both daughters. Cristina age 22 [now listed as 'Tina'] married Henry WOERTHMULLER,age 28 or 29, born Switzerland. A wood carver. A 5 month old son HARRY [May 1880] . Also there is a sister-in-law KATIE UTER, age 24 <1856>. She is listed as divorced with son LOUIS UTER age 5 <1875>. My curiosity found that there was a WILLIAM UTEN who also worked as a wooden worker. The names WOERTHMULLER and UTER/UTEN cannot be found on later census. Perhaps the person who posed the original question to our list can fill out the picture of what happened to PHILIPPINA and CRISTINA SEELINGER's children in St Louis. It's always good to know how the story ends !! Kitty GMECPA@aol.com wrote: In the 1860 census in ward 10 there is a Philipine Spare with 2 kids and some people with the last name Spangler. Wow, that is a lot of information that you have furnished. I sure do thank you. Now I need to satisfy myself that this is indeed the correct Seelinger. "My" Philippina was born in Lampertheim, which is in Hesse as is Darmstadt, but I had never heard of Darmstadt in relation to my Seelinger family. So, because they are close someone may know if I am on the right track. I have "my" Philippina's birth record from the Lutheran church in Lampertheim - and in the 1830's I do not know if Lampertheim and Darmstadt are that close. The hunt continues, but with some very good leads. Hi, The image on Heritage Quest for the 1880 census differs from the info shown on Family Search site ---but remember the census was done twice in St Louis. Heritage Quest image shows PHILIPINA SPOERI, age 46, born HESSE-DARMSTADT. Living at 922 Madison Street with daughters Catherine Woerthmuller, age 22, and Christina Uter, age 24, divorced with 5 year old son Louis. As I recall, Philipina died in August 1880 as noted on census image. In later census there are other SPOERI enumerated who appear to be descendants of earlier SPOERI men. The descendants are also brewers. Looks to me as if the SPOERI man who married Philipina came over with other brothers. Likewise there are more SPENGLER mention as brewers in later census. If PHILIPPINA is not yours, then I'm a monkey's uncle!! Might there be some wills online ??
