This was in the St Louis Post Dispatch today, 8 May 2007. St Charles Section, page B-3. (website: stltoday.com) For anyone who wants to get involved, you can probably contact Mr. ONeill who wrote the article. Old Cemeterys Owner Is Seeking A Savior by Tim ONeill Washington Park Cemetery is located at Natural Bridge Rd and McDonnell Blvd. The owner says it will take an angel to save the old graveyard from its sad, twisted past. Entire sections of the cemetery are overgrown and the interior is thick with growth that overwhelms many tilting headstones. The cemetery dates to 1902 and has about 30,000 grave sites south of I-70 and supposedly began as a burial place for black residents of rural areas of north St Louis County. (No names were mentioned in the article.) The bottom line to this article is the owner, Mr. Ronald Kuper, is looking for someone else to step in and take over; he is looking for grants or sponsors to help him clean up the overgrowth and restore the cemetery. - - - - I guess this article really hit home with me because I have some of my KIDD ancestors in a cemetery down in Blount County, TN that until last year was in this same pitiful condition. We couldnt get more than a foot into most of it because of all the vegetation. Luckily, a drive got spearheaded from neighbors, donations, and church involvement and today it is in beautiful condition once again and my KIDD tombstones have all been identified.
