    3. Diane, I remember the article because my husband's ggrandfather, Charles Spraul, was a butcher and we exchanged emails on the subject. I will look thru my files and see if I can find a copy. 3. Does anyone remember when I transcribed an article about Butchertown from the Globe Democrat into the list? I think it was around 2005. Anyyway, I have searched all over the archives of Rootsweb in both the Irish in St. Louis and the St. Louis Metro lists to try to find the two part transcription of a really nice article about Butchertown. I am looking for the link to the articles so I can put it back into this list for people who are interested in locations where butchers lived in St. Louis from around 1840 to the early 1900's. I thought it was an interesting article and would be interesting to Kate from Charlottesville. Thanks! Diane Hi all- I am researching my maternal grandmother's grandparents, Fred and Margarete Jakob. I believe I have found them on the 1910 in St Louis, MO and on the 1920 census in East St Louis, St Clair County, Illinois. I also have what I believe to be Fred Jakob's death certificate in March of 1920. He and his wife had moved back to St Louis, Missouri(1435 Missouri Ave) 28 days before he died. Fred was a Butcher on all the records I have found, it seems Margarete helped run a bakery in 1910. It looks like they lived at Chouterain Ave? I'm pretty sure Margarete and their son Fred went back to visit Austria when Fred was a child, around 1900. I find who I believe to be Fred, the butcher in St Louis in 1900, and he matches up pretty well, but he is living with a lodger, and his wife and son aren't with him. I 'm basically searching for any information about the area where they lived, possibly websites of where I could find old photos of St Louis? Also, if there are any St Louis directories online, I'd love to know where they are. :) And, I have access to Heritage Quest if anyone needs a census look up from 1790-1820 and 1860-1920, I'm happy to try to help out. Thanks! Kate Charlottesville, Virginia >

    1. Re: [MO-STLOUIS-METRO] Philippina Seelinger Marriage --NEW INFO !!
    2. Kathleen Watkins
    3. Hi, The image on Heritage Quest for the 1880 census differs from the info shown on Family Search site ---but remember the census was done twice in St Louis. Heritage Quest image shows PHILIPINA SPOERI, age 46, born HESSE-DARMSTADT. Living at 922 Madison Street with daughters Catherine Woerthmuller, age 22, and Christina Uter, age 24, divorced with 5 year old son Louis. As I recall, Philipina died in August 1880 as noted on census image. In later census there are other SPOERI enumerated who appear to be descendants of earlier SPOERI men. The descendants are also brewers. Looks to me as if the SPOERI man who married Philipina came over with other brothers. Likewise there are more SPENGLER mention as brewers in later census. If PHILIPPINA is not yours, then I'm a monkey's uncle!! Might there be some wills online ?? Kitty Philips Family <family_of_philip@earthlink.net> wrote: Wow, that is a lot of information that you have furnished. I sure do thank you. Now I need to satisfy myself that this is indeed the correct Seelinger. "My" Philippina was born in Lampertheim, which is in Hesse as is Darmstadt, but I had never heard of Darmstadt in relation to my Seelinger family. So, because they are close someone may know if I am on the right track. I have "my" Philippina's birth record from the Lutheran church in Lampertheim - and in the 1830's I do not know if Lampertheim and Darmstadt are that close. The hunt continues, but with some very good leads. 3. Thank you so much. I will forward this information on to my husband's cousin's daughter (lol). My husband is the 6th of 7 children to a father who was 6th in a family that had 6 children. If his older cousins don't know, then know one knows, so I was surprised that she would contact me. Our line never knew Aunt Hazel, let alone her MARRIED name! I appreciate your help Lynne. 1. Re: [MO-STLOUIS-METRO] Philippina Seelinger Marriage --NEW INFO !!
    2. Kathleen Watkins
    3. i , The real married name for PHILIPPINA is SPOERI, as shown on marriage record. The images of 1860 census shows dreadful writing. But still valuable info on it. Notably that 'PHILIPINE' was 27 years old with two daughters, CATHERINE 5, and CRISTINE 2, both born MO. Philipine Spare is listed as having $5,000 property and $1,000 personal. More than anyone else on that page except for a merchant !! The thought crosses the mind that perhaps husband is already dead. Philippina never marries again. [It seems that she herself died Aug 17, 1880 --as noted on 1880 census.] The SPANGLER family she lives with turns out to be Tobias SPENGLER, a brewer, and wife CRISTINA age 36, born Darmstadt [in later census]. Same place of birth as Philippina ! I suggest that these are the two SEELINGER sisters who started this search. Tobias & Cristina have two children, Tobias 12 <1848>, and Catherine 2 <1858>, both born Darmstadt.[ Twenty years later, Tobias Jr. is shown both as a brewer and as an inmate at St. Vincents for the Insane.] Now to the 1880 census in the 6th ward at 922 Madison St. near Chambers St. PHILOPENA SPOERI, now 46 years, seems to be living with both daughters. Cristina age 22 [now listed as 'Tina'] married Henry WOERTHMULLER,age 28 or 29, born Switzerland. A wood carver. A 5 month old son HARRY [May 1880] . Also there is a sister-in-law KATIE UTER, age 24 <1856>. She is listed as divorced with son LOUIS UTER age 5 <1875>. My curiosity found that there was a WILLIAM UTEN who also worked as a wooden worker. The names WOERTHMULLER and UTER/UTEN cannot be found on later census. Perhaps the person who posed the original question to our list can fill out the picture of what happened to PHILIPPINA and CRISTINA SEELINGER's children in St Louis. It's always good to know how the story ends !! Kitty GMECPA@aol.com wrote: In the 1860 census in ward 10 there is a Philipine Spare with 2 kids and some people with the last name Spangler. 3. I am trying to get information on this lady. She was born in Webster Groves, St. Louis County, Missouri on December 15, 1901. I am trying to find out who she married and when. This is my second stop for her information - first I quizzed some of my in-laws who may have known her. She was the younger sister of my husband's grandmother. A trip to the library is in my future! 2. Edward Schmidt
    3. Hi Phil, I think I found their marriage as follows: Phillipine SEEBINGER and Loudwig SPOERI were listed in the marriage index, date: 7/08/54 in Vol. 7 page 12. I also looked at the 1860 census index but could not find them there. I don't know their religion but sometimes that helps. I'm familiar with Catholic marriages and if that's the case you can get a church copy of the marriage. Good luck, ED S. 1. [MO-STLOUIS-METRO] Philippina Seelinger Marriage . . .
    2. Philips Family
    3. Folks - My ggf Philip Frederick Seelinger's obit in 1890 stated that two sisters were living in St Louis. I have reason to believe that one of them, Philippina Seelinger, may have married and settled in St Louis. Philipine Seelinger (slightly different spelling of the first name on the passenger list) arrived in New York on 31 Aug 1854 aboard the ship Douan. The port of departure was Hamburg. She was born in Lampertheim, Germany, on 13 Apr 1833. I cannot find her in the 1860 census. Can someone check the St Louis marriages for the period 01 Sep 1854 through the 1860 census for St Louis? If found, please provide me as much information as available, in particular her married name. I know very little about my family and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Phil Philip B Seelinger
