My word, my friends on the list sure get rowdy with me sometimes when I leave something undone. So here is the info I am searching for. Betty Mae Brown was the daughter of Septimus Brown and was born July 6, 1899 in Ellsinore, MO in Carter County. She married Ralph Waldo Brasher Sr in Cape Girardeau, MO, March 30, 1915 and became Betty Mae Brown Brasher. The happy couple would have two children; Ralph Jr in 1916 and Nolda May in 1918. By 1919 the happy couple was no longer happy and was divorced by the 1920 census. Sometime in the mid to late 1920s Betty would place her two children in homes for wayward children in Independence, MO. The two children were approximately 6 and 8 years old when this took place and I can't even guess how wayward a six and eight year child can be. They would remain there until 1933. Knowing her great beauty could not be concealed from the world for any great length of time, she headed for Hollywood where she would re-marry sometime in the 20s, 30s or 40s. (I suspect the 30s) The mystery man had a last name; "Stevenson," according to Betty Mae's death certificate of 1953, from Juneau, Alaska. No one in the family knows what his first name was. I know she appeared in a movie but have not one shred of evidence what the name was or what name she used; it could have been: Betty Mae Brown Mae or May Brown Betty Brasher Mae or May Brasher Betty Stephenson Betty Stevens Or any combination of the above names, but I suspect Brown. I have pictures of this grandmother, who I have always thought of as "the wicked witch of the north." I must admit she was a pretty good looking woman though. Most will remember my search for Septimus Brown's second family and my brick wall. As a refresher you can find that story at the below address. The found family was Betty Mae's sisters and brothers. http://www.ancestrymagazine.com/2007/03/found/she-had-me-at-junkyard/<http://www.ancestrymagazine.com/2007/03/found/she-had-me-at-junkyard/> The story was very well written by Megan Smolenyak, a professional genealogist for Ancestry Dot Com Magazine. There you have it, my father's mother and another closet full of skeletons.----Jim

Recently some List members have expressed an interest in finding information in St. Charles County. In today's (30 Apr 2007) Post-Dispatch there is an article about the St. Charles County Genealogical Society - page A26. You can read the whole article by going to _www.stltoday.com_ (http://www.stltoday.com) and searching on Tracing your roots. The genealogical society has a website - _www.rootsweb.com/~mosccgs_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~mosccgs) There are also contact people and phone numbers listed in the article. In Saturday's (28 Apr 2007) Post-Dispatch on page A26 there is an article from London which states that the British government has a project whereby they will be posting online 3 million names of slaves held across the British Empire in the early 19th Century. The information will be taken from registers dating from 1813 to 1834 and will be made available online for free within the next year according to spokesman Simon Ziviani from Ancestry.co.uk. The database will be searchable by first and last name, island, plantation, age and sex. Gloria ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
One question: Are the only church records online with Ancestry those of the Old Cathedral? I tried going through a few pages and it seemed those were the only ones I could find. My ancestors were mostly Irish and history with St. Patrick's and St. Lawrence O'Toole. I know there are some records from these churches at the city library but I don't have access to those as I live in N.C. I am searching for information on the Bernero - Gazzolo families who lived in St. Louis about 1900-1930s. Peter and Catherine Gazzolo lived on Pine in 1900 and ran a saloon. Could anyone check the city directory. I have death records at Calvary Cem. They had at least 4 children Mary J. Gazzolo, August J, Catherine (Kate) and Clara. A Bart Bernero was buried with them in the cemetery. I have looked at the Missouri death records, 1870 and 1900 census. They were in Cincinnati Ohio in 1870. I need to know if there are any present day living relatives. Thanks. Mary ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Hi Ken There were also Bloody Island (known for the dueling that took place there - now part of E. StL directly across from StL), Quarantine Island (Carondelet - obvious name for its use) and Duncan Island (the near south side StL). Bloody Island and Duncan's Island disappeared as a result of the efforts started by an army engineer name of Robert E. Lee back in 1854 - six years prior to his schedule becoming much more hectic. Seems that Bloody and Duncan were connecting via a shared sand bar and that the gulf between Bloody and EStL was growing larger and deeper. This would have left StL high and dry - no longer a useful port north of the Soulard area. Your question about Mosenthine Island came up about 5 years ago. As I remember, there were families living there but it was claimed by Madison or St. Clair Co's., Illinois then. Someone out there correct me if I've got this wrong! John Maurath - were are you? The islands are currently known as: Chouteau Island (Grand Isle or Big Island); Gabaret Island (Cabaret Island, Isle de Cabaret, Cattarot, or French Tavern); Mosenthein Island; and the former Kerr's Island (Presqu'Isle, or Presque Island - I believe it's now part of Venice on the mainland). I would appreciate historical information on any of the islands, but Mosenthein, in particular. Supposedly it is named for a family that owned or lived on the island around 1900. This is a very unusual name, and only a few pop up in the St. Louis Missouri censuses around that time .... I've had no luck at all in Illinois. One source states that: "The first [rowing] regatta sponsored by Central [Rowing Club] was in 1892. It included a special match race between two oarswomen : One from Chicago and Central's Rose Mosenthein (whose father named Mosenthein Island in the Mississippi). The race boats then were mostly skiffs and flatboats, with the first six man barge not having been purchased until around 1894." [From Karl Heilman's on-line history of rowing in St. Louis. I wrote to Mr. Heilman, but he knows nothing more about Rose or the family]. Help ............... I spent some time perusing the Catholic records, and didn't find a treasure. There were several notable early Saint Louisans listed, but there doesn't appear to be an index, and the only way to access the records is to go through the new data base listing at Ancestry.com. Then you page through one page at a time. Some of the records are in French and some are in English. Names of the couple are written in the left column of each page. Under the dated statement of marriage is a listing of all the friends who attended the ceremony. Those are interesting in and of themselves, since they also give an idea as to who knew who back then. -----Original Message----- From: mo-stlouis-metro-request@rootsweb.com To: mo-stlouis-metro@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, 29 Apr 2007 2:00 AM Subject: MO-STLOUIS-METRO Digest, Vol 2, Issue 52 Today's Topics: 1. I looked at the listing on the page and it included some states in the US. Missouri was one of them. So I clicked on Missouri and found a collection of records of early churches. So I clicked on the late 1800's and found that the cathedral records are there! I went into the records to see how well they are photographed and they look very good. The first records I saw were for baptisms in 1856 for a families named Boyle, McNabb, Kerns, Curran, etc. These are all records - not just French ones. This is exciting for people who don't have access to St. Louis early church records. I must say it was hard to find, though. http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/list.aspx?dbid=1111&path=Missouri The above URL is the one I used to find it. I don't know if it will work without a log in. As I said, I was searching Canada when I found them. You will need a full access subscription to Ancestry to access these files. I wish I had had more time to find out how many churches were there. If anyone else finds this treasure, please write down how you got there!!!
