    3. August 11, 2003 Project Pioneers completes successful year Excerpt from a news release http://www.suntimesnews.com/7/News%20archives/august_03archives/0811projects.htm STE. GENEVIEVE -- The legacy begun in 1989 by Lucille Basler has been duplicated again this year as Project Pioneers honored the French Robert dit Politte family and the German Baumann-Bauman family at the Ste. Genevieve Jour de Fete. Awards were presented Sunday afternoon to the oldest lady and oldest gentleman attending from each family, and to the one traveling the farthest to attend. Since 2004 marks the 15th year for Project Pioneers, the committee decided to honor three families next year. The French family will be the Labruyere family, and the German family will be the Herman/Hermann families. An African-American family, the Brooks, also will be honored. The Jour de Fete should be August 14 & 15, 2004, it’s always second weekend of August. Project Pioneers is putting out an urgent plea to anyone connected to any of these families to turn in their information as soon as possible. The committee hopes to have books at the Ozark Regional Library in Ste. Genevieve for proofing by Christmas. Charts for entering the information can be picked up at the library in Ste. Genevieve, or call Barbara Basler at 573-883-3134 or Mary Ann Rollet at 573-543-2039 to request copies by mail. 3. Here is a tidbit for the out-of-towners in our group: Did you know that the circulating collection of the National Genealogical Society is located at the St. Louis County Library in Missouri? Every book in the NGS Special Collection at St. Louis is available for Interlibrary Loan. Members and non members are advised to check the NGS Online Catalog to search for books of interest. Books available for loan carry the notation "SLCL - NGS Collection." Please print the catalog record and take it to a public or other library through which you can make the ILL request. 1. [StL-Metro] Visit to the Shrine of St. Joseph
    2. Diane
    3. This Saturday, my husband and I spent the evening at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel. We ate dinner in the same room where a photo of my parents was taken in the mid 1940's, when they were married. On Sunday morning, we attended Mass at the Shrine of St. Joseph, a restored Catholic church located at 11th and Biddle. The shrine is a precious piece of St. Louis history and is overwhelmingly beautiful. I have traveled to Europe and to Ireland and I think the shrine is every bit as beautiful as any of the European churches I have seen. St. Joseph's was a German church. The cornerstone of the first St. Joseph's church was blessed on April 14, 1844 by Bishop Peter R. Kenrick. St. Joseph's was built on land donated by Mrs. Ann Biddle, daughter of John Mullanphy and widow of Major Thomas Biddle who was killed in a duel with Colonel Pettis on Bloody Island - a long remembered event in early St. Louis history. The church was dedicated in August of 1846, the same year that Ann Biddle died. St. Joseph's Shrine is famous and infamous. It is infamous because ( in the 1990's?) the parish priest (Fr. Phillipine??) was murdered there. The three young perpetrators were caught. Two are dead. One served his time and is free. It is famous because an authenticated miracle took place there. Also, during the last great cholera epidemic in St. Louis, (August and September of 1849) during which an average of 280 deaths took place in St. Louis daily, members of the church gathered and made a vow that if they and their families were spared, they would build a memento of gratitude to St. Joseph. All of them were spared and they built the altar in the church. This altar is definitely impressive. The web page for the shrine is here. It has a virtual tour and represents the shrine well. http://www.shrineofstjoseph.org/ While on the tour of the church, I wrote down the names of the donors of the stained glass windows. Since the church was first built in 1846, I assume the windows could date back that far. Here are the donors' names: Catherine BERGER, Francisca BERGER, LINKOGEL and LANDEZETTEL, Henry ASHOFF, John DUSSOLD, Theo JENNEMANN Family, Mrs. A.B. DIEHL. While on the tour of the rectory, the guide showed us three very old pettipoint needlepoints: The first was done by a ten year old girl in 1873 and depicted King David. The name of the ten year old girl was Theresia HOLMANN. The second was called "Queen of Heaven" and was done by a twelve year old girl named Emma DIEHL in 1882. The third was called "Ishmael's Banishment" and was made by a 14 year old girl named Mary SCHMISSEUR in 1870. I recommend visiting this site to anyone - Catholic and non-Catholic alike. The church carries the scars of the cholera epidemics, the Civil War, and inner city deterioration, but has emerged under the care of the "friends of the Shrine of St. Joseph" to be a very beautiful and awe inspiring piece of St. Louis history. St. Louis North LDS Family History Center Seminar Series. Saturday, 6 September 2003; 10:00 AM Howdershell LDS Church in Hazelwood, MO A Case Study in Genealogy Research Using the Internet" by Fred H. Held Fred visited a HELD reunion on August 17 in Wright City. The family had been researched by some of the family, but only had information on one immigrant HELD, the names of his parents, and where they were from. When Fred came home he started using the internet and within 6 hours found that their lone ancestor had two siblings that also immigrated to Warren Co. He also found that the family had been well researched and the data were immediately available. In all there were 11 children. In addition, one family researcher had been successful in researching an almost complete pedigree for 4 more generations along both of the parents lines. Fred will discuss the tools and techniques to do successful genealogical research on the internet by duplicating this effort.

    1. Re: [StL-Metro] Library memberships
    2. Diane
    3. I think I need to reiterate that the St. Louis County library is obligated to restrict free membership in the library to only St. Louis County and paid memberships to surrounding counties. They do not offer membership - regardless of how much you are willing to pay - to patrons who live outside of the St. Louis County (and surrounding counties) area. As a Jefferson County resident, I qualify for paid membership because I live in an adjacent county. I am certainly not an expert on this subject. To get the information from the library, call (314) 994-3300. Diane Shaw Antonia, MO

    1. [StL-Metro] Library memberships
    2. Diane
    3. To the list: I paid 50 dollars for a St. Louis County Library card. I live in Jefferson County. Taxes in Jeff County are considerably lower than they are in St. Louis County. As a Jeff County resident who uses absolutely every genealogical resource that the St. Louis County Library has to offer, I have absolutely no problem with paying $50.00. It is money well spent. However, I recognize that not everyone will agree with that. You can use the St. Louis County Library free of charge - even if you are from Jefferson County and do not pay taxes to St. Louis County. They do ask for your card when you use a computer and for other services. I bought a card because I felt it was the right thing to do and because I want to have Heritage Quest access as well as access to the books and internet PCs at the St. Louis County library. I have a St. Louis City library card because I work in the city of St. Louis and therefore I pay the 1 percent city earnings tax. Library membership is the only advantage I see that I get for the 1 percent tax. Folks who work in the city have the right to a St. Louis Public Library Card. I don't know their policy about membership for St. Louis County residents. Diane Shaw Antonia, MO (in the beautiful rolling hills of Jefferson County- Little Kerry)

    1. [StL-Metro] St Louis City is not in St Louis County since 1876
    2. Hello Listers, Most of you on this list already know that St. Louis City divorced itself from St. Louis County in 1876. It is both a city and a county by itself. But it usually comes as a surprise to those who assume it must be in the county of the same name. Anyone living in the City of St. Louis can get a free library card from St. Louis Public Library which is in the City. It receives taxes from the City. Anyone living in St. Louis County can get a free library card from the St. Louis County Library, which receives taxes from the County. Some of us who live in the County have contributed yearly to the Friends of the St. Louis Public Library in the City and do get a free card. I don't know if this would entitle us to use Heritage Quest in the City. Hope this helps to clear up some location problems for new researchers. LaVerne

    1. [StL-Metro] Library card
    2. Kim Byerly
    3. As a friend of Diane's and a fellow Jefferson County resident, we did pay 50.00 for a library card at the St. Louis County library. Since we do not pay St. Louis county taxes, which funds the library system, I understand the charge but it is a little high. It was 25.00 but recently was increased. This entitles us to the Heritage Quest membership and the ability to order LDS films. If we just wanted to do research at the library, there wouldn't be any charge. All in all, I have gotten my money's worth from the charge, especially with Heritage Quest. Kim Byerly Festus, MO
