    3. Hi Laura, You must be rbozzay. Thanks for your message. I guess I misled you and others. I know where Maplewood is I was just referring to the map which seems to have omitted that nice location. Thanks also to Ruth Ann, Gloria, Ed S., and Bill. I now know more than I did earlier today. 3. Hi, George! Maplewood is to the Southeast of Brentwood. If you find the intersection of Big Bend and Manchester you find Maplewood. It is sort of bordered by the city, Webster Groves, Brentwood, areas. Hope that helps. 2. Did you know a hearty bunch of souls are floating down various rivers at this moment recreating the Lewis and Clark expedition. It began in Pittsburgh and caused some grumbling amid the voyagers when someone in that fair city called it the gateway to the West. A childhood friend of mine is amongst those boatmen. He is not happy that Pittsburgh would be even thought of as the gateway to the West. Maybe Pittsburgh might be considered the back door to the west?----Jim PS They look mighty "Spry" in their recreated uniforms for the trip. I've seen pictures.

    3. Hi rbozzay, The Metro St. Louis Map is great but where is Maplewood? Is it part of Brentwood? Back in the 30s in the summer I used to ride the Manchester Car out to Maplewood to stay a week at a time with my Uncle Ed and Aunt Lou. I used to get off the car at the stop by Bartold's Bar where the car may a sharp left turn to head for a big trestle and on out. What a great summer week I had there. Maybe the street was named Barthold, I just can't remember but it was a great location. George Ude

    3. Dear Laura, Did you check the obit index at the ST. Louis Public LIbrary for John, Sr.? http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/libsrc/obit.htm Also, marriage indices if you are looking for info on wife Elsie. http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/libsrc/geneinfo.htm It would be helpful if you can get an approximate date for the marriage. Following is from Kathy Smith at the library: "As for marriages, "before 1913" is ok because there is a single set that covers 1881-1911, then it's just a couple of extra years. 1925/26, for instance, is ok also - usually any span of about five years or less is not too bad. The films after 1911 are arranged two years at a time, if that helps. A range of 1922 to 1943 gets a bit trickier, but can sometimes be narrowed down by checking the city directories, which list spouses after 1930". John MEIER died between 1910 and 1918, his wife, Theresa MEIER (nee NEUDECKER) died 1918 and know that she is interred at Valhalla and thought perhaps John was also interred at Valhalla. Their son, John, born about 1890 was married to a lady named Elsie - in 1930 they lived at 5446 Hodimont Ave., and I thought perhaps they too are interred at Valhalla. John and Elsie had a daughter named Mildred born about 1913. Thanks Laura California

    1. [StL-Metro] The Wrap-Up on Rats
    2. Did you know that just 20 miles southwest of St Louis there is a very important breeding program taking place concerning the Mexican gray wolf? It was founded by a St Louis zoo director named Marlin Perkins and his wife Carol in 1971. Only a little over 140 Mexican Wolves are known to exist and these are only in captivity. Wolves are not bad -- they are predators necessary in our world to help balance nature. Some people never realize how important predators are until it is almost too late. A good example is this; medieval Europe decided cats were evil and had most of them killed. The rat population increased and the Black Plague was spread through the masses by the rodents. Once the cats were reintroduced into society, the rats were killed and the plague all but disappeared. This is what can happen when man disturbs the ecosystems. The fear that this animal would slaughter thousands of livestock in the Southwest is what led ranchers and the government funded Animal Damage Control to kill the wolves. Their methods were far from humane and they still are killing other wolves and predators at an alarming rate. But there are groups trying to help the Mexican and other wolves make a comeback in the world. The WCSRC leases 50 acres from the Tyson Research Center for a nominal fee, The whole Tyson area encompasses 2000 acres and is owned and operated by Washington University in St. Louis. The WCSRC operates separately from the university. Here in New Mexico a noble experiment has been started with the reintroduction of the Mexican gray wolf. Even though they would be able to get better results if the local ranchers would stop shooting them, research continues. The Game and Fish department had been told the ranchers did not want them turned loose near their live stock. When the wolf is introduced to St Louis I'm sure the coyote problem in Ladue will be taken care of and the rest of the rat problem that has plagued the area for many generations. Coyotes first, Rats second. We'll think of something later for the wolves. So rest easy St Louis, no more Cholera, black plague and the rest of the miasmas that have tormented us for centuries. However do keep an eye on the kiddies while at play.----Jim

This is a link that discusses the difference in naming a year between the various calendars that were used. I found out on the list I was on that Scotland did not adopt the same calendar England used. (Really confusing!) So, in case any one cares...here is a link that is sure to make your eyes spin. Gee I wonder what year it really is?!

    2. rbozzay
    3. Just a bit of information to all list members. Anything like that will bounce to either Michelle or myself, which ever of us is the administrator of record. It will not get through to our list unless we release it to the list manually. So the email had to be directed to you personally and not through the list. I do see spam trying to hit the list from time to time. Any messages trying to be posted to the list hit Michelle or me first. We contact the person to make sure they are not a spammer (if they are the email will bounce) and invite them to join the list and post the note if it is on topic. If they don't want to do that but are legitimate we will forward. You have seen this happen very infrequently. RootsWeb also runs an anti spam filter that catches a lot of this stuff before it ever gets to us. Yeah! So keep those "On Topic" emails going and don't worry about spam from the list. One other thing, if someone subscribes and starts sending spam...you know we are going to contact that person off list. You also know if they don't adhere to the guidelines we will take action because spam is something we will need to stop and stop quickly. I am sure you all understand why. Back to genealogy.... 3. Cholera might also be spread by flies. My great grandfather was a minister and during a cholera epidemic in Tennessee, went into a cholera camp outside Nashville where he and his wife nursed the sick people. The story is that he and his wife cooked their food over an open fire (they slept in their covered wagon) and ate it right away while it was still hot and before any flies could get on it. 2. I knew someone could give us Paludal information on rats. Laura's the gold cup winner so far.----Jim -------------------------------------------------------------- I think the rats and mice spread other diseases but maybe not cholera during that time. They may be guilty by association because they live in drains and sewers and in wet marshy areas quite a bit and that is a source of bad water and cholera. Hope this helps. Laura

    1. Re: [StL-Metro] Cholera: Information from Official sources
    2. George Ude
    3. O.K. This is from the CDC: What is cholera? Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but sometimes it can be severe. Approximately one in 20 infected persons has severe disease characterized by profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps. In these persons, rapid loss of body fluids leads to dehydration and shock. Without treatment, death can occur within hours. How does a person get cholera? A person may get cholera by drinking water or eating food contaminated with the cholera bacterium. In an epidemic, the source of the contamination is usually the feces of an infected person. The disease can spread rapidly in areas with inadequate treatment of sewage and drinking water. The cholera bacterium may also live in the environment in brackish rivers and coastal waters. Shellfish eaten raw have been a source of cholera, and a few persons in the United States have contracted cholera after eating raw or undercooked shellfish from the Gulf of Mexico. The disease is not likely to spread directly from one person to another; therefore, casual contact with an infected person is not a risk for becoming ill.

    3. Dear Lisa, I have not gotten this type of email but I think that I saw something about Ancestry notifying me when one of the names that I put under their "I may be related" or whatever they are calling it now classification. I just looked at the website and it was under "My Ancestry" tab. It says "How does this work? We will search Ancestry.com's databases for the people in your list. When we find matches, we'll notify you by e-mail." Georgia PS I don't think you can reply to any of their email unless it is the one from "Sean" at the RightNow@ancestry.com This will probably change. While looking at my 189 emails that I started keeping track of from them, the contact address seems to change periodically.
