    3. Dear Barbara, The St. Louis PUBLIC Library has lots of genealogical "stuff" available by email request and a great staff. http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/libsrc/geneinfo.htm CAtholic church records are available at the St. Louis COUNTY library and through the Mormon church. Diane Shaw's Irish in St. Louis website has lots of links for info other than Irish. http://members.gtw.net/%7Eseamus/Irshnstl.htm Dave Lossos' website for genealogy has some church records for other denominations. http://genealogyinstlouis.accessgenealogy.com/ Georgia Barbara Byrd wrote: > Thanks for the ideas shared. 3. I have scanned thousands of my best photos and slides and saved them to regular CD's. That makes it easy to share photos with other family members and then the CD's can be played via a newer DVD player to the TV set in a slide show. We don't print out new photos anymore we just view our photos on the TV but if we wish to print one its easy. Also printing photos can be disappointing because if you are not using a good printer, ink and paper they can fade quickly. See this report by PC World http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,111767,00.asp Another method of capturing old photos or anything in print is to use your digital camera rather than a scanner. When I visit a genealogy library I always have my camera so I can take photos of whatever records I might find. 3. Thank you Laura, I've not thought of researching Tesson. It was Overton Byrd who married Martha Tesson. Overton's son Hampton moved his family to Texas in the mid 1870's. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Shopping - with improved product search http://shopping.yahoo.com

I have been scanning them and to make sure they are not lost, am sending them to relatives all over the U.S. Thank you so much for sharing your information. Frances

    1. [StL-Metro] Fall genealogy projects
    2. rbozzay
    3. With the weather changing and the Holidays approaching many of us will start thinking about doing "something" with all the genealogy stuff we have accumulated. Some of us have written books for our families Some have done photo albums (Joan and Jerry's last postings got me thinking about this) Some have done rooms dedicated to their heritage with ethnic themes. If someone on the list has done something really special to hand down the research they have done on their families, I invite you to share what you did (without an advertising for any specific products of course) An example would be my map collection that I put together for my husband. He loves maps. So I began looking in all sorts of places, antique stores, flea markets, old text books, auction houses / sites for maps (current and actual maps from the time period) that showed the parts of the world, Missouri, and St. Louis our ancestors lived in. When the family all gathers that map album is one of the first thing someone grabs and starts looking at. Seems like someone finds something new every time. All I did was buy an oversized photo album and those acid free conservation style pages. I typed up some heading on my computer...printed them and then slipped the maps into the photo sheets where I had placed the pages with the headings. This is a relatively easy project as even antique maps from the 1800s are often available for under $20 (I got some for under $5) and they are really conversation pieces in themselves. Another example would be to take photos of the areas where your ancestors lived. (Use caution if the area has deteriorated into something that is just not safe to go to). I used disposable cameras for this project (they are light weight, come with zooms now and are very inexpensive and they took very good pictures of things like houses and streets and schools. In some cases the house no longer existed so I would shoot the area to get a more full street shot. One of the men I work with brought in a book his mother created for her children last year. He is a newly wed and this was a present to his wife. It gave family group sheets on everyone in the family (living) and also the genealogy of the family she had married into. She also gave a certificate to her daughter-in-law to provide 100 hours of research for her to start researching her side of the family. (I thought that was really cool! So now the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law have a hobby they can share and get to know each other in a better way...I have done this sort of in reverse with my mother-in-law who is recently retired and she is having a ball researching her side of the family). Diane Shaw and I have talked about getting together this fall to go visit some older churches in the area. All denominations. I have the 1863 St. Louis Directory and plan to print out the church listings. I think it will be fun to do this (plan to take along disposable cameras) and this could be fun to share. If any of you have some project that you think would be of interest to others on the list or are looking for a "research buddy" feel free to share that with the list. Just make sure to keep this within the guidelines of the rootsweb AUP (acceptable use policy..i.e.: no advertising or selling) and on topic to the Missouri / Metro St. Louis list guidelines. Laura

    1. Re: [StL-Metro] Recommendations for Old Family Photos
    2. rbozzay
    3. Jerry, great answer! Joan that is wonderful!!! Just for those who may not have a scanner or are not very computer savvy, I am enclosing some links to sites that deal with preserving photographs. They will be at the bottom of my response. Another thing you might consider with a few of them is to have them "digitally copied" by a photo studio. The digitally copied images can be electronically touched up so you get rid of fading, cracks, tears, etc. This can get costly but if it is really special picture you may want it professionally redone. A cheaper alternative that might have very good results is if you have a techy teen in your family they might also know how to do this. I have done it myself on a few photos in my family. It is time consuming but there might be one or two really special pictures that you want to do this with and then have a few copies made so you can hang one on the wall. Also if you ask for a CD with jpgs of the photos you can email them to all your friends and relatives. One last idea...many of the community schools have photo workshops. It might be a fun class to take! Here are the links I promised. http://www.uni.edu/petersog/icpctip5.html http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/6662/photopre.htm#clean there is a section about cleaning and preserving in this long text about storing, keeping, cleaning and preserving photos http://www.cyndislist.com/photos.htm Good luck! 3. I agree with only one exception, writing on the backs can bleed through, damage the originals, I scan and use the writing tool and write the info beside / under each photo, then print. Some I have were written on yrs ago by the orig. owners, I like to put the in new Acid free albums with the information on little sm.tab lables with each picture / also number them in a safe spot to reference picture with tabs.Make sure all materials are acid free.I create and put my copies in page covers for each person along with all documents relating to persons. From a scan I cut out and make a collage of each family group also .Alot of work but I like having a person with his family.
