    1. [StL-Metro] GENTECH starting Today! (Friday)
    2. John W Konvalinka
    3. The official start of NGS GENTECH 2004 is today, Friday 23 January at the Millenium Hotel in downtown St. Louis. Since 1993, GENTECH has been THE national conference for people interested in GENealogy and TECHnology. Now, as a new division of the National Genealogical Society, NGS GENTECH will sponsor conferences that continue to meet the needs of advanced users and those new to using technology in research. At the Librarians pre conference day yesterday (Thursday) there were a large number of walk in registrations -- for the Librarians' meetings, the afternoon workshops and the remainder of the conference. It kept the volunteers scurrying to find enough tote bags to meet the demand (they found more, fortunately.) Today promises to be another busy day, so hurry on down. The program is posted at: www.eshow2000.com/ngsgentech/register_now.cfm or at the St. Louis Genealogical Society website: www.stlgs.org/gentech2004. If you can't join us today, come tomorrow (Saturday). There will be another full day of programs and events at the exhibit hall. As the song goes "Meet me in St. Louis..." for an exciting genealogy program. John Konvalinka, CGRS(sm), CGL(sm) NGS GENTECH 2004 Publicity Chair www.konvalinka.com

    1. [StL-Metro] Naturalization Records
    2. We could have had this conversation before, but I couldn't find it in the archives. How trustworthy is the information on a naturalization record? For example, the birth information? That information was relayed directly from the person being naturalized, to the person taking the information, right? Or, was it all done via paper (person being naturalized filled out the paper and sent it in/handed it in, etc.) and there is room for error (this is the era of 1905-1910)? What about the witnesses? What role did they play, exactly? Did they have to be there with them? Did they just have to sign their name? And, what was their purpose? Was it to verify that these people were "stand-up" citizens, or that their name really was what they said, or what? (Sorry...so many questions! I just found my first Naturalization Record that I have needed, thus far...) Thanks for any insight! Michelle muesic1@aol.com

    2. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Dear Listers - I am in the process of writing an account of my family's connection with the old Quick Meal/American Stove Company in St. Louis and would like to contact anyone who may have had relatives that worked for these companies prior to the 1920's, at either the Chouteau Avenue or Kingshighway/Dagget Avenue plants. My purpose for this request is that I would like to find any narrative accounts, and in particular any photographs, that may be be available. Thanks for your help. 3. Dear Dan, If you do not have access to the 1900 census, you can request a lookup by the St. Louis Public Library. See following website for information: http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/libsrc/geneinfo.htm Click on item # 5 for a list of what is available and then go back and click on "Reference Desk (item #). Or, ask for a lookup in the city directories if you have already searched the 1900 censuses for him. Another SLPL site has a history or biography of several of the Buschs. Maybe something in there can help. Think the library will make copies. http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/libsrc/hyde1.htm#B Georgia Dan Hogan wrote: > Many thanks for those on these two St Louis lists who replied to my > inquiry. 1. [StL-Metro] The McQuillen Saga
    2. THE END. The McQuillen Saga in finished and complete. Three hundred and forty pages is now ready for the Editor/Reviewer. While this horror story begins at the Garden of Eden you will be surprised to know that it did not begin with brother Cain, it began with brother Seth and flows down through the ages through some very notable biblical characters. Adam Seth Enos Jared Enoch Methuselah Lamech Noah Japhet Magog Baoth Fenius "the Antiquary" (King of Scythia) Nial or Niul (mar. Scota, dau. Pharao Cingris, King of Egypt) During the period of 1200 to 1600 AD the McQuillens kept them selves busy with their wars, jousting, tax collecting, pillaging, building and other interesting activities. One day they were fighting with the McDonnells, the next marrying a McDonnell and no one seemed to know what started it all. Finally, with help from the English, the McDonnells were granted title to the McQuillens land in 1586. And those were only a few of the folks that paved the way for the latter day family. I'm sure everyone will agree with me that if those confounded McDonnells hadn't started meddeling I may have ended up the King of Ireland. Oh well, everyone knows life can be cruel. Be aware that the book is no longer the McQuillen Saga, that was only a part of the over all tale. The book as of today has been named, "Don't Blame Me." Now all I have to do is find a publisher.----Jim

    1. [StL-Metro] Anheuser Busch estate
    2. Dan Hogan
    3. Many thanks for those on these two St Louis lists who replied to my inquiry. Prior to asking, I did some research and according to the Grants Farm website fact sheet, as well as several Anheuser-Busch websites and a site sent to me by Betty about the history of a Compton Heights address, Grants Farm (216 acres) was purchased by August A. Busch Sr, in 1903 and not developed into his estate until 1913. Prior to that date, a stable for the horses was constructed in 1885, but cannot find that location's name, or specific place. The Compton Heights address simply states that a property was purchaed by Busch in 1893, but does not say why. Many properties were purchased by the Busch family for many reasons so this may be difficult to find out where the horses were prior to the 1903 purchase of Grants Farm. According to my research, my great-grandfather was the foreman/horseshoer for the estate in the 1880's-1907? His son, my grandfather, was born in a cottage on the estate in 1894. I would like to find them in the 1900 census. With the info I researched as well as the info I received from list members, my ancestors had to have lived somewhere other than Grants Farm prior to 1903 and maybe even 1913 when supposedly it was developed into the new estate. Some of you mention another estate on the grounds of the brewery. This may have been the place used prior to 1903-1913 for the horses. What ward would this have been in 1900? Greg mentions an older Busch estate out by the Sunset County Club. What was this place called in the 19th century? Does is predate the above places? My great-grandfather was supposedly mean to the clydesdales, there are even stories that have been handed down through several family branches about his cruelty, he even supposedly knocked one out cold! Thanks all, Dan Hogan

    3. I do generally identify photos when I get them back from developing. The times I've neglected to do this or when the film was still in the camera from last year's vacation, I've been very annoyed with myself. I identify all people, pets, places and dates. When my first child was born, I came across "The Grandparents' Book" in the bookstore. It has prompts which help you tell your life story, which may not be interesting to you, but could well be fascinating to your grandchildren. My mom is 71 and has been talking all her life but I only started listening these past ten years. I've already heard stories from her childhood but it's good to record them because I may not be around to relate them to my grandchildren. These "life stories" also give the reader a feel for what life was like in the good old days. I'm sure my girls, or even I, could not imagine what is was like to wake up in an unheated room in the middle of winter, or to have to go outside to go to the bathroom. My mom also talks about coming home from school and spreading the cream that collected on top of the milk on a piece of bread and sprinkling it with sugar for a snack. She also has pictures of "threshing" and her father driving a team of mules down Manchester Rd. when it was a tiny two-lane road with houses right next to it. Things sure have changed! 2. Cori Brendle
    3. When my dad died four days before Christmas in 2000, I was shocked at some of the things I found among his belongings, but none moreso than his discharge papers from the Army. While he had always told everyone that he was discharged as a Private First Class, in reality he was honorably discharged as a full sergeant. And yet, though I have no idea why he never told me, I hold no animosity - it was his life, and he had no obligation to do so, no matter how much I would like to have known the real story. On the other hand, a couple of years before he died he DID tell me about the house his grandfather built in 1902, which prompted me to look for and find it following his death. I was grateful for the knowledge, and for the kindness and hospitality of the couple who now own the house, as it gave me a sense of connection that I had not even known I was lacking. So many things our relatives and friends never tell us are in no way a reflection of their trust in us, so much as a reflection of what may simply never have occurred to them as important to tell us. Which is why it is so very important to question those still with us, lest their histories die with them.
