    1. [StL-Metro] Online Searchable Death Indexes & Records
    2. McAuliffe, R. Emmett
    3. "Online Searchable Indexes & Records" This is what I am about more than anything else. Finding these databases and exhorting, lobbying and working for more. The chances of getting a "hit" from a roll call or an inquiry about such and such a ship, street, cemetery, what have you, is very remote. I don't have time either to sift through feature articles about the hobby of genealogy. In this spirit, I present the link below. It is from a list of Genealogy for Dummies. I guess I am a Dummy because from going to this list I found out two things I didn't know from all the other lists I subscribe to: 1) That the St. Louis Probate Court Digitization Project was now up to 1900. 2) That the Missouri State Archives Pre-1909 Birth & Death Records now include St. Louis, which they didn't for a long time before. THIS ARCHIVE HAS DATA FOR SOME REASON NOT CONTAINED IN ANCESTRY.COM's FOR-PAY "St. Louis City Death Records, 1850-1908". http://www.deathindexes.com/missouri/index.html Here is the original email I got from Genealogy for Dummies: (a genealogy guide) http://www.deathindexes.com/ Recent additions include new links for: California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio & Tennessee. All 50 states are represented - some have many links, while others have just one or two.

    3. Hi Pat: This was all Ancestry had in StL - obviously no census. I did find a Mathias Kroupa listed in a "Dead Letter" notice from the Traverse City Post Office, in the Grand Traverse Herald dated 19 Apr 1883. Perhaps he lived there prior to St. Louis? If so, he probably came by train thriugh Chicago. Slavic name? Did you check the Ellis Island page? 2. Gary Stoltman
    3. Hi Linda: Nothing on Rudolph but there was a William Stecher who was a teacher of gymnastics for the St. Louis Turner Society (Tuurnerverien) in the 1890s. The building was located on Chouteau as of 1889 - (the cross street is not known). The Society's original building was on 10th St. There is quite a bit of information on the Rudolph Stecher Brewery on the Net. 3. That poem is so very, very true. My sister and I just spent at least 4 mos clearing out my mother's mobile home, etc.. We found package after package of photos, negatives, etc. Maybe 1/2 of them had any notation, information! Besides everyone, memories fade, people die, etc. What we all would have given for just simple information. I found a picture of my paternal gm's uncle and his wife. Just a note "Oscar and wife." We had no idea where the photo was taken or even a date. Mother always said that was going to make an album, etc. She is living in a senior citizens housing apt complex. It will be up to my sister to help her identify the people. Even if she could, I wouldn't be there. Many of the photos are of family, friends and happy times. As I heard once, "Life happens while you are making other plans." 3. Here's another kind of warning from Robert Ragan's E-zine....how many of us still don't heed the message? Diane T. mzplum_2000@yahoo.com Strangers in the Box by Pam Harazim >From article in Robert Ragan's TREASURE MAPS Genealogy E-zine "In 1997, I authored the poem titled, 'Strangers in the Box'. I originally wrote the poem when my mother had dementia, and I realized that the stories she loved to tell me about her youth and her family were locked inside her, and I didn't remember them like I was so sure I always would. Hence, the 'box of strangers'." STRANGERS IN THE BOX Come, look with me inside this drawer, In this box I've often seen, At the pictures, black and white, Faces proud, still, serene. I wish I knew the people, These strangers in the box, Their names and all their memories Are lost among my socks. I wonder what their lives were like. How did they spend their days? What about their special times? I'll never know their ways. If only someone had taken time To tell who, what, where, when, These faces of my heritage Would come to life again. Could this become the fate Of the pictures we take today? The faces and the memories Someday to be tossed away? Make time to save your pictures, Seize the opportunity when it knocks, Or someday you and yours could be The strangers in the box. (Pam Harazim, East Hampton, CT) Copyright 1997 by Pamela A. Harazim. 1. [StL-Metro] Virus warning.....
    2. Diane T
    3. Hi Listers, I received this E-zine today, and wanted to share this....to prevent someone from picking up a virus. Diane T. mzplum_2000@yahoo.com WARNING to Genealogy Researchers! (From Robert Ragan's TREASURE MAPS Genealogy E-zine) -------------------------------------------- This topic has been mentioned in past issues, but you won't believe this one... The viruses that are attached to e-mail messages are getting more deceptive than ever. This message is dangerous because it is compelling to genealogy researchers. The attachment was named 'hills.com' BUT... this was no link to a Web site; it was a link to a nasty virus-in-waiting. Here it is: >SUBJECT: She began her sojourn on this earth. >Born as Ruth McCoury to Scotch-English parents, >she was baptized as an infant in the Southern >Presbyterian Church. She remembers with fondness >her parents as being good, devout people. The >family moved...(continues) This is very deceptive and is becoming common of most viruses that come with these 'strange' e-mail messages. The person who receives it goes, 'Hmmm....I wonder what this is' and clicks on it. If I had clicked on this attachment (which looked like a link to a site) it would have unleashed the virus on my computer. However, I knew that it was a virus and deleted it, so there was no harm done, but I know that many people would fall for this one (I had to think about it myself). There is an article that I wrote that tells about these viruses, but more important, shows you where you can do a free virus scan on-line and find and delete any of these pesky attachments. Even if you have virus protection software, unless you updated it often, it may miss some of the latest viruses. Don't be scared and stop using your e-mail for genealogy research. Be careful and be educated. PLEASE read and print this article. It may be a big help to you: http://amberskyline.com/freescan/ --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. Dear Marge, The St. Louis Public Library will do a look up and make copies for a small fee to cover the cost of the copies and postage. http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/libsrc/geneinfo.htm Click on #5 to see what is available and then go back and click on "Reference Desk" in item # 13 to email your request. The library has lots of good stuff and a wonderful staff. I live in Michigan and this has been an enormous resource-and cheap.
