    3. Beautiful German Catholic Gothic Church on Sarpy ave. torn down in the early 60s to build the Vandeventer overpass I believe. A German friend of mine use to complain that they tore down a beautiful well-made German church and saved the nearby "shanty Irish ramshackle church" St. Cronan's. Of course 90% of Catholic churches today look "ramshackle" to me. 1. [StL-Metro] Bunselmeyer and variants
    2. Marsha Ensminger
    3. I found a new surname married into the Westerholt family - Bunselmeyer. Is anyone researching this name, or any variant thereof? The Westerholt involved was Emma H., b. about 1871 in Missouri (probably City of St. Louis). In her father's probate file (1899), she's referred to as Emma Bunselmeyer, a married woman. In the 1930 census I find Henry and Emma Bunselmeier, ages 56 and 58, living on Cleveland Ave. in the City. The age is appropriate for my Emma. Would anyone be able to provide an entry from the 1900 or 1910 St. Louis censuses? (I'm still looking in 1920). Thank you. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 1. [StL-Metro] Re: [StLouis-MO] St. Bernards Catholic Church??
    2. Judy, Dave Lossos's website Genealogy in St. Louis has a wonderful link to Early (pre-1900) St. Louis Places of Worship which is a wonderful first stop for almost any questions about specific churches in St. Louis:) < http://genealogyinstlouis.accessgenealogy.com/earlychurches.htm> >From Dave's site: St. Bernard Church Catholic (German) The west-central part of the city was predominantly Irish, but even here St. Bernard Church gave a slight touch of the Rhineland to the upper Mill Creek Valley. St. Bernard's parish was dismembered in 1885 to create St. Henry Church parish and again in 1892 to form that of St. Aloysius Church. Closed, records are now at St. Cronan Church. Located at 4019 Gratiot Street, (63110) 1874 - 1973 (razed) Church records from St. Bernard have been microfilmed by the LDS. If you put in the film # 1887677 in the Film/Fiche Search box on the Library Catalog page <www.familysearch.com> if will bring up all the records available on microfilm for that church. Although their roof was destroyed by fire several years ago, St. Anthony of Padua is still a thriving parish. The dates given would seem to be correct, but I would think records would still be in their possession. If not, they certainly wouldn't have been given to St. Raymond's. Now the confusion sets in. There was another Catholic church established on the near south side in 1898. Those still living who remember refer to it as St. Anthony of the Desert, but in every document generated during it's existence I've found it called St. Anthony the Hermit. This church had several locations, the final one being closed and torn down in the 40's to make room for the Darst-Webbe housing project. It was their records that were given to St. Raymond's. Neither St. Anthony the Hermit nor St. Raymond's are/were part of the St. Louis Archdiocese. They are/were Maronite (Eastern Rite) Catholic not Roman Catholic. To my knowledge, their records were never microfilmed and aren't found among those held at the county library.... Unfortunately, St. Raymond's experienced a fire which destroyed almost all the early records of both churches. For several years I've been researching these Lebanese immigrants, and have amassed about 50,000 records of them and their descendants. But the absence of church records has left a gaping hole, and I continually hope a previously unknown copy will surface. Don't know how good it is. http://translation2.paralink.com/ If that doesn't work, try a school or college near you that might have a German language class or contact a local genealogy society to see if they might know of someone. 3. I have used and had some success with http://www.freetranslation.com/ It is a free service for the machine translation. Those can be a bit rough but you can usually get the idea of what the person is saying. They do have a fee site if you want to pay for translation. But I have had success with doing the machine translation and then where it doesn't make perfect sense, go to a dictionary for that language and see if there are alternate words that might work better. You can copy in a good amount of text at one time. Good luck! 3. Does anyone have any thoughts about the st. Louis genealogical Society? I just got my membership renewal notice. $28 for an individual membership seems a little steep. Especially after my wife has already climbed on my back about my Ancestry.com bill. But at least with Ancestry you get something tangible. Does anyone know what the tangible benefits of SLGS are? I am kind of wishing they would be more pro-active in getting volunteers together on these Obituary indices. The whole area of death indices need some work too, it seems to me. Do you have to be a member to use the headquarters resources? (I've only used the HQ for a total of 30 minutes the whole time I have been there.) One of my ancestors qualifies for one of their three award categories (not the earliest one, he came in 1830s). One of these days I am going to get around to submitting my qualifications for that. Does anyone know if you have to be a SLGS member for that? Thanks R. Emmett McAuliffe
