The CRINNIONs owned some property on Green Street at 20th in 1860s. They were stone and brick masons in the 1850-1910 era. I have never been able to find it on Mapquest but that would explain it if Union Station was built there. Hi Elizabeth: Found no evidence of a brickyard that far east using the 1875 StL Piictorial. I would agree that Cheltenham area would probably be your best bet. The clay to make brick was taken from the Cheltenham/Fairmount/Sulpher Springs area (in the area of the first Pacific RR Station) starting in the 1840s and became the prime source of brick used after the Great Fire of 1849. Per "Lion of the Valley," English Quakers started digging there about 1840. You mention Union Station - prior to this 1896 [?] station, there was the 'Union Depot' located at 12th & Poplar. Where did he board? See "The Clay Mines and Factories in Cheltenham/Dogtown . . ." (and all of St. Louis) by Lois Schmidt http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/dogtown/history/schmidt/schmidt4.html Good hunting Gary Stoltman Mercerville, NJ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elizabeth Gerber" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 12:01 PM Subject: RE: [MO-STLOUIS-METRO] Old St Louis brickyards > So I asked for list-help with this question in 2003. Dear Elizabeth, Check the business section of the City Directories for brick yards. If you do not have access to the city directories, contact the St. Louis Public Library. http://www.slpl.lib.mo.us/libsrc/geneinfo.htm Georgia Elizabeth Gerber wrote: > So I asked for list-help with this question in 2003. Sorry for the confusion about the Gale website, folks. I checked it and got in and then sent the message to the list. I didn't know that the offer was going to expire the same day I posted it to the list. I did continue to get through using a cached copy of the page until they actually changed the password. While I was in there, I got some info from an on line book about Kentucky. Gale is the company that offers Ancestry Plus to libraries. Their resources are not exactly the same as Ancestry has for its home users. I have used Ancestry at home and not found certain directory listing and then used Ancestry Plus at the library and found more directory listings than were available through Ancestry at home. So, if you are not checking Ancestry at your library because you have it at home, you might want to use the library's version as well. The two resources are much the same, but not exactly the same. So I asked for list-help with this question in 2003. Now I have found out that my info was slightly askew. My ancestor worked at a brickyard that was where they built Union Station. How can I find out what brickyard might have existed in the 1850s/1860s/1870s around the Market/18th/Clark/20th area ? So far Directories for the ancestor have only listed where he boarded; not where he worked. Any leads would be greatly appreciated !! I was curious if someone who lived in that area could take a few pictures of some houses. They used to be my family's back in the late 1800's and early 1900's. ----- Original Message ----- From: Laura Edgar<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 18, 2005 8:22 PM Subject: Re: [MO-STLOUIS-METRO] Lee Webster Groves I found LEE in Webster Groves, close to Rock Hill Rd. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Doerr" <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> To: <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Sent: Monday, April 18, 2005 5:07 PM Subject: Re: [MO-STLOUIS-METRO] Lee Webster Groves >I lived in Webster Groves in the 1930s and was a letter carrier in Webster > Groves in the 1940s and recall no Lee. > > Bob Doerr in the beautiful Missouri Ozarks > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Andrew Davis" <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> > To: <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> > Sent: Monday, April 18, 2005 10:45 AM > Subject: [MO-STLOUIS-METRO] Lee Webster Groves > > >> Does anyone here live near a street named Lee in Webster Groves?
