The “C.S.P.S.” Cesko-Slovanské Podporující Spolecností ( Bohemian Slavonic Benevolent Society ) The “C.S.P.S.” or Cesko-Slovanské Podporující Spolecností was founded in St. Louis, Missouri on March 4th, 1854. The founders of this society were the early Czech immigrants, who’s brethren had fled the revolts and political oppression of the 1840s and 1850s. This group was comprised mostly of farmers and laborers with limited skills and poorly educated since School attendance was not yet mandatory in the Slavic Kingdoms. These founding fathers of the C.S.P.S. were intent on forming a Organization to provide assistance to their countrymen in times of illness, and care for the widows and orphans. Hi Gene: You didn't mention the year. The Slovaks/ Czechs started coming to StL about 1865-70. Most didn't stay but there is a Slovak community there.Unfortunately, there is a lot of source information but it hasn't been translated, per an article by Tim Fox - "Where the Czech's Are is my Home." Hi Ranee: Seems like I haven't "seen" you in a while? Personally, I'm simply interested in Kamphoefner's speech since he will speak on the history of the German presence in StL. The question is - which speech will he give - why they left - the journey - the settlement, etc.? For those of you who are sending these emails (like the ones below) to the list, you reference your German ancestors in St Louis, but you don't tell us WHO THEY WERE! Very tantalizing but no help at all in solving brick walls. Try putting your ancestors names in CAPS after your signature, or in the subject line of your email--that way, we can all spot some out-of-the-area "kinfolks" when they show up! Thanks! Jim: I work close to those neighborhoods, and you should be okay if you go during the day. The morning is usually better because the real troublemakers are not out yet. But I would not be there at night. I work in Fairgrounds Park and am white and female. The Kossuth Address is probably a rebuilt neighborhood, the original houses are probably not there. The Gano address is pretty run down, but not too dangerous. If Robin is on the east side of Calvary Cemetery, it is pretty nice. If it is on the west side, I would be more careful. St. Louis Avenue is experiencing a whole lot of rebuilding. There may be a lot of empty lots about the 4200 block. Farlin is probably in a pretty well kept up section. Sullivan Avenue is just south of Fairgrounds Park, but that is farther east than I usually travel. The Pope address is in a pretty stable neighborhood. Hope this helps. Marsha
Yeah I would stay clear entirely of neighborhoods like that. I have always never felt safe in those kinds of areas. I have been lucky that most of my ancestors houses that are still up from the St. Louis area are in Webster Groves. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, May 08, 2005 12:53 AM Subject: Re: [MO-STLOUIS-METRO] Housing in St. Louis Jim, I see some addresses that I recognize.
