Does anyone on the list know anything of the GANNING surname in St. Louis? Would it be Irish? I am looking for informaton on Ann Ganning who was married in 1839 to Jerome Crely. If anyone on list is researching this family, please email me. I was also wondering if they had children. I find lots of information, but have never been able to find anything much on the Ganning line. It is possible the name is being spelled differently. I have checked a lot of resources so far. thanks Pat

I've just finished the transcription of data of the 12,985 people that are referenced in Stevens' "St. Louis: The Fourth City, 1764-1909". Volume one (1132 pages) tells of St. Louis history. Volumes two (1082 pages) and three (1063 pages) are totally genealogical in nature. I have completed both Volume II and III (2145 pages), and have entered everyone mentioned into a genealogical software database. Doing so allows for a standard index and also a family tree of each and every person. These 12,985 are grouped into 3954 marriages and have 3515 unique surnames. Also, when listed, I've added fields for individual's home addresses and church affiliations. This database is at the top of my "Genealogy in St. Louis" website, and it's entitled "Notable St. Louis Genealogies". Is anyone on the list researching or know anything of the family of Dr. Hugh P Mack and his wife Frances? Hugh died in 1921 and Frances dies age 95 in 1959. I have them living at 4001 Lincoln Ave in St. Louis in 1910 and 1920. They had 2 daughters - Zoe who married Arch Zilch and If I have calculated right, she lived to be 105 and died in 1991. The other daughter may have been Rose-Margaret and married William Nunn I have 4 Zilch children, but cannot find much on them, with the longevity in tht family, maybe a couple of them still living?? I think the oldest may have been born in 1914. I also have 4 Nunn children, but 3 are dead for sure. I have nothing on Joe Mack Nunn. born in 1904 I would be interested in any copies of pictures if they exist. thanks Pat
I just uploaded a new lot of old St. Louis postcards that I added to my collection. Some pretty fascinating views. Really makes history come alive seeing people going about their daily lives captured in these antique cards. Among my new acquistions is a real photo of a half sunken steamboat being boarded by curiousity seekers. The identification of this vessel is a mystery. The boat name seems to be "Gunderson", which is inscribed beneath image. Appears to be the Mississippi, north of Alton, but that is a guess. Other new acquistions are a few new Illinois cards for Alton and East St. Louis. A real photo of Meramec Highlands, showing the resort and Frisco railroad track (this is present day Kirkwood). An early view of University City when it was on the edge of the forested countryside. I'll be adding new catagories, like Hotels/ Churches / Asylums/ Hospitals in the near future. I also have a lot of Jefferson Barracks cards to scan. (But that will have to wait until I get more time.) Feel free to enjoy the new views I have just uploaded. --Scott Williams Antique Metro St. Louis Postcard Collection http://www.stlouistimeportal.com/
From another List - FYI ==================== Subject: [IL-CENTRAL] Genealogy Help We all know a lot about genealogy but sometimes we miss the basics. And we can all learn more. You can never know it all about genealogy. The internet is full of free genealogy resources. Take some time to polish your skills. I'm sure there are many sites with useful information but here are a couple all inclusive sites. I'll bet if you just scan the sites you'll find one or two things you didn't know -- and maybe something to set you on a new path to breaking down a brick wall. http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/ http://www.genealogy.com/genehelp.html
Can someone give me the URL for the on-line registers that had been scanned of Immanuel Lutheran church in St Louis City? I seem to have lost it. This site is not the same as the County Library which has the INDEX to the Immanuel Church books. The site I am looking for where actual pages from the original books generously shared by the women who had scanned them. LaVerne
Thanks, Dave, for your reply. I sent my requests through the US Mail, each in a separate letter. I know that they received them because they cashed each one of my checks. I thought that maybe since they deposited the money, I would be hearing from them shortly. I just sent them an e-mail, giving each check number, dollar amount and name of the deceased on each death cert. Also let them know that each of the payments were cashed by the State of MO. I just asked as to how I might obtain the document copies that I had ordered. I was pretty nice and sweet about it. I don't expect the hear from them for about 5 days.....then I'll inquire once again, I guess. Thanks again for your reply. I've ordered death certificates by mail a few times and the time to process the requests varied between two and eight weeks. This was when the certificates were with the Dept. of Health. I would say that current delays may have something to do with the transfer of certificates to the Archives and their project to digitize the records. Another reason could be that they have been besieged with requests since the price of old certificates dropped from $13 to $1. What I know for certain is this: I emailed a request on August 11th and a reply only came this week. Additionally, you may want to review their mail and email policy, if that's how you ordered the records. It states: "Submit only one request and allow us to complete your research before submitting others." (http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/email.asp) I take that to mean one certificate at a time. "In-house patrons who search the death indexes may request up to ten records at a time; those requests must be fulfilled before additional requests can be made." "Currently, it is not possible to provide immediate service for those patrons wishing to access the death certificates. The records are not easily accessible and various preservation and security measures must be taken before full service is instituted at the Missouri State Archives for in-house visitors, online researchers, and postal mail requests. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but assure all patrons that this valuable collection will be made available as soon as possible." http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/birthdeath/deathFAQ.asp Dave > Date: Fri, 14 Oct 2005 16:35:05 +0000 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Message-Id: <10142005[email protected]comcast.net> > Subject: Ordering Xerox copies of death certs > > I ordered 4 xerox copies of death certs from the MO state offices in Jeff City, > each at a cost of $1, in the middle of August. Georgia, I sent 7 separate checks to the State offices, each mailed in it's own envelope for each of the xerox copies. The state has cashed those checks on 8/24. That has showed up on my bank statement. Just wondering if I should write another letter with copies of the cashed checks and a listing of each death cert? Or e-mail them with the particulars. I don't want to appear hostile, but I think that since they have my money and it's been over 6 weeks since the checks cleared, I should have heard something. I had all facts written for them, there would be no extensive searching. Sharon > Dear Sharon, > > Did your check clear the bank? I seem to have had some rotten luck when I write > to Missouri. Dear Sharon, I would email them with the particulars rather than making copies. I had a death certificate go astray from the City of St. Louis. Apparently, the Post Office read my zip code for some place in Maryland. Took 5 weeks to get to me. In the meantime, I had called the vital records department and they sent out another copy right away. I don't remember having any problem with the State archives but then, since it was August when you made your request, maybe they were short handed or the regular person was on vacation. Dear Sharon, I would e-mail them with the information if I were you. The Xeroxes may well have been misdirected by the Post Office. Yesterday we received a change of address for Skowhegan, Maine in our mail and it should have gone to the Post Office there. It was mailed from Skowhegan to Skowhegan, but it may have gotten stuck in a newspaper we get from Maine. If they cashed your checks in August, you certainly should have the information by now. Use the Post Office as a possible reason for your not receiving them if you want to soften the communication. Dear Sharon, Did your check clear the bank? I seem to have had some rotten luck when I write to Missouri. It's as if a black hole opens up and swallows my mail. That's why I don't like to send cash. At least with a check, I can tell if it was cashed or not. I ordered 4 xerox copies of death certs from the MO state offices in Jeff City, each at a cost of $1, in the middle of August. I have yet to hear from them. How long does it take to get a reply? Previously, I have ordered certified copies and recieved them quite rapidly...within three weeks time. Obviously, the cost was much more ($10-13). Has anyone gotten better response time on the death cert copies? Sharon
Hi...........When I have had a death record found by the State Archives, I generally receive the copy in about a week to ten days time. If you haven't heard from them since August, I sure would check w/them. They are usually 8-10 weeks behind in finding records, but once found, I have always received my copy shortly thereafter. This would be in connection with this site: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) Mary
