My grandfather was Richard Hayden FERGUSON born in Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky around 1867-68. On his marriage certificate (1905) from Montana it has his parents as Albert FERGUSON and Harriet MAINS. The story he told my father was that his father was killed in the line of duty as a revenue officer when Richard was a child. I was under the impression that he was killed in Kentucky but now believe he may have been killed in Missouri as a law officer not necessarily a revenue officer. My grandfather Richard was raised in Missouri and as a youngster went on several cattle drives to Montana. I can place him in the state of Montana as early as 1893 by the land patent papers. Several of his witnesses said that they knew him for fifteen to twenty years. He received his homestead papers in 1907 for one tract. On the 1900 census for Montana his parents are listed as having been born in Kentucky as he was. I have a family reunion photograph and have posted it on Ancientfaces.com under Ferguson. The photo was taken somewhere in Missouri and has the name of the photographer as A.? Graham and looks like Buckner, Mo. I believe it was taken sometime in 1928 or so. The way the chairs are set up it looks as though it was a large family reunion and photos may have been taken in family groups. He is sitting next to a blind woman that we believe was his sister. My grandfather was 20 years older than my grandmother at the time of his marriage and would have been in his late fifties in 1928. My father who was born in 1916 and was about 10 or 12 at the time remembers his father planning on going to the reunion from Washington state. I can place my grandfather in Montana until his death and have the place he was born but cannot seem to find any documents or information on him between birth and year he came to Montana. He died in Washington State in 1950. I have no idea where in Missouri the family may have settled and only can guess that if the photographer was from Buckner they may have lived somewhere near his studio unless photographers traveled around to reunions at that time. Any help or suggestions as to where to begin searching in Missouri would be greatly appreciated. Terrie
