    2. Kathy, I assume you are aware that there is a Polk County in very Southeastern corner of Tennessee. I have tvld through it on various occassions. Now I could be wrong on this part as my memory plays tricks on me. But I think a James K. Polk was the first governor of Tennessee. Stan Brookshier, Sr. Knoxville, Tennessee

Well, at the very least he was *from* Tennessee, and he was President of the US.<g> Yep, checking the Polk Co TN website, you see: Polk County, Tennessee's 72nd county, so named to honor newly-elected Governor James K. Polk, ...... However, Polk County, MO, doesn't have quite the same naming history: (from the Polk Co MO website) Polk County was formed from Greene County and was established on January 5, 1835. John Polk and Ezekiel Madison Campbell, earliest known settlers in the area, are credited with the naming of the county. They submitted the name, Polk, in memory of their grandfather Col. Ezekiel Polk who fought in George Washington's army. If I recall correctly, Ezekiel was kin to James K.
