    1. [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] JC McNair, TM Culver
    2. Max Evans
    3. Am seeking any information on either name (not my line) but for research into the peach industry in Oregon County at turn of century 1900. These were the two largest operators at Koshkonong Missouri once called the peach capital. I have not found them in Census records. Thanks.

    3. Max, did some looking for you. Neither surname is listed in the Howell County Cemetery Inscriptions, thru 1987. Neither man found in the Howell Co Birth Index of 1883-1893, which was a voluntary thing. Are you familiar with the 5 Volumes by Gerald and Charlotte Groves, Post Offices, Postmaster, and Their Communities. These extremely interesting books include excerpts from newspapers, court records, Civil War Records, a few marriages, etc. T M Culver was not included in any of the indexes. In Volume 3, Will McNair and wife Frances are mentioned. Also in Volume 3, is this comment relating to a Mr. Sessen in Feb 27 1893, concerning fruit tree planting. The GAZETTE newspaper quoted, "---My experience in the nursery business dates from childhood. I was raised in one of the nursery centers of Western New York. There we could not grow some varieties from root grafts as they would make too much carrot roots and would be considered as worthless to plant. I know again of men planting orchards who would place flat rocks under their trees to present them sending their root down, so they would bear earlier. I have shipped car loads of trees to New York, Kansas and different parts of the state. There was no question as to how they were grafted, but I have their testimonials. Five years ago I sold trees from my first planting to parties who planted their trees and cared for them and they are already reaping a harvest from them --- Mr. Sessen closed a contract in June of that year to deliver 40,500 fruit trees in the fall, ready to plant, to John G McNair. Mr. McNair, of St Louis, had purchased 520 acres near Koshkonong through Colonel P. P. Dobozy. This brought McNair's holdings there to 1800 acres which he was turning into orchard land. = = = = = == This appears to be the right man, but mistype on his middle initial. = = = = = == Olden community was getting another boost, according to a story in the GAZETTE July 7, 1893: D C Givens of Evansville, Ind. representing the firm of Givens & Nesbit, of that city, has purchased from Halstead & Co, 1,000 acres of land near Olden. Mr. Givens is here and will proceed at once to erect a fine house on the land and to plant it to fruits The firm proposes to have one of the best and most extensive fruit farm in the country, and are abundantly able to have almost anything they want as they are rated as being worth one and one-half million dollars. We are glad to see these large capitalists investing their means in this county. = = = = There are some other articles about the fruit farms and industry, but these all take place in Howell Co rather than Oregon County. = = = In the 1894 Goodspeed book, A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region, there is a bio for James Claiborn McNair. Quite interesting but it is two pages long. How about I have my daughter scan and send it to you that way.
