    3. Pat, Congrats on your find! Marvelous! Did Jabel Putnam have another given name that you know? I'm wondering if they were connected to ones in Lawrence Co., MO in 1870. Had noticed those not long ago when I was looking for something else there. Did you have a location prior to Oregon Co., MO? Beth P.S. Your relatives are in the general vicinity of where my Brashear(s) were much later. I recently found the location of the land that Jabel Putnam got in Oregon CO. It is W1/2NW-12-N-6W NO 5th PM; SWSW-17-22-N-6W NO 5th PM; SESE-18-22-N-6W NO 5th PM. I can find this by satelite, but I want to know where it actually is in the county. Satelite maps still confuse me. Little maps with squares on them are easier for me. I'll truely appreciate this as it is the first hint of where my family lived when they first migrated into Oregon County. The Homestead date is May 20, 1862. But, they aren't on a census there until 1880. If there is anyone available to do land research, I'd like that too. The Society has been helpful with other research, but I don't know if they do land history. I'd like to know when the land passed to the next owner and its history until at least the 1930s. Pat Miller Dallas,TX ------------------------------ Message: 2 Hi Pat, I think I can help you with the land location. First, the information you provided represents legal descriptions of three separate tracts of land that were homesteaded as one farm. There is a number missing in the description of the first of the three tracts, so I went back to the land records to get the missing number. I also noted that the section number was incorrect in your description of the first tract of land, so I'm going to list the correct description for each of the three tracts: 1) The West 1/2 of the Northwest 1/4 of Section 20 in Township 22 North of Range 6 West 2) The Southwest 1/4 of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 17 in Township 22 North of Range 6 West 3) The Southeast 1/4 of the Southeast 1/4 of Section 18 in Township 22 North of range 6 West I don't know a real good way to draw a picture in an email to describe the farm, but I'll give it a try. The farm was 160 acres in size. Think of the 160 acres as being made up of four square 40-acre plots of ground, each 1/4 mile by 1/4 mile in size. We'll represent each of these square 40-acre plots by an "x". The farm, then, was shaped like this: x x x x The northeast corner of the farm was located 2 1/4 miles south, and 1/4 mile west, of the center of Koshkonong. The southeast corner of the farm was located roughly 1/4 mile north and 1/4 mile west of Grand Gulf.

    3. Jabel Putnam was first in South Carolina, then in Obion and Weakly Co. in Tennessee, then I think I found them in Arkansas, then by 1870 they were in Dunklin Co., MO. The land records show that he registered for land in Oregon Co. in 1862 and he shows up there on the 1880 census. I think some of the sons stayed in Oregon Co. Oliver Hardy Shurron was raised by them. How interesting that you found Putnams in Lawence co., MO, because that is where my mother's family is and where my Dad was raised too. It seems that I found burial records for some in Marionville. Did you find a burial for a Jabel Putnam in Lawrence Co. or someone with a similar name? I'll have to dig out what I have and see if I can find whether he used another name, but I don't remember one. Thanks for the congrats. It's always nice to find something new; keeps us going.
