I belong to a couple of family associations and find it very worthwhile. The archives for the family are all housed in one place, and members can access them. They have a website; they publish a quarterly newsletter; they have an annual meeting; and they subsidize DNA testing for association members. As an association member, you also have a LARGE group of seasoned researchers to help you knock down those brick walls. I get all this for $20.00 a year. All that was required of me was to send a group sheet of my line along with my annual dues. The newsletters are wonderful, listing the lines of any new association members, obituaries for any of the surname who have died, and discussing any new research that has gone on, DNA studies, etc! All this stuff costs money, so I'm glad to pay my dues. As I said, I find it is well worth it.
