I'm back at square one on my John & Joe Moore. I had just re-located some very promising information I had received from Ann Jobe Brown regarding John F. Moore who died during the Civil War. Several things seemed to match and I was elated, but it was not to be. I found out that his son Joe could not be my g-grandfather who positively did die in Muskogee,Oklahoma, not Clay County, Arkansas. SO, now that I'm starting over, I also think I remember something about that the Oregon County probate packets not being accessible for awhile after Lanita had posted the lists of surnames. What do I need to do to get hold of probate packets? I have never seen one, so please pardon my ignorance! Do you have to read word for word through them to find out if specific people are mentioned, or is there an "index" or list on the packets? I may be able to go to Alton in the fall, but I'd love to get them sooner. I certainly would be happy to pay for copies, etc., if someone has access to them or already has copied the packets. 1. MOORE, John or parents or siblings - family says he was killed by raiders / bushwhackers / jayhawkers during the Civil War. (Not the John M. Moore with a son named Josephus on the 1860 Oak Grove Twp, Oregon County, MO census, but could be the John M. Moore in Moore Twp. Not the John F. Moore who was married to Sarah McCauley in Randolph County, Arkansas) 2. HAWS/HAWES/HAUS - no first names proven, except maybe Mary Lucinda, wife of Joe/Josephus Moore, mother of Myra May, Mora Mona and Ora Lucinda Moore, died 1896 Many Springs or Jobe, Missouri. 3. JOHNSON or JOHNSTON - with a daughter who married John Moore in #1. 4. MURRAY - if it mentions John Moore, Joe/Josephus Moore, Mary Lucinda Haws or Myra, Mora or Ora Moore. This would probably be Mary Murray Cypret or her parents. 5. CYPRET/CYPRETT - see #4. 5. TAYLOR, F.C. and wife Nancy, or any with relatives - see #4. Judy McGinnis
Hi List, If anyone has access to the Oregon Co marriage records I sure do need a look up. Minnie Copas to _______ Grisham or Grissom. Just need date and the name of groom. I have checked our Randolph County records and the marriage did not take place here. They lived at Elm Store near the Oregon Co line so I suspect this is where their license will be. Thanks for any help that can be offered. Betty Tucker http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~randolph/randolphcountyarkansaspagesofinterest.html --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Betty, In OREGON CO. Marrigae books for the years 1845-1890, there is only one GRISHAM Groom: Grisham, Samuel F. to Bradshaw, Mary S. on the 6th of Jul 1879, listed in book "2", page 82. No COPAS Brides for those years at all.. if they married in Oregon Co., had to be after 1890. Sorry, I don't have the listing after those years. Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
If you will direct your inquiry to the Oregon County Genealogical Society they will be happy to search the marriage books and the probate index and packets. The charge is minimal. I can't remember exactly. To write to OCGS, send to Oregon County Courthouse, Alton, MO 65606. They can also be reached by e-mailing a message to altonpubliclibrary@hotmail.com If that doesn't work, e-mail me. I have sometimes volunteered to do look ups for individuals, and don't mind when I can. However, I am an active member of OCGS and believe I shouldn't take away from their income. Betty, I saw Lanita's response that the Grisham/Grissom marriage didn't take place in Oregon County, so I checked Carter County for you. There is a marriage between Henry D. Gresham and Mary O.C. Leach on April 19, 1863; also A.G. Gresham to Minnie Clayton on April 23, 1899. Neither is an obvious match, but could be right if Minnie was a nickname or if she had been married before. Good luck. Judy, The probate packets are accessible for those who go to the closet and dig for them. I can tell you the number of the probate packet that you will need to look for.... each packet is for that particular individual's estate. You will need to go to Random Acts of Kindness site, for a lookup. I know that there is one local person who has volunteered to head for the courthouse for those who are in need of it. Do you need that url? Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
